SAN ANTONIO, Fla., and CALAIS – James “Jim” R. Gibson Sr. passed away suddenly March 3, 2012, at Pasco Regional Medical Center at a very youthful 66. Jim was born June 23, 1945, in Portland, to William G. and Viola B. (Russell) Gibson.

Jim worked as a pipefitter for Georgia Pacific for 40 years. He was a member of the Quarter Century Club. Jim had a passion for basketball and with a vision for the future, started the Peewee basketball program in Calais, along with Mike Obrien, in the early 1970s. Jim loved teaching the fundamentals of basketball to all those who participated. Jim was a member of Calais Recreation Committee and was instrumental in securing the old grade school gym and turning it into what was to be and remains Calais Recreation Center. Jim volunteered two nights a week so that the recreation center would be open for all to use. Jim loved to compete, whether it was a fun round of golf, dart tournament or a weekly poker game. Jim served on the board of directors at St. Croix Country Club. Jim’s later passion was his music. He got his first guitar the Christmas of 1983 and never set it down after that. He loved to play and entertain. In 1990 Jim met the love of his life, Debby Gibson, lovingly referred to as “Pokey.” Together they set out on a journey that most people could only hope to have. They enjoyed many summers at the lake, basking in the sun and strumming the guitars and singing together, always hoping that some friends would stop by so they could play the latest song they had learned for them. After retirement he fulfilled another lifetime dream when they purchased a house at Tampa Bay Golf and Country Club. Jim and Pokey have enjoyed five years at Tampa Bay Golf and Country Club, meeting some of the nicest people you could ever imagine. Jim and Pokey entertained at the weekly karaoke nights and participated in all the talent shows that they could make it to. Yes they were great together and you could see it in their smiles.

Jim was predeceased by his parents. He is survived and will be greatly missed by his loving wife, Pokey; his only son, J.R. Gibson; grandchildren, Matthew Gibson and Erin Guptill; and great-grandchildren, Aiden Gibson, Madisyn Guptill, Ehtan Guptill and Kaliyah Gibson. Jim is also survived by brothers, Billy and Phillip Gibson; stepchildren, Bobby, Cathy and Julie; and stepgrandchild, Ben, all of Canada.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. March 31 at Tampa Bay Golf and Country Club Community Center. A remembrance of Jim’s life will be held 2 p.m. May 27 at St. Croix Country Club, Calais.
