LAMOINE, Maine — A fire Monday morning destroyed a home on Route 184 and drew firefighters from half a dozen surrounding towns at they fought to put out the flames.
Assistant Fire Chief Stu Marckoon said Monday morning that the fire was reported around 8 a.m. by a homeowner. She had gone to feed some ducks in an outdoor enclosure, he said, and when she returned to the house she found flames inside. A man and two children who also live at the house already had left for the day, the man for work and the children for school, he said.
No one was hurt in the blaze, he said.
Marckoon said that initial reports indicate that the fire started in a downstairs bedroom but firefighters were unsure how it started. Marckoon said that, given the extensive damage, investigators might not be able to determine the cause.
The homeowners are Nicole Berzinis and Sean McLaughlin, Marckoon said early Monday afternoon. He said the home is insured.
The home and an ell attached to the back were gutted by the fire, which caused sections of the house to collapse as the flames weakened the charred structure. A nearby two-car garage and another out-building were not damaged.
Firefighters had the blaze under control by noon but still were working to dig through the rubble and put out hot spots, Marckoon said.
Several dozen firefighters responded from Lamoine, Ellsworth, Franklin, Hancock, Trenton, Sullivan, and Sorrento to fight the fire.
Marckoon said the State Fire Marshal’s Office has been contacted and plans to send investigators to the scene on Tuesday.

Big Fire.
Strange happenings in that little stretch of highway between the hills on that road.
Didn’t know Stu was the fire chief. Stay safe.
Stu is a one man town!
“Assistant Fire Chief Stu Marckoon”
He isn’t..Skip Smith is.
uh oh
So sorry to hear about the loss of their home, but so happy to hear that no lives (human or animal) were lost!
I agree!
Things can be replaced but people cannot. Glad they are okay.
Very sorry that people have lost their home. I can remember my father telling me that he used to play with the children that lived in that house back in the early 60’s. Im guessing the house goes back at least 30 year before that. All that old wood would have made it go up like a tinderbox. Very unfortunate for the family but at least all are okay.
I am going out on a limb here, but can someone explain why ‘Guest’ comments are always removed? I have never had the chance to read one, but if it is a real commentor shouldn’t they be removed permanently?…..or are we a ‘Guest’ when one of our comments are removed?
When a comment is removed the user name and comment is removed a then appears as guest, comment removed. In some cases the comments get removed although they are not profane, hateful or anything like that. In this case the poster asked in a round about if this fire could be connected to a very tragic event that occured about half a mile down the road a week ago. Somehow that must have been deemed not appropriate. Some comments are worthy of getting a person banned forever in my opinion. Others not so much and it makes sense just to take the comment down.
It also does that if you remove your own comments – at least for people using a disqus account to post.
