SMITHFIELD, Maine — A local man was arrested on Monday evening for allegedly trying to burn his neighbor’s barn, said Sgt. Ken Grimes of the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Patrick Rines, 38, of Smithfield was arrested by state fire marshals on Monday and taken to Somerset County Jail in Madison. He was charged with attempted arson.

On Sunday evening, Village Road resident Joey Moser discovered that someone had dumped hot stove ashes into some wood shavings in his barn, Grimes said Tuesday afternoon.

Grimes said the two had an ongoing dispute.

“Basically they don’t get along,” said Grimes.

No fire actually started, but Grimes said he could see heat damage in the area where the ashes were dumped.

Grimes said it was a “fairly straightforward case.”

“He was identified and charged with the attempted arson,” Grimes said, adding that the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department assisted in the arrest.

  1. “Basically they don’t get along”…..I have a couple of acquaintances and we don’t basically get along either……but we don’t try to burn each others property down…..thankfully…….

  2. He jsut got confused. He is from Smithfield. He thought his neighbors barn had pork legs in it ready for smoking. He was going to make Smithfield Ham that is all. However he forgot that he was in Smithfield, Maine and not Smithfield, Virginia. The smoke got a little to hot and that barn caught on fire. Perhaps those hams made a nice smoked barbeque instead?

  3. Did he try to burn down the barn because the owner hit him squarely in the head with a shovel???

  4. I hope it makes all of you feel good to make fun of someone with Brain damage.Pat got into a motorcycle accident when he was a teenager and he almost died.Sometimes he does not think right or do the right thing but he cannot help it sometimes.
