PORTLAND, Maine — Backers of an effort to create the state’s first specialty license plate for motorcycles are stepping up efforts to collect the necessary signatures to make the plate a reality.

Supporters need commitments and $25 payments from a least 500 motorcycle owners by the time the state Legislature adjourns in mid-April to ensure the creation of a pink-ribbon, breast cancer specialty plate for motorcycles.

State Rep. and cancer survivor Meredith Strang Burgess says more than 15,000 of the plates have been issued for passenger vehicles since they went on sale in 2008, raising more than $400,000 for breast cancer research.

Online registration for the motorcycle plates can be made at www.mainecancer.org/motorcycle.

  1. Wonder what the phrase on the bottom of the plate will read. Something like….OK2BLOUD ( I mean no disrespect to anyone dealing with this insidious disease)

  2. Really, this is a great idea!  There are many people, those such as my dear mother who passed away from breast cancer or have been treated successfully or are in the stages of treatment, can now be supported by specialty plates for cycles.  Men could develop prostrate or colon cancer…then it is no joke!  There are many female motorcycle drivers who just could well get on the sign-up list for these plates.

  3. The pink ribbon has been totally compromised and politicized by the latest antics of the religious right to deny health care to women and promote their anti-choice wedge issue. Komen for the Cure owns all the rights for the pink ribbon and it is controlled by conservative Republican operatives who have a mission that trumps women’s health. This all came to light when they tried to cut funding for low income women who sought care through Planned Parenthood. Forget the pink ribbon. It now represents the interests of a small group of power hungry elitists.

    1. Perhaps the plate suggested by ” coldbarnocker ” in his reply to “umustb1 ” would apply to you !

  4. Cancer is not Pink or Pretty, and Breast Cancer is not the only cancer affecting women nor are women the only ones affected by Cancer.  Good luck trying to get 500 Bikers to put pretty pink plates on their Bikes. To be realistic, a Skull and Crossbones symbol would be more appropriate as a representation of the horror that cancer actually is and also would be more acceptable as something a Biker would be apt to use as an adornment to his or her Motorcycle. How about a mention of all of the thousands of persons suffering from Ovarian Cancer, Lung Cancer, Colon Cancer, Bladder Cancer, Prostate Cancer, Brain Cancer, Uterine Cancer,  Lukemia and all of the other Cancers.

  5. I know how to make money. Make a 61% plate for the lefties. Let them put their money where their mouth is.
