With the University of Maine men’s basketball team coming off a 12-17 season, head coach Ted Woodward has come under scrutiny by some critics.
UMaine athletic director Steve Abbott, who in December awarded Woodward a three-year contract extension through June 2015, remains steadfast in his support of the Black Bears’ eighth-year head coach.
He evaluates Woodward, who earns $100,000 per year, on more than wins and losses.
“Ted’s a coach who really does a great job in all aspects of managing a college student-athlete and he’s somebody who supports them both athletically and academically,” Abbott said. “He’s done a great job putting quality kids in this program who are fine athletes but who represent the school well and that, I think, is a reflection of the head coach.”
UMaine struggled during its America East Conference schedule, going 6-11 against league opponents. The Bears were the No. 7 seed in the AE tournament, which is one spot lower than what conference coaches predicted in their preseason poll, and lost to Vermont in the quarterfinals.
UMaine lost seven of its last eight contests overall after dropping eight of its last nine during the 2010-11 campaign.
The lackluster conference record was magnified by the Bears’ 8-5 start, which included competitive efforts in losses to Connecticut and Notre Dame.
“We finished about where people projected us to finish, but it had a real feeling of disappointment because the team showed such potential at points over the course of the season,” Abbott said.
He pointed out some of the challenges the Bears faced, including key injuries to junior Mike Allison and senior Svetoslav Chetinov, and the resulting lack of frontcourt depth. UMaine also experienced growing pains associated with using three first-year players — Justin Edwards, Kilian Cato and Xavier Pollard — extensively.
“When Mike and Alasdair [Fraser] had to go it alone in there, it was a much tougher run for them than when somebody was there to take some pressure off them,” Abbott offered. “We really missed having Svet, his big presence, in there.”
The Bears also had lost five key contributors from the 2010-11 ballclub coming into this season.
Abbott acknowledged the league losing streaks of five and four games were disappointing to all involved.
“It was tough on those guys emotionally this season,” he said.
Still, he doesn’t believe there were any underlying issues involving the relationship between Woodward and the players that would have contributed to the inconsistency.
“They’ve all been committed and worked hard and been supportive of Ted and all their coaches,” Abbott said.
He is confident UMaine will continue to be competitive as Woodward and his staff try to bring in players to help fill the void left by the outgoing senior class, which also includes school career 3-point leader Gerald McLemore and guards Andrew Rogers and Raheem Singleton.
“[Woodward’s] not satisfied where the team is, but I know that he loves the core of the team that is coming back, as do I. There’s a couple pieces that are missing,” said Abbott, who lauded the seniors for their efforts.
Despite having lost nine players, including eight seniors, the past two seasons, UMaine has some strong building blocks in Fraser, Allison, Edwards, Pollard and Cato. The Bears also will look for expanded contributions from Jon McAllian of Bangor and Zarko Valjarevic along with the return of injured Noam Laish and Ethan Mackey and the arrival of any newcomers.
Looking at the big picture, Abbott appreciates the way Woodward goes about his job on a daily basis.
“In terms of being a co-worker and administrator, he’s been exceptional in the business aspects of the coaching job,” Abbott said. “Things you don’t see on the court, but things that are a very important part of the job.”
UMaine women take first step
Abbott commended first-year UMaine women’s basketball coach Richard Barron for helping generate a bit of momentum going into next season.
The Bears went 8-23, doubling their win total from the previous season, and won an America East tournament game for the first time in seven tries.
“I loved the way this team played down the stretch,” Abbott said. “They played extremely well together.
Seniors Samantha Baranowski, Brittany Williams and the injured Samantha Wheeler are going out on a somewhat positive note.
“I was so pleased for those three players in particular to have that experience and to have that success after all they’ve been through,” Abbott said.
However, the UMaine women remain a team very much in transition.
Still, there have been challenges. Four players — including freshman Rebecca Knight of Alfred — have left the program. That leaves Barron and UMaine with only seven returning players, but Abbott believes Barron is putting the program back on track.
