GRAND ISLE, Maine — A Main Street restaurant is a total loss after a fire gutted the structure just before 8:30 a.m. Thursday.

Fire Chief Gary Campbell said firefighters believe the fire at Cravings Restaurant started in the cellar, but an official from the State Fire Marshal’s Office is trying to determine the exact cause.

Campbell said a neighbor reported the fire after seeing smoke billowing from the building. Firefighters from Van Buren and St. Leonard, New Brunswick, joined Grand Isle to help extinguish the blaze at the restaurant, which Campbell said was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.

The chief said the current owner, Lee Beaulieu, just remodeled the business when he bought it a few years ago because it had caught fire under a previous owner.

Campbell said he was not sure whether Beaulieu had insurance but he believed that he did.

Crews were still on the scene at 1 p.m. and Campbell said he expected them to remain there for another hour or two.
