UPDATE 3 p.m.: Daniel Porter was not granted bail at Thursday afternoon’s court hearing. Check back for a full story.

BEFLAST, Maine — The accused killer of  Florida firefighter Jerry Perdomo will appear in court in Belfast this afternoon for a bail hearing.

Daniel Porter, 24, is accused of killing Perdomo, 31, of Orange City, Fla., whose body was later found in the woods with a gunshot wound to the head.

Porter’s family and friends showed in full force, occupying at least four rows of the Waldo County Superior Court gallery behind him.

Perdomo’s wife, Tonya Lynn Perdomo was also in court this afternoon, according to web reports.

Last week in court, Porter’s attorney claimed his client acted in self-defense.

His attorney, Jeffrey Silverstein, said detectives could release more information about the case in today’s hearing. He said that the facts have yet to be made public.

In documents released last week, Maine state police learned Perdomo traveled to the state frequently and at least one person said both men were engaged in “drug activity.”

Perdomo’s body was found on rural property owned by one of Porter’s relatives.

He fled the state after video surveillance showed Porter driving Perdomo’s rental car and discarding the man’s personal belongings in a trash dump.

Perdomo’s family told the Seminole County fire department that funeral services will be limited to close friends and family, according to spokeswoman Paula Thompson.

The department does not have plans for a separate ceremony, she said.

    1. The percentage of crime, particularly violent crime, is much higher in states with a working (active) death penalty.

  1. I don’t see how he can claim self defense.  He hid the body, disposed of the car, disposed of the mans belongings, cleaned up after the crime, and fled the state.  That is not self defense.  That is murder!!

    1. All that happened after the killing. Whether it was self defense is a matter of what happened before the killing.

      1. I disagree.  If it was self defense he should have notified the police.  He tried to cover it up and got caught.

        1. You may disagree, and find a bunch of ditto supporters, BUT funny thing about US laws; there are NO absolutes.  No clear lines which make someone guilty before the fact.  So you (like me) may have a belief, but that is far from a conviction.

Frankly I also believe when one drug dealer shoots another (even “suspected” drug dealers, “nice people” should just hold their coats.  Criminals killing each other should not be a concern which takes much of our time.

          1. I 100% agree with you.  Criminals killing other criminals should not have much of our time.  In a perfect world they would have just taken eachother out

          2. HHSIII I agree that there are no absolutes in US laws. However, concealment of a crime can and will be used to dispute the claim of self defense. If I recall correctly, his attorney stated on the news last week that Porter had a gun pointed at his head and that is why he shot him. If that was the case, why the concealment, etc…

And I disagree that “Criminals killing each other should not be a concern”. It certainly should be a concern. Once a person kills another person it becomes that much easier to kill again.

          3. Actually you happen to be incorrect.  Except for a miniscule number of sociopaths, and killers for hire, it is beyond rare to find a person who “kills again.”

and you are going down a path of logic in your “self defense” reasoning. the law is seldom logical.  There are any number of defenses including (but not limited to) temporary insanity, the false confession defense, and  the possibility that the defense has e-mails, letters, or witness testimony showing that Perdomo leveled a significant threat and that Porter was in fear of death.

ALSO If I had a house full of drugs, or records of sakes, I wouldn’t want the police investigating a murder on those premises. That’s the “hiding the OTHER crime defense.

  2. Someone close to this kid tell him to take a deal. He shot him in the head that’s not self defense it’s an execution. Don’t try n fight this n end up like zack Carr. If anyone cares for this kid talk some sense into him n plea out. My best wishes go to the deceased family.

    1. Someone close to this ADULT should have helped him to contact the police when he called them to tell them that he’d just killed a man.  Someone helped him clean this up — wonder which bench they was sitting in today.

  3. I don’t see how one could claim self defense while both individuals were engaging in felonious conduct and one actor shoots and kills the of actor of this conduct.

  4. NOTIFICATION: Let this mark the beginning of the FREE DANNY PORTER! movement.  Anyone have a list of Dennis Dechaine supporters?  Those guys will certainly jump on board.

    1. Regardless to the fact that he was involved in drugs — he was a firefighter he took the training and passed the course — it is what he did for work.  No one can take that away from him.  He was also a drug dealer or so it seems.  Porter was what — unemployed and a drug dealer…Both the same in the end — Perdomo will probably continue to be referred to as a firefighter because that was what he was.