“He’s the right fit for the program and he has embraced the challenge,” Abbott said.
“He’s very methodical about doing the things that need to be done to build the program, but also in terms of providing that inspirational lift to both the players and the fans,” he added.
Correction: An earlier version of this story contained an incorrect reference to the time of Woodward’s contract extension. Abbott announced the three-year extension on Dec. 22, 2011.

This is laughable at best, and proves that someone is reading mbr ;)
people like you shouldn’t be allowed to make comments on here he won’t go anywhere and i have said all along i would love to see you run a college program i bet you would be fired half way through the season
Half way? More like a half-day ;) Especially at this Cracker Jack so-called D1 program.
Please do me a favor and email Pete Warner and ask him to have me banned, ok Matty? I’m fairly certain he doesn’t have the sack too, considering he hasn’t had the nads to write a real article about the problems with UMO athletics in how many years? :)
I wish you guys could realize how……oh, nuts, what was the phrase again……oh yeah, “tiresome and unnecessary” it is to point how pathetic this coach/program have been.
Let’s see – Pete is responsible for the poor condition of the basketball program and Larry is responsible for the poor condition of the hockey program. Is that about it?
Oyeah right and must love to see UM have a losing record in woman’s and men’s basketball every year is a draw to UMO. Good thing Football and Hockey are on a winning role. As far as BDN sports writer they are awful Ernie and Larry write nothing very very boring.
Agreed, Matt. Nostra would probably be fired after two games, and Dunbar too!
Abbott maybe you need to go run for US Senate. 12 and 17 great season for Woodward come on Steve. Would you have been happy when you where playing at Orono High School with a record like that. NOOOO
Is this the same Abbott that said “if you don’t win, you won’t last long” last year when Blodgett was canned? He needs to grow a pair and realize his buddy Ted isn’t cut out to be a DI head coach. Abbott is such a politician…
It is obvious Maine Mens basketball means nothing :( Where else can you get a D-1 headcoach for $100,000?
While 12-17 is not a stellar record by any means, it certainly is more than respectable when compared with Blodgett’s.
Simply ridiculous! Why is every other coach, seemingly, held to a standard of winning but woodward is held to a standard of having good guys that like him? Abbott is confident they will continue to be competitive? What??? 12 – 17 ?? Bottom 3 of the worst league in America?? This column, like most of Mr. Warners columns has more excuses in it than an 8 year old that didn’t clean his room. Granted, most of the excuses this time are coming from Abbott, but it’s time somebody wrote an article that told the truth!!!
Woodward has absolutely no relationships to his players……he doesn’t talk to them and they don’t talk to him…..no respect their whatsoever.
Do you really think that an Athletic Director, who is not only responsible for the success of said school’s athletic programs and student-athletes, but also for its financial success is truly satisfied with the performance of the Men’s BBall program this year? I highly doubt it. What Abbott says to the media is not necessarily true, but I do think it is important for him to remain outwardly positive while exploring his options. He is a lawyer, so I have no doubt the contract extension can be easily broken. Abbott is alot smarter than you think he is, and I think overall he’s doing a terrific job in this role. I think it would be a huge loss if he left the school. Regarding the MBB program, it is sad to see it in such disarray, but it’s also quite difficult to recruit talented men’s basketball players to Orono.
Can the contract be broken? Certainly — if the university buys out Woodward or if it fires Woodward for cause. The easiest way to break it would be for Woodward to resign and the school agree to let him go.
Bobby Knight is not walking through that door.
Abbott quotes on Woodward:
“In terms of being a co-worker and administrator, he’s been exceptional in the business aspects of the coaching job,” Abbott said. “Things you don’t see on the court, but things that are a very important part of the job.”
Meaning? – Ted brings in the big bucks from playing teams like Connecticut, Notre Dame, Maryland, Syracuse, etc and the dollars help the athletic department. Wins, losses and fans aren’t important as long as Teddy continues to do this.
Abbott quotes on Barron:
“He’s the right fit for the program and he has embraced the challenge,” Abbott said.
