WASHINGTON — George Clooney and his father were arrested Friday during a protest outside the Sudanese Embassy, and the actor said he has asked President Barack Obama to engage China on stopping a humanitarian crisis in northern Africa.

The protesters accuse Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir of provoking a humanitarian crisis and blocking food and aid from entering the Nuba Mountains in the county’s border region with South Sudan.

ABC News reported that among those arrested was President of United to End Genocide and former Maine Congressman Tom Andrews.

Clooney, his father, Nick Clooney, and others including Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Moran of Virginia, NAACP President Ben Jealous and Martin Luther King III, were arrested after being warned three times not to cross a police line outside the embassy. They were handcuffed and placed into a U.S. Secret Service van. Congressmen Jim McGovern, D-MA, Al Green, D-TX, and Enough Project Co-Founder John Prendergast, according to a police statement.

The arrest came after Clooney met this week with Obama, testified in the Senate and attended a state dinner for British Prime Minister David Cameron.

Clooney told The Associated Press before he was arrested that he can only hope to draw attention to the crisis in Sudan but that he doesn’t know if any progress has been made. He said he was impressed, though, with Obama’s engagement on the issue.

“It’s amazing to sit down with a world leader who knows all of the intricacies of what’s going on in Sudan,” he said.

The actor said he asked Obama to involve China more in pushing for a solution in Sudan. He said international leaders need to “follow the money” flowing to Sudan’s leaders to expose corruption.

“This is a moment where we have a chance to do something because if we don’t, in the next three to four months, there’s going to be a real humanitarian disaster,” Clooney said before his arrest.

“It’s such a silly thought to think you’re actually succeeding in any of this,” he said. “But if it’s loud enough and you keep making it loud enough at the very least people will know about it, and you can’t say we didn’t know. That’s the first step.”

  1. Kudos to Tom Andrews and the others for taking a stand and making some noise about this terrible situation.  I have to admit I don’t remember him being so bold as our Congressman.

    1. Pure theater.  None of these liberal sympathizers will touch protesting against NDAA allowing the Justice Department to arrest and detain US citizens indefinitely, the TSA molesting children, Eric Holder’s Fast and Furious resulting in the death of at least one law enforcement official and countless guns in the hands of drug lords, allowing US military to be used in this country, and the current hyper inflation caused by poor fiscal policy.

      1.  a  liberal is someone who walks out of the room when an argument turns into a fight
a conservative is a liberal who has been mugged

    2. Taking a stand and making some noise is great.  But since when did getting arrested become cool?  All the resources that are and will be wasted, just to get these people a little media coverage, is such a waste.

    1. Steps up? You mean acts like a fool…
There are countless isues in this country that that fool could address, but since he’s incompetent and standing up for them would mean standing against Obama, he refuses and just makes a show.

      1. Yep, Domestic Violence isn’t a human rights issue… Neither is the freedom to get a job and not have to answer to a whackjob union boss…

Reality never darkens your doorstep, does it?

        1. Right to work doesn’t mean “not answering to a union boss”, it means not having to pay the portion of the dues that relate to collective bargaining.  No one is required to join the union and when you claim they are the validity of your argument is called into question.

BTW, I’m not opposed to right to work laws although I do think LePage’s motivation is union busting as opposed to helping non-union workers.

    1. And daughter Lauren mopping the jailhouse floors! They gotta stay close don’t cha know.

          1. you aren’t fooling anyone boy. you know when you google incompetent jerk a picture of LePage is the first thing to pop up.

      1. wow, you must hate poor people and be against job creation? There is a professional way to run a state, no need for such ignorance and no class. Having him as Gov is just plain embarassing!

        1. The only embarassment is that he has had to do so much work to get the state in shape. The dems destroys this state with entitlement programs and union gifts for far too long.

LePage is doing a great job. He may not be the most tactful governor we’ve had, but he’s doing exactly what he said he would do, unlike the dems, who have lied and created just to retain power.

      2. Really? Such as woman don’t need cancer screening until in their 50s, when most peoples cancers start in their 30s and 40’s.
I think maybe Andrews should be more corncerned about Msine and the U.S.
Zero in Brownie points for him.

    2. Hmmm…Tom Andews? That guys was a royal piece of work when he was here. Can they keep him in jail in perpetuity?

  2. who cares…..get a grip clooney shameless self promotion why doesnt he put forth some efforts to help some situations right here in the united states of america.  i hope he goes to jail but he wont.

    1. Compared to the drought and disease ridden areas of Africa where people are without food, water, shelter, or protection from slavers and rapists – I’d say even the worst-off homeless person in America has it better. People are dying over there. George may be a Hollywood actor, but his name gets headlines, and that is exactly what he wants. And good for him, he’s getting the word out. He gets arrested, everyone puts it in the papers and the cause is heard.

    2.  You may want to get used to the name Senator George Clooney (D)-California… He has everything he needs, name recognition, influence, and he is more popular than Arnold. It is California after all, and they love electing actors.

  3. If I were ever going to be arrested this is how I’d want to read ….you know….that I’m being arrested with George Clooney. :-)

      1. I’m guessing that when you’re arrested, it will involve a lot of intoxicants, not art or any form of common sense.

  4. I have to wonder why the attack on Tom Andrews by the conservatives?  Is there a platform in the Republican Party supporting Genocide?  Do they even know where the Sudan is?  I don’t support Tom Allen’s politics – he is way to far left for me, but why attack his right to protest or free speech or to peacefully demonstrate?

There are constitutional amendments other than the second.  (I would also recommend that the neocon Hannity fascists check out the 9th Amendment – It’s my personal favorite)

When did it become and embarrassment to a state to come out against genocide?

