EAST MILLINOCKET, Maine — A wood stove or recent electrical work might have ignited a fire that destroyed a concrete factory and connected office on Friday, firefighters said. No injuries were reported.
The first firefighters to arrive at Lee’s Redi Mix Concrete Inc. off Route 11 seven minutes after the 10:30 a.m. alarm knew immediately that an interior attack on the fire was out of the question, East Millinocket Fire Chief Les Brown said.
Flames were already burning through the roof and one side of the building, which was filled with thick smoke likely caused by the ignition of portions of a 120-foot-long rubber belt that ran concrete through mixing and preparation machinery, Brown said. Several large plastic drums inside the plant were also afire.
“There was just no way,” Brown said Friday. “It was so black inside that we had to fight everything from the outside.”
Plant workers and firefighters from East Millinocket and Medway used a backhoe to pry open parts of the building in an attempt to save tools and valuable items within it, including a large generator, office records and machinery, Brown said.
Two large tanks that held chemicals used to make concrete appear to have been salvaged, Brown said.
East Millinocket firefighters almost immediately radioed Medway for help when they arrived. A tanker truck from the Great Northern Paper Co. mill brought water to the scene, and Mattawamkeag firefighters covered Medway.
The steady rainfall and cold that firefighters endured throughout most of the day helped keep workers and firefighters from overheating, Brown said.
The last firefighters left the scene at about 5 p.m.
Plant workers had a wood stove going the night before that might have set off the blaze, but electrical work recently finished might also have caused it, Brown said.
Inspector Stu Jacobs of the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office will try to determine what caused the fire, Brown said.
According to town tax records, the business is owned by Emery Lee and Sons Inc., a construction company in Millinocket. A Lee family member at the scene declined to comment on the fire.
The fire was the second East Millinocket firefighters handled on Friday. A minor fire in the recycling room at the GNP mill on Main Street reported late in the afternoon took about an hour to clear, Brown said.
“The guys all handled it good. They are sitting here drinking Mountain Dew and eating pizza right now,” Brown said.

Something tells me OSHA wouldn’t like seeing that guy climbing ontop of the ‘stick’ of that excavator.. very dangerous.
an emergency situation,come on,go nit pick someplace else,like where you work
I have to agree that you do what you must to control a situation like this. Unfortunalty OSHA and the Maine Bureau of Labor who oversees OSHA standards will look at this differently.
Good luck telling OSHA not to nit pick.
OSHA has no say whatsoever for municipal employees, Maine BLS does.
Emergency situation or not OSHA rule apply. Many years ago the Dixmont Fire Chief was cited by Maine BLS for a number of violations and the fire was on his property.
Sooooooo What!!!!
A comment was made that OSHA/BLS rules should not apply because of an “emergency” situation. That is not true and the example I posted was proof of that. Does that answer your questions?
Thanks BUT I did not have any questions..
So what is a question. Doesn’t matter if you end the “sentence” in exclamation points or not.
Forget it jd, just forget it…
Are you for real? because there is an emergency situation it is okay to throw out all safety measures and just do whatever? yah. right. dont think so. this man climbing around on that greasy, smooth, stick. could have easily fallen off and broken his neck.
They are trying to save a structure and a business, you bring up OSHA? What is wrong with you? If you ever have a fire at home or business lets make sure we dig out the OSHA play book and read it first!
newsflash.
OSHA has a lot to say. No matter what the circumstances, you can’t be skirting the rules and getting rescuers killed or putting others lives in jeopardy.
Your comment was pretty shortsighted.
Well Gov, please don’t respond to my house if I was to have a fire! Oh I am not sure what the newsflash was?
If I did, I would do it safely.
Don’t worry The_Guvnah won’t show up for anything that involves real work! Sitting behind a desk spending tax payers money is his job!
Scary Shot of workers on this piece of equipment! Accident waiting to happen never mind a Fire. OSHA Target? OMG!!!
He is tied off;)
At least 3 times Police on scene were asked to remove Mr. Lee from the building and equipment so they could safely fight the fire. And also Millinocket was called for mutual aid as well as a tanker from Great Northern Paper. Which happens to have a fire in the Paper Mill right now tones just went out a few minutes ago.