“He’s very methodical about doing the things that need to be done to build the program, but also in terms of providing that inspirational lift to both the players and the fans,” he added.
Meaning? – Barron is enthusiastic, personable and can coach! His attributes will build a winning program; put fannies in the seats and dollars in the till.
And there you have it folks, its two different ways of ringing the Cash Register, one by willing to continue to accept losing and the other by starting to win again. Who said politicians (former) can’t see both sides of an argument.
Steve …F Y I … The WBB team won 6 of their 8 wins against teams that won a total of 7 ( SEVEN ) D – l games all season .. They are losing a huge amount of their on court experience ( Baranosky , Williams , Knight ). I don’t see them competing for anything but the 8-9 A E slot again. The Maine MBB team will be lucky to have the same record again next year… Season’s tickets on sale now. .. My suggestion would be to play some games at the new Bangor Audie and scrap plans for the Pits. Students have shown no support for the BB teams… move the act downtown.
all he talked about was this season!!!what about the previous 7 ? well we know how they went.
Steve Abbot is a leader in every sense of the word. UM is very, very lucky to have his talents at this critical juncture in the school’s history. It is no longer business as usual at UM.
Abbott “doesn’t believe there were any underlying issues involving the relationship between Woodward and the players that would have contributed to the inconsistency.” Are you kidding me…there is NO relationship between Woodward and his players……and NO confidence in his coaching ability….there have been major issues within the team each of the last few years.
Has Abbott ever talked to a men’s basketball player … past or present?
Either Mr. Steve Abbott is being insincere with Mr. Pete Warner (not a great stretch considering the lack of followup questions whenever the BDN does a piece like this) or he really has no clue about the severity of the fissures deep within the men’s basketball program.
Here are a few followup questions for Mr. Warner to ask the next time he sees Mr. Abbott:
Re: Injury to Svet Chetinov as a crucial blow to UMaine’s hopes for success.
Followup: Chetinov, although we’re sure he’s a fine student and citizen, has not earned much playing time his first three years. So, now, as a senior, his injury is a focal point for why the team struggled in February and March? Really?
Re: Players fully supporting the coaches and representing the school well.
Followup: Did you check into the facts surrounding the senior captain, leading scorer and the school’s all-time 3-point shooter skipping the America East tournament because of an illness? Do you consider not even making the trip as respectful of coaches and teammates and represents the program in a positive light?
Secondary followup: Does the UMaine monitor its athletes’ Twitter accounts and do you consider some of the tweets representative of the school’s core values?
Re: The reference to inexperience and finishing “about where the team was picked to finish.”
Followup: Do you believe that finishing where a team is picked is reflection of a healthy, competitive program? What of those seasons when the team is picked higher and goes belly up by the end of the year?
Secondary followup: Every year, there seems to be a reliance on the term “inexperience.” (Look at the archives, it’s there and it’s regurgitated no matter what the roster make-up). Why are UMaine freshmen still freshmen and sophomores still sophomores at the end of a long season when self-respecting programs view them as sophomores and juniors by the time February and March roll around? Mr. Abbott, do you prescribe to the theory that if you give someone an excuse or reason to lose or under perform, they will use it? What is your experience in that regard? Do you subscribe to the theory that excuses are for losers?
Re: On remaining competitive.
Followup: UMaine is on the verge of tying the league futility mark of eight consecutive losses in the conference tournament. Do you consider that competitive?
Secondary followup: During the past eight years, UMaine has gone 38-34 in the month of January. During the months of February and March, the record is 19-51, playing the same schools with the same players. How do you explain a winning percentage of .527 in January and a dip to .271 in February and March?
Re: In an earlier story, you referred to Mr. Ted Woodward as having “great vision” for the program, but did not offer specifics.
Followup: What is that vision? And, can anybody in the administration share that vision with the fans of basketball?
Correction, they were 11-17, as the selection committee (nor myself) acknowledge the win against UMMachias CC. Cracker Jack program w/ Cumberland Farms brand Cracker Jacks :)
