TROY, Maine — A man accused of pushing a pregnant woman off a short flight of stairs Monday night has been arrested.
Dean Spaulding, 34, of Detroit Road allegedly got into an argument with a woman about her leaving his home, Chief Deputy Jeff Trafton of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday.
“She wanted to leave, because she didn’t like what was happening in the residence,” he said.
Spaulding got upset, Trafton said, and allegedly pushed the woman off three porch steps.
She was concerned about her baby after the fall and called an ambulance to take her to Thayer Memorial Hospital in Waterville.
“We believe she and the baby are OK,” Trafton said.
When police went to the home, the woman already had gone to the hospital, and Spaulding denied that he had pushed her off the stairs.
Officials are continuing to investigate the incident, and more charges may be pending, Trafton said.
Spaulding was charged with elevated aggravated assault against a pregnant woman and violation of his conditions of release from a prior arrest.
He remained in custody at Waldo County Jail in Belfast on Tuesday afternoon, and an official there said bail was set at $5,000 for the charge of assault. However, because Spaulding also was charged with violation of his conditions of release, no bail is being allowed.

Even if he is your baby’s father, leave him anyway. Neither you or your child need someone like that in your life. There are plenty of men out there that will treat you like gold.

Most women are not of the mindset you describe- sounds like you had a bad experience with one.
OH I do hear you…I’ve known a great deal of women who CHOOSE to be in relationships with abusers and it’s disgusting. Despite the fact that I know there’s a whole lot of insecurities and psychology behind their choices, I also lose a lot of empathy for women who choose that life. I was just curious if we knew that was the case here.
