AUGUSTA, Maine — With casino gambling expanding in Maine, a new group’s being formed to promote responsible gambling and generate awareness about the dangers of problem gambling.
A combination of private, state and non-profit groups, led by Maine’s Office of Substance Abuse and the Bureau of Alcoholic Beverages and Lottery Operations, is involved in the effort.
Besides promoting responsible gaming, the group is encouraging people who may have a gambling addiction to seek treatment.
Hollywood Casino in Bangor, which has just expanded operations to include table games, is participating. Another casino, in Oxford, is to open this summer.

Responsible Gambling is to gambling as ‘one more for the road’ is to sobriety. What they are actually doing is mitigating the effects of ‘irresponsible’ behaviour. Being ‘wiped out at the casino’ is a slower fall than being ‘wiped out on the highway’ but no less deadly.
Responsible gambling Is a neighborhood penny poker game!
Irresponsible gambling is High Stakes Casinos!
Guess we won’t see you at Hollywood Casino or the Oxford Casino anytime soon playing Roulette, Blackjack, Let it Ride, Texas Hold em. That’s unfortunate because Casinos aren’t the problems that Liberals like Dennis Bailey and his supporters claim it is. It’s not destoying anyone , it has helped Bangor and all of Maine. Maybe you should just take a visit to Hollywood Casino to see how professional it is and the 1st class type of establishment that Penn National runs here in Maine. Because it will be here for a very very long time with more on its way very very soon, with other types of gambling to boot :) .
Gambling = entertainment for those that can afford it and “investing” for those that can’t do math.
What those who are opposed to gambling needs to know is that problem gambling only makes up 1 to 3 % of folks. With a very few that are really addicted to it and the problems in life caused from addiction. But the problem is those who are opposed to it want to ruin it for the majority who play responsibly and want to stay here and do it which helps the local economy not having the money and jobs going to out of state to Casinos. If Gambling is bad why is the Lottery expanding this week with the Multi-State lottery game Lucky For Life, why is the Legislature debating a bill today at legalizing a limited amount of Slot Machines and Video Gambling Machines for Legion Halls and other clubs during bingo days. They are also looking at legalizing more Casinos, Online Gambling, and other Gambling forms. Trust me the state isn’t against Gambling they just want to have their share of the take from each gambling establishment.
Gambling is a problem.
No those on Welfare are a problem. Gambling is entertainment to most of us. We don’t take it seriously like most who are opposed to it want people to believe. We go to Casinos to have fun, for the shows at the Casinos, shopping at local businesses , stay at local hotels and eat at local resturants. It is about contributing to the economy. We don’t take it seriously its about the entertainment. The Anti-Casino crowd needs to either get a new hobby or go to Massachusetts and start bothering those folks.
Entertainment, now that is a laugh. I think you have it backwards, I think the Liberals need to go back to Massachusetts.
I am not a Liberal far from it way far from it a huge LePage supporter. Most of us consider Casinos as a form of entertainment. We don’t take it seriously we take Gambling as recreation. We see Gambling also as a choice like everything else if you don’t like it don’t go noone’s forcing you to go to these Casinos and Gambling halls. We the Maine people we can spend our money the way we please it’s ours not the Liberals Money , Not Dennis Bailey’s money and definitely not the Welfare Bums money. Casinos and Gambling is here to stay , the state government is not against it trust me. As I stated above they are already having hearings today on a bill to put in a limited amount of slot machines and video gambling machines in Legion Halls and other halls that have Bingo. They are also in the process of putting in rules to expand the number of Casinos/Horsetrack Casinos , Online Gambling , Other Gambling types. If they were against Gambling they wouldn’t as I stated in the post above they would have not expanded the Lottery which they did with the Multi-State Lucky for Life Lottery game that went on sale yesterday.
I understand and appreciate your comments. I just happen to disagree with Casino’s and Gambling. I realize the State of Maine is not against it for the most part. Why would they or Bangor or Penobscot Country refuse easy money. I do appologize for the Liberal comment, for the most part Maine is becoming more Liberal all the time which is unfortunate, and I think gambling heads it that way more so. Have a great day.
