ROCKLAND, Maine — Local police recovered two stolen cars in separate incidents within a four-hour span Thursday evening.
In the first incident, Waldoboro police reported that a car had been stolen from outside a minimall on Route 1 in that town. The report of the theft of the vehicle came in shortly before 5 p.m.
At 7 p.m., Rockland police located the vehicle parked in the Shaw’s supermarket parking lot. The officers then watched the vehicle until four males went to it. The four people were interviewed and two of them — Kristopher Freemantle, 18; and Brian Gillespie, 18, both of Bath — were issued summonses in connection with the theft of the vehicle and released at the scene, according to Rockland Deputy Police Chief Wally Tower. Two male juveniles were taken into custody by Waldoboro police.
The keys had been left in the vehicle, Tower said.
At 11 p.m., Rockland police Officer Scott Solorzano checked a vehicle and learned it had been reported stolen Feb. 21 from Enterprise Rental in Thomaston.
He followed the vehicle to the Coughlin Park apartment complex on Rankin Street, Tower said, and arrested the driver, Norma Jean Wood, 53, of South China, for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. There also were two outstanding warrants for Wood for forgery and theft, Tower said.
She was taken to the Knox County Jail and released on bail Friday morning.
So you STEAL a car (with the keys in it!!), go pick up your homies, and the repercussion is to get a summons and sent on your way?? WTH? When the court date comes around, I suspect they won’t get much more.
Maybe it was the “homies” that were picked up after the theft that were summonsed only? It appears two of four were taken into custody, while the two others were only summons.
Two were juveniles. They were arrested and probably released to the parents. the other two were over 18. That makes them adults. Don’t know why they were only summonsed and not arrested. I thought that you went to jail for car theft.
In the recent prison fire in Central America where hundreds were killed, one victim was serving 11 years for car theft….
“The four people were interviewed…” it sounds like they waived their rights and confessed before a trial, hence only a summons.
