BANGOR, Maine — A father and son from Caribou pleaded not guilty Friday in U.S. District Court to drug charges.

Charles Bernard, 68, and Shawn Bernard, 29, were indicted last month by the federal grand jury on one count each of the importation of controlled substances.

Each was released on unsecured $10,000 bail with one of the conditions being that he not leave the state.

The Bernards allegedly brought oxycodone into Maine from Canada on Aug. 31.

Their arraignments, originally scheduled to be held Wednesday, were delayed until Friday after Shawn Bernard had a “medical emergency,” according to court documents.

The father and son were late arriving at federal court in Bangor because they went to Canada on Friday morning. On the way back, they were referred for a secondary inspection at the Limestone border, which delayed them, Assistant U.S. Attorney Joel Casey told U.S. Magistrate Judge Margaret Kravchuk.

Both men told the judge they would not return to Canada.

If convicted, each man faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $1 million.

    1. Sounds like the family the mom brought her son some pot when he was in jail, got caught passing it to him, and the father at the same visit got busted with pot as well.

Talk about family values, mom, dad, and son in the same jail.  This was in BDN the other week.

  1. Bail condition: not to leave state…………hmmm, not only did they leave the state, they left the country and have promised not to return to Canada.

  2. Each was released on unsecured $10,000 bail with one of the conditions being that he not leave the state….HAHAHAHAHA…EH!

  4. This has been going on for a long time but nothing done by our local police. Their to busy being traffic cops and harassing people with legitimate jobs while ths was going on right under their noses! Shame on you Charlie for condoning this activity under your roof.

  5. Two more to support and give free health and dental care!  What a system, only in America, land run by idiots!!!

  6. Meanwhile, in Allagash, a father/son team is making furniture and a well deserved good reputation.   Which one has the better parental skill….?

  7. Now all they have to do is pick up his other son (who lives in Canada) when he crosses the boarder on the warrant that’s out for him and they can have one big family outing in the court system!!

  8. These two are going to flee as fast as they can if there is a relative in Canada (a son).  They might want to get a ride and not take their own vehicle.  Seriously, almost 70 years old and running drugs?  Man, what a loser.

  9. Given the charges against this obvious smart bunch(notice the sarcasim) guess we all know why the son had a medical emergency. Is it a wonder why people get discouraged with the justice system. I know if it were me or most other people if we showed up late to a fedral court date not to mention drug charges cause we had to go Canada for this obvious medical emergency we would never see the  light of day!!!!!!!!!!! Plllllllllleeeeeeeeeezzzzzzz! For once it would be nice and a welcomed change to see justice get served for people who deserve what they get.
