BREWER, Maine — A Dexter man was arrested shortly after noon Wednesday after police say he switched the price tags on an item at a department store.

Jeb Melvin, 32, is accused of switching price tags on camera equipment at Marden’s, according to Brewer police Sgt. Arden Jones.

Security called police after Melvin was caught on video surveillance at Marden’s. Cpl. Paul Gauvin issued Melvin a summons for the theft charge and arrested him on two outstanding warrants for unpaid fines.

Melvin was taken to the Penobscot County Jail and later released on bail, Jones said.

    1. Wait, some cry that they are getting free food and board when jailed, others that they aren’t tossed away for years.   I guess you would have him serve years for this crime?

      1.  The winger response would be to have him serve years, but don’t feed him and keep him shackled to avoid having to guard him.

    2. court system doesnt make money until the violate the bail conditions, HENCE the court system pretty much knows they will be back so the bail them !

  1. Buying camera equipment at Marden’s…..really?? Smoke & water damaged merchandise…..Must be an amateur photographer……Crazy….

  2. At least this thief was only trying to slim down the price instead of just taking the stuff and walking out. Still not justified though.

  3. BDN is sure hard up for news, or journalist, no work ethic there what so ever. Sad to see ‘Our” newspaper going down the tube.

    1. Considering the ties Mardens and Paul LePage once shared and the Mural battle has no new news yet, need something to pass the time while you are waiting for any news associated to him directly.

    2. Can you imagine a story like this printed in the newspaper where something is really happening? Wow, this is earth shattering news.

  4. Note to Jeb. Jeb if you have outstanding warrants, try not to bring attention to yourself!

  5. Hmmmm… I’m sure he wanted to buy the equipment at a “Real Wholesale Discount”, to be resold later…

  6. This is news worthy, just what I always wanted  to read this henious crime should not go un punished death to the meanie theif

  7. “Shoulda bought it when I saw it at Marden’s” ….the original sticker price that is… ; )

  8. well Jeb I guess it’s true what John Wayne said “life’s hard it’s even harder when you’re stupied”

  9. I find the increased prices at Marfen’s not worth going there anymore, no excuse  to steal but stuff is new at other stores around and same price.  Some of the help there look like druggies also.

  10. I think I’ll stop by and see what camera stuff they have that would be worth stealing.  Maybe they got a large camera store liquidation. I bought a Rebel digital camera there several years ago. It is still going strong.

  11. The sad part is, this guy will do a year in jail while the guy in the other story today, uses his baby as shield against the cop and kicks him in the groin, gets 90 days.

  12. Mardens has video surveilance?  Did Lepage pay for this?  Or did the taxpayer’s money pay for it?  Wal-Mart wouldnt have even wasted the police force’s time with something like this.  Give me a break….this is NOT NEWS

  13. Another store that has them new fangdangled video surveillance movie projecter things ! DOH !

  14. The Melvin boys in Dexter keep our police force employed, lol. He isn’t the only one in trouble from there. They get their hands slapped and there you have it, repeat offenders.

  15. No big deal…he was only stealing. What do you think people will do with the examples they are given by politicians ?? Wait til the next generation grows up. They have been taught that stealing pays off by our greedy politicians that do it every day and NEVER get called on it.

    1. Everyone has to remember, if you’re going to steal, make sure it’s over 1 billion dollars. you’ll most likely never get caught. And if you do get caught, you’ll most likely never get prosecuted.

Just make sure you grease the politicians before you take billions from the people.

  16. Seriously?? this news is just as bad as the Whitney Houston news! C’mon…people shoplift everyday at Mardens. You don’t see there names in the BDN everyday! Get a life Dexter!

  17. Theres things (can be made into stories) that happen locally here that are way more news-worthy than this why not try and get these stories verses this piddly crud? just sayin
