SURRY, Maine — State police say a Deer Isle man was killed Tuesday night when the dirt bike he was operating without lights collided with a car on Toddy Pond Road.

Troopers said Derrick Robbins, 19, was killed instantly when his bike swerved into the path of a car about 7:30 p.m.

The car was operated by Mark Clapp, 26, of Surry, who suffered minor injuries.

The collision took place at the crest of a hill. Troopers said it appears Robbins had ridden the dirt bike about 20 miles from his home.

The Hancock County Sheriff’s Department and Ellsworth Police Department assisted with the crash investigation.

  1. The headline says he died “after” the collision. But the story says he died “instantly.” So, which is it—dead on impact, or dead later?

      1. It is some times difficult with BDN because they get their stories wrong so often.  I assumed it was a motorized bike and not a regular mountain bike…but I wondered the same thing.

  2. Heard this on the scanner last night.  Really was hoping that this wasn’t going to be the outcome.  RIP young man.

  5. Oh, he was just a kid—-my heart goes out to his family and friends, and also to Mark Clapp. The whole thing is so sad.

  6. Very sorry to hear of this young man’s passing. I am from Surry and know some of his family, this is a really tragic loss. Also sad for the driver who likely will never be the same.
