PUL-E-ALAM, Afghanistan — Military investigators have concluded that five U.S. service members were involved in the incineration of a pile of Qurans in Afghanistan last week, according to U.S. military officials who have been briefed on the inquiry.
The burning of the Muslim holy books — which U.S. officials say was accidental — incited a week of protests that left 30 Afghans dead. The burnings also were cited as motivation for at least some of the six fatal attacks on U.S. military personnel that have occurred in Afghanistan in the past eight days.
Investigators appointed by Marine Gen. John R. Allen, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, found that the service members removed the Qurans from a prison at Bagram air base after they were discovered to contain extremist messages.
The books were then placed in an office for safekeeping, according to the inquiry. But they were mistaken for garbage and taken to a landfill on the base.
Afghan employees identified the books as Qurans just as the pages caught fire, a major desecration according to Muslim teachings. The discovery led to a week of unprecedented tension between U. S. and Afghan military officials.
U.S. military officials said that although the five service members will be reprimanded, it is unlikely that their names will be released or that their punishment will approach the severity of what some Afghans are demanding, including trial in an Islamic court.
“For the soldiers, it will be serious — they could lose rank. But you’re not going to see the kind of public trial that some here seem to want,” said one U.S. military official.
Another military official said: “What they did was careless, but there was no ill will.”
The much-discussed investigation was intended to quell unrest and prove to the Afghan public that U.S. officials were both apologetic and willing to make amends for wrongdoing.
But U.S. military officials expressed concern that the investigation’s finding — which stops short of pinning blame on malevolent service members — might not satisfy Afghan leaders who have have publicly demanded harsh retribution.
Senior Afghan clerics, in a statement issued after a meeting with President Hamid Karzai, said: “This evil action cannot be forgiven by apologizing. The perpetrators of the mentioned crime should be put on a public trial as soon as possible.”
The clerics reiterated calls for the U.S.-led NATO coalition to relinquish control of military prisons to the Afghan government. “This incident was caused due to the illegal management of the prison,” the clerics said, according to a translation of their statement provided by the U.S. military. The clerics said they strongly urged “the suspension of all prisons and the transfer of all prisoners to the Afghan government so that in the future similar incidents do not happen.”
NATO spokesman Lt. Col. Jimmie Cummings declined to comment on the findings of the military inquiry, saying it was “still going through the legal process.” A separate Afghan investigation, which is being conducted by lawmakers and religious officials, is expected to conclude in several days. U.S. military officials worry that if the Afghan investigation clashes with their own findings, it could reinvigorate demonstrators whose anger has appeared to fade this week.
“There’s a real concern there. We don’t know what the investigation will say or how the public will react,” one official said. “But we know that there’s a real interest in trying guilty parties in an Afghan court, and that’s not something we’re prepared to do.”
Gavin Sundwall, a spokesman for the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, said American officials “certainly hope” that the release of Afghan report will not lead to more violence. A third investigative panel that includes both U.S. and Afghan officials also is expected to issue its findings soon.
“We appreciated President Karzai’s repeated calls for dialogue and calm earlier and hope that people took them to heart,” Sundwall said. “We believe that we will get through this unfortunate period, that a decade’s worth of relationships don’t go away in a single week.”
When Afghan employees discovered the partially charred Qurans at Bagram, they launched a protest outside Kabul that was followed by dozens more across the country.
Afghan security forces and a civilian have killed six American service members in three separate incidents since the Quran burnings became known, including two who were shot in the back of the head while working at their desks inside the fortified Interior Ministry. In response to that attack, Allen ordered Western advisers to temporarily evacuate Afghan ministries.
Many of those advisers still have not returned to work. They are permitted to attend “mission essential” meetings with their Afghan counterparts, but only if they are escorted by an armed guard and wearing body armor.
“The incident in Kandahar set us back a few notches,” said one Western adviser, speaking of an incident Thursday in which two NATO troops were killed on a military base in southern Afghanistan by an Afghan soldier and an Afghan civilian.
U.S. officials said better oversight could have prevented the Quran burning. Coalition soldiers across Afghanistan are now receiving training on how to properly handle religious materials — a lesson ordered by Allen. Much of the instruction has focused on the meaning and importance of the Quran in Muslim culture.

The Qurans (Muslim holy books) in question were taken from a prison library after the discovery that the detainees were writing extremist messages and exchanging these messages to each other in the bibles…..according to their faith, writing in a Quran is strictly forbidden…..then American soldiers mistakenly put them out to burn with garbage, and the Muslims react with protests and killings for a week for desecration of said books…..now the talk is that these 5 American soldiers should be reprimanded…..this should happen right after the Afghans discipline their own for writing in said books to begin with……
We could prevent this in the future by not taking any prisoners, not allowing books into prisons and by placing the blame on those who actually were in charge. By those in charge I mean our commander in chief and his top advisors.
Put them on public trial here in their country. Case dismissed!
Maybe Obozo can apologize (again) and make Afghanistan the 58th state?