      1. Perdomo will continue to be referred to as a firefighter because it sensationalizes the story

  5. When is the BDN going to stop allowing posters to ridicule the family members of Porter?  I keep seeing comments removed at any mention of Perdomo’s family (including his wife – who appears to have been involved according to FL reports) yet they allow the immature comments directed at Porter’s family to remain.

    1. It’s nice to finally hear someone say that. A few of my comments have been removed because I stood up for my friend. You people can think whatever you want and that’s fine. Noone cares the only reason people post on here defending Dan is because you people  can’t seem to leave it alone. It has nothing to do with you and I think you need to leave it alone. Dan cannot read these comments only his friends and family can. I honestly hate talking to and arguing with people about what happened but you cannot seem to drop it. This situation has no effect on your lives so stop trying to act as though it does.

      1.  you do not own the BDN and we have the right of free speech !we can not help your friend is a murder if you don’t like what we right don’t look!

        1. It’s as simple as this you are more than entitled to freedom of speech we all are… To bad respect is something way out of your mind frame.

          1. I have said nothing about the families & it would be deleted if I did. I will only say that I am not impressed with anybody I have heard or read about.

  6. By reading the story BOTH men were wrong for fighting over drugs etc!! But they had both  wrote statements about threatning to harm each other months before! I think the police should have told them they were’nt allowed near each other!! So after his life was threatened he still drove to maine for his money that was owed!! It’s sad for everyone, but I’m sure his wife new he was dealing drugs!! I think the fire fighter part was a cover up, so he didn’t get pulled over with all his drugs!! This doesn’t give the other guy a right to do what he did, but when he went and told police that his family and friends were threatened they didn’t protect him! A lady ( fire fighters girlfriend) did say that the fire fighter came to maine to visit her and had a gun and was going to collect money!! I don’t know how this will play out but atleast he didn’t go to florida and kill the guy! i feel bad for both familes, but I don’t think either one are that innocent!!

    1. Only if Porter was so scared and these threats were real would he had invited him and had his girlfriend meet up with him and bring him to his house?  Its not like he was having other people over he was in the house with just Perdomo — is this behavior of someone who has been threatened by someone?  Sounds like behavior of someone who is setting someone up to be ambused and killed.

  7. By reading the story BOTH men were wrong for fighting over drugs etc!! But they had both seen wrote statements about threatning to harm each other months before! I think the police should have told them they were’nt allowed near each other!! so after

  8. Please BDN, start referring to the victim as a drug dealers.  He was the one bringing the drugs into the state.  If he had lived and gotten caught he would have had is name all over the news as a drug dealer. Call it like it is.  A drug deal gone bad!  Referring to him as a fire fighter seems to imply that he was a hero, when in fact he was a drug runner!  The profession he was in has nothing to do with the fact that he ran drugs so p-l-e-a-s-e stop referring to him as such.  He was actually a disgrace to the fine men and women who work hard fighting fire or any others legitimate job.   Your title should have read ” Man Accused of Murdering Florida Drug Runner Won’t get Bail.”

    1.  They can’t do that because in America you are innocent until proven guilty. And he hasn’t been accused by the police nor was he ever brought up on charges before his death. Calling him a drug dealer is slander and if it later comes out in trial that he had nothing to do with drugs the BDN would be sued. Remember we are going on information from a man accused of murder, so his information to the case could be false.

  9. You have to feel bad for this guy’s wife.  Reports have been that he was involved in drugs, and had a mistress.  It doesn’t seem like she was aware of any of it, and it must be terrible to have to deal with all of this on top of his death.  If there was a true victim, it would seem like it would be her.

    1. I doubt she wasn’t aware- increased income, a husband that was traveling to Maine in a rented car once a month- those 2 things alone should have made her suspicious. It may be that she did not WANT to see. I do feel sorry for her tho’.

    2. seriously she looks high. They both have poor reputaions where they are from for drug related issues. Your husbands pills don’t just go missing. And you don’t have to help someone across the country move every month.

  10. been watchin like everyone eles porter shud have called the police right after it happend instead of trying to hide it if it was self defense none of you know how you would really react if it was you we all try to beleave we would call the police if we just shot someone  dont really want to find out either but if he does get off on the self defense  i just hope he can live with himself knowing he took a life of another human bein drug dealer or not
