PORTLAND, Maine — Maine transportation officials are delaying the end date for a state-run van pool service.

The Department of Transportation announced last month it was shutting down its GoMaine program on May 1, citing lack of funding to replace the service’s aging passenger vans. About 225 people use the service, which provides rides for commuters between various towns and cities around the state.

Van pool riders say they’re hoping that a long-term solution can be found to keep the vans rolling.

Sen. Ron Collins, chairman of the Legislature’s Transportation Committee, told the Portland Press Herald that the transportation commissioner has indicated the service will run until September.

Officials say several companies have expressed interest in taking over some of the routes.
