University of Maine senior left wing and assistant captain Spencer Abbott has been chosen the Hockey East Player of the Year by the 12-member editorial staff at College Hockey Weekly.

Abbott leads the country in scoring with 56 points and in points per game (1.65), and is tied for first in assists (37) and assists per game (1.09).

Abbott was also selected to the publication’s Hockey East first team along with linemate and junior right wing Joey Diamond, who is third in the country in goals per game (0.71) and tied for fifth in total goals with 22.

The third member of the line, senior center Brian Flynn, wasn’t chosen to the first or second team.

Joining Abbott and Diamond on the first team were Boston College forward Chris Kreider, defenseman Brian Dumoulin of Biddeford and goalie Parker Milner and Boston University defenseman Garrett Noonan.

The second team was comprised of Boston University defenseman Adam Clendening and forward Chris Connolly; UMass Lowell goalie Doug Carr and forward Scott Wilson, Boston College forward Barry Almeida and UMass defenseman Joel Hanley.

UMass Lowell first-year head coach Norm Bazin was the publication’s league coach of the year.