Maybe they are getting their pro genocide marching orders from their Oxycontin popping hero Rush Limbaugh.  Believe what you believe, but listen to all the facts.

    1. Why pick on Andrews? Because its just fun. Below are some posts involving Gov. LePage. You have brought in Rush Limbaugh and Hannity. Care to describe the relevance they have to this story? I didn’t think so.

      1.  Why didn’t you just finish your statement with “Oh Snap”.

I would love to describe Rush the Pillhead and Sean Hannity’s relevance.  They make a living telling their followers that they should not listen to “Main Stream Media” and espousing hate and discontent and the message that anyone that disagrees with them is wrong.  Hence the attacks on Tom Allen for speaking out against Genocide.

As for Governor LePage, I have respect for his position and actually like some of the things he is doing, while other things I don’t care for.  Because there is an R or a D after someone’s name, it does not me I have to be against everything they believe in.  I don’t share in the belief system that I have to follow in lockstep with one agenda – I like to think I am capable enough to have more choices that A) or B).

Back to the pillhead.  Rush Limbaugh is the first to speak out against locking up drug addicts or paying consequences for “personal choices”, but he is more than happy to knock back oodles of Oxy – being the hypocrite that he is.  Blah Blah Blah, sanctity of marriage – I do buy that, he’s heading for his fifth one!!!

Do I think that there are talking heads with liberal bias?  Absolutely – The difference is that Bill Mahar or Keith Olbermann are glad to have the audience listen to the Hannity’s of the world, because they realize how ignorant they sound to a rational human being, thus making them sound more legitimate – I think they also believe it is okay for someone to have a rational thought that is not implanted by Fox News.

So, while I doubt you will understand the relevance of my explanation, I will leave you to assume that I am busy reading The Communist Manifesto, while you climb into your Dittohead PJ’s and pray to God to forgive you for the lustful thoughts you are having about Ann Coulter dressed in a Ilsa, She Wolf of the SS Outfit.

        1. Harry- focusing on one part of your commentary, namely your comments on Gov Lepage and your viewpoints: Thank you for a ray of sensibility in this “comments” section. I have to hail your viewpoint of agreeing with some things he does, and disagreeing with others.  I laud you for not just slamming someone without cause, like some of these narrow minded, self centered souls do. My hats off to you.

    2.  >Is there a platform in the Republican Party supporting Genocide?

They call it defending the homeland.

    3. I listened to both Limbaugh and Hannity live yesterday. Did you?? Limbaugh made no mention of the arrests. Clearly it didn’t bother him- or else you know he would’ve! Hannity STARTED his live program on the topic of George Clooney’s arrest. He said, “I know some of you might be surprised, but I have a lot of respect for Clooney and what he’s doing.” He never criticized him at all. Your assumptions are ridiculous. It’s time to grow up and actually LISTEN to programs before you bash what you “think” they are saying.

      1. Did he give some love to Tom Andrews too?

“I know some of you may be surprised by this, but I have a lot of respect for George Clooney and what he is doing”

Now, back to Barack Obama being a Muslim, with no birth certificate, and talking about how listeners should not dare to differ in opinion with me.  Hannity and Limbaugh are hate radio spewing Fascist propaganda.  They are today’s Joseph Goebbels….and for god’s sake, neocons, make up you mind whether Obama is a Socialist or a Fascist – he can’t be both.

  5. Hey George Clooney I am here too!! No I am not famous, not a millionare, but yes I have been arrested for fighting against unjustice, police brutally, against myself & my family!! I also help many people with mental health, since I have 3 kids, who have different types of Mental Health problems, & I have many friends & family that need my advise & entire community & world who can use my help!! My name is Yoana Vega-Mata, and I am on Facebook!! I am with you, your father, Jane Velez & the Obamas of course!!! Yes we can!!! May God bless us all!!!

  6. Mr. Obama made it illegal to protest in the USA, It is now a felony a crime and you can be jailed if you protest..Yet Mr Obama incourges protesting in other countries….
For those who were asleep, Yes it is now illegal to protest in your free country… go back to bed

    1. They were arrested because they crossed a line onto Embassy property. Let’s get our facts straight and our heads out in the open air. Sure, they wouldn’t have done any harm, but they were told not to cross a line onto foreign-owned territory, and they did. Simple as that. They weren’t arrested for protesting.

  7.  Now they want us to save oppressed people? We freed Iraq where the same atrocities where being committed and worse but George said that was bad? So does he support freeing the oppressed or is it just the ones HE thinks should be saved…

    1.  Iraq under Saddam was pretty mediocre compared to the hell that happens in countries like Sudan or Uganda.  We attacked Iraq for oil and to make daddy proud.  If we invaded countries to liberate people we would occupy most of Africa.  We even tried to “help” out Somalia once and got our asses handed to us.

      1. Ask the Kurds who got gassed by mediocre Saddam about that. Oh, you can’t because they are dead. There is some dispute as to how many but it was many. Not mediocre. Many. Hundreds of thousands. Many.

        1. Well if you compare gassing a 100,000 people from many miles away to slaughtering equal amounts of people up close and personal with machetes, AKs and cannibalism; both are pretty messed up. But one is a bit more darker than the other.  Oh those chemical weapons Saddam used against the Kurds, guess where he bought them from.

  8. Now that I see George Clooney is involved, I plan to do..nothing about this. I suggest some American Muslim groups work on this problem of one Muslim killing many others.

  9. It’s all about oil in Africa and the CIA  getting factions to fight each other then we step in and invade
    for Exxon Mobil.
It worked with the Iraq-Iran War  etc
