BREWER, Maine — A 16-year-old girl from Bangor who has a criminal history was arrested early Sunday after taking a cab and attempting to skip out on paying the fare, Brewer police Capt. Jason Moffitt said Tuesday.
The teenager was picked up in Corinth and was dropped off at a Wilson Street hotel just before 4 a.m., the police captain said. She owed the cabdriver $40 for the fare.
“The female said she had to go into the room and get the money” but never returned, Moffitt said.
The girl, who was not identified because she is a juvenile, was arrested at the request of her probation officer, the police captain said. She was charged with theft of services. (Nok-Noi Ricker, BDN)
It’s about time that this juvenile miscreants had to see their names in the paper — not that it would make a bit of difference in their demeanor! *sigh*

I know that cab drivers dont card their riders. I know that its hard to tell how old someone really is. 16 might as well be 18 and an 18 year old may as well be 20 years old.
However did it ever cross the cab drivers mind that picking up a young girl in a rural area and driving her to a hotel in Brewer around 4 in the morning might be a bit out of the norm? Obviously the cabbie cant assume that every fare is going to rob him but at times its prudent to do the ¨sniff test¨.
If she’s getting dropped off at a Brewer hotel at 4AM, she probably is stinky enough for the smell test!
Maybe the cabbie had a bunch of airfreshners hanging off the rearview mirror.
When he gets the call from dispatch, it is his job to go and pick up a customer. I have a friend that owns a cab company and NOTHING is out of the norm for them. After a year on the job, these drivers have about seen it all.
Parents need to be held responsible here. Do you know where your 16 year old is? I’ve raised a couple plus foster. I knew where those I was responsible were, even when they spent the night at other responsible homes. I knew the parents very, very well where my children have spent a night. I can count on one hand where my girls spent the night. My foster children never spent the night out of my home because I was responsible. Also, one earns freedom. Teens need a tight rope, and parents need to parent.
Its too bad that there aren’t more parents of your caliber. That’s how I grew up. For a while I thought my mother had a crystal ball,she always knew where I was and who I was with.I’m glad I was taught right from wrong at a early age.

Exactly! When I need a cab from Banor to Winterport, it costs me almost $50.00. I want the name of the cab company.
Whenever I see a story like this, I would love to see a comment about the response from the parents. Was she in foster care? Did her parents think she was somewhere else? Did she sneak out? If they knew or didn’t care where she was, then DHHS should be involved.
This is the girl President Obama should be calling and trying to help, not the woman who Rush Limbaugh went after.

Yeah. I sympathize. this kind of behavior is always a surprise. I’m a believer that all children are good children. I also believe all children (and adults) are capable of making HUGE mistakes.
The big difference between the ones who were “raised with love and kindness” have a place to go where they can process and learn from these mistakes. Too many children today don’t have that option.
How is the fare only 40 bucks? It costs about 25 to go across town from the airport !
The alternative at that hour is probably $0 so $40 probably sounded pretty good. I bet the rate would be different at 4 PM.

Um, have you ever been carded by a cab driver? Yeah, me neither. That is because they don’t ask your age when you get into their car. A 16 year old can very much look like an adult.