SHAME, SHAME, SHAME!!!!! If an item is desecrated, like the bible or the flag, you burn it, The Quran is not to be written in or it is considered desecrated and for that reason I too would have taken the items and burned them. Might I remind you it was the PRISONERS who wrote in and there for desecrated this book. And did this article tell you that there was a total of 4 books found? Yes four! And for that this solders are dieing and this president is doing nothing about it! SHAME, SHAME, SHAME! I do have one question, Once the Quran is all tore up or falls apart, how do you get rid of it, hold it up in the air and let Allah pull it up to heaven? Just asking?
Behead the infidels!
This whole situation is a mess.
are you kidding me ? soldiers will be punished… ? If I were to guess I would say that if you were a young man or woman the last thing you should ever do is enlist… our military leaders are spinless and driven 100% by political pressures… this was a mistake according to all reports.. end of story.. these folks who are killing each other over this have some serious issues.. but it’s not up to the USA to step in and try to placate them with US soldier discipline… you gotta attempt that the muslim world is extemely violent and completely nuts
Time to bring the troops home and let them kill each other.
yup….leave plenty of guns behind when we leave so they will have something besides rocks for weapons.that would hasten their extinction
“U.S. military officials said that the five service members will be reprimanded”………WTF ?
They are killing our soldiers and others over an inanimate object. The culture is at odds with civilization, decency and humanity.
Funny isn’t it that the buring of a Holy Bible by the military is viewed as not being a big deal but the burning of the Quran is so very different. Time to stop spending billions on these fools, get our troops back to the USA. Time to push back on these idiots…..
These soldiers should not be punished if it was truly found that is was an accident. They just haven’t learned to turn the other cheek!!! In the middle east where Muslims rule their own country’s people they have a very dim view about any other religion. We know this for a fact. Why the hell we still get involve is a mystery to me. Let them shoot and bomb their way back to the stone age. The clerics of these countries are just hypocrites and will not seek any kind of world peace until they have everybody under their thumb. They are the most fanatical of the fanatics. I dare anyone to tell me that if you live in that country you are not.
When the immigrants from these countries come here, they are accorded the same freedoms we have. But lately I have to question the motive of some of them. They bring some of their old fashion ways here and some are good. But when it infringes on the personal freedom of their own in this country I will take a stance.
One big issue is women’s rights. Women are equal in this country. If you don’t like it go back to your own country. That is the way it will always be here. There are no if, and, or buts.
If you can’t understand that this Koran burning was an accident then you are stupid. The religions in this country understand that. But like I said they believe differently over there.
I say cut our loses and cut the funding of any country that doesn’t care about the human rights. Hell we may even balance the budget. Our system here, in the USA, has worked for a long time now and if we remember that we will survive.
The soldiers did nothing wrong. There is no reason to reprimand them. There is no reason to try them anywhere. The Afghans have only perceived that something wrong was done. It is the Afghans who are murdering people. It is the Afghans wo should be put on trial.
I just don’t understand why they were destroying books in the first place. Especially in a country as impoverished as Afghanistan. I am sure there were hundreds of people in the area who would have loved to have had the opportunity to acquire some free books, especially the Quran. (well, maybe not the women people, but others)
While the violence this allegedly unintended act is indefensible, it is the American culture of waste that was at the root of this incident. Why don’t we ever learn?
4 books? Are you kidding me? Lose rank? Be brought to justice in a foreign country for something as petty and innocent as this? I think it’s ironic that senior Afghan clerics want a trial as soon as possible!!! It seems they have no problem giving punishment with Americans, no matter what country it is, but when it comes to taking down their own people who are the main cause of their own problems they look for compassion and excuses. Oh and let us not forget they blame Americans!! Next they’ll be wanting a million dollars for each book!! How about the United States asking these countries to pay monies for the innocent killings of the six soldiers. Maybe all the monies we’ve given to them we can get back. And quite frankly, I’m sick of hearing how the United States is always apologizing for these kinds of petty acts. And yes they are petty!! It was a simple innocent act. Karzai, get out from behind your luxurious lifestyle that you and your clerics are living, put your own people in check first, spend your billions of dollars to take care of your country and I’m sure our soldiers will gladly come home and not want to return. Oh, and one more thing. It’s freaking ironic how foreigners can burn the American flag and not once have I heard of an APOLOGY for doing so!!! Nor asking for a SPEEDY TRIAL!!!
Obama=FAIL
The Apologizer in Chief is a weakling. These Korans were being used to pass information among prisoners. The prisoners were writing in them. Muslims were defiling their own holy book. What a tool this President is.
Did Obama ask for an apology for the troops who were shot
down right after? This guy in the WH owes this country an
apology for HIS behavior.
We don’t fight wars anymore, we play chess, and OUR soldiers are the pawns…they are seen as expendable by both sides.
My father never talked much about World War II, but when he did I got the distinct feeling that the greatest generation wasn’t very P.C. They took on the two strongest powers on the planet (and their allies) and beat the tar out of them in four years. We’re headed into 11 years of Afghanistan war, and there is no end in sight.
My message to my employees in the White House and Congress; “Finish this up fast, or get the hell out! Stop kissing third-world butt!