An u know this how?
The Katahdin Region IS scanner land…
Does come in handy at times !!
Heard it with my own ears, and I wasn’t the only one that heard it.
heresay………that is not true.
you have no clue.
Really well I’ll tell ya what the radio communications are recorded go check them out! 3 times!!! And I didn’t even explain what ALL was said the third and final time!!
There making room for a bigger landfill.
You really think a man losing his business is funny!!!!!!!!!!!! I don’t, grow to hell up!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No, a fire is never funny, especially when it comes to the dangers of loosing a life. Whether they are insured, or not? The proximity to the dump, that doubtful might be possible. Calm down a little and watch your language.
Your empathy for the family and their business is noted.
Believe me when it comes to fire, it is more than empathy. As with a lot of people we look before we leap, and have to be brought back down to reality.
In this case, I think the business is family owned by matriarch Margaret Lee and her boys. They employ many local folks. Its neither funny nor decent. This is a small family owned business. I only know of them but I know what its like to work in a family business, it means you pay everyone else first and maybe if there’s anything left after payroll, trucks, fuel, tires, insurance, taxes, product manufacturer and other suppliers are paid then and only then do you divide whats left for the family. I hope this fire does not set them back for the season ahead. I hope that Margaret can get a portable plant going and get employees right back to work.
Geez bruce last time I am going to agree with you on anything… look how they whoop on me! You said it I just didn’t disagree… does someone have a gold star to place on the calendar not too often bruce and I agree on anything!
“not too often bruce and I agree on anything” Who are you talking to? Nobody cares what you say NOBODY! Yet you continue to make comments like you have friends on here. You have no friends here or in the Katahdin area. One day you will pay for your comments. Perhaps you are paying now just being you.
Agree 100%.
This chic is a wack job. We all know it. I mean, she thinks Schenck High School is a palace!!!
Your comment is right on.
Schenck High School a Palace? ROFLMAO you must be confused!
They think you are someone who moved far far away to get away from this sort of crap.
we all know who she is and what town she lives in…
You do and I do but evidently autumnfalls2011 thinks it is either AY or myself (Jennifer Murray)…..it isn’t. Calling out someone calling them a sue happy pig….and laughing about having a husband with a broken back is a bit much. They want sympathy….they had my sympathy. Sad to lose a family business. But it is hard to feel sympathy for someone who is so bitter they can’t move on and get over the past. I feel sorry for people like that.
Why do you people bring this personal crap in the comments of the BDN? I don’t know who you are and don’t care to know your personal business, however i do know who Loli is and have a big problem with her nasty and ignorant comments about people around the area. BDN should not allow comments at all!!!!!!
BDN Should allow comments, as long as people use their real names. A lot of the problems wouldn’t occur if people were held accountable for what they write.
Maybe
hopefully they can rebuild.Sad to see a business go through this.
Maybe u should go lick some more lollipops or get your facts straight
My facts are 100% correct!
and Lollipopaddict,grow to hell up and get the hell off the scanner!!! Find a better hobby,would you want comments like if it was you
How does it feel to go out in public and know what people are thinking when they see you? Please answer the question…
Lollipopaddict might be a lot of things but she hasn’t sued anyone to my knowledge.
I know the people you are talking about. NO amount of money can make up for all that family has been through.
Maybe if someone wasn’t in such a hurry to get home the man would be in one piece working today instead of looking at having further surgeries to repair injuries that were not his fault.
~~~
BOY I must a got my moneys worth on that scanner to work that great roflmao! Talk about clueless!
Guvnah is earning $98.20/hr right now.
Thanks.
If you aren’t around the people that run the buisness and you wernt at the fire, you have no place syaing anything
Missy can’t help herself! If you look up ignorant in the dictionary it would say: see Missy D. from East Millinocket!
It shocks me that the people or family members of the people she attacks on a daily basis don’t have a nice talk with her up close and put a stop to her insults. She will insult the wrong person someday!!!
Stop hiding behind screen names and come out of your little closet
dont hold your breath ry. some people are too scared to let people know who’s really hiding behind the screen cause their afraid of the karma thats gonna strike them in the back of the head.
