WATERVILLE, Maine — About 100 searchers fanned out around Waterville Saturday looking for a sign of missing toddler Ayla Reynolds, who disappeared from her father’s home on Dec. 17.
Searchers found no signs of Ayla, but Public Safety Department spokesman Steve McCausland said they did discover the remains of 53-year-old Steven Brandon of Waterville, who was reported missing in 2004, along Messalonskee Stream. Foul play is not suspected in his death.
Among those looking for Ayla was Jen Dorman of Down East Emergency Medical Institute of Orono, who was at the search headquarters at Thomas College on Saturday afternoon. She said it wasn’t her first time searching for the little girl, whose second birthday is April 4.
“It’s haunting,” she said. “Every night you go to bed and you think about it. It keeps me up every night. We put blood and sweat and tears into this search. We’ll do it until we bring her home — that’s what we’re here for.”
Lt. Kevin Adam of the Maine Warden Service said that the spell of unseasonably warm weather is a primary reason why officials decided to launch another large-scale search for Ayla.
“It got rid of all that snow,” he said outside the mobile command center that was parked at Thomas College in Waterville. “It’s a perfect day to search, actually. It really worked out well for us.”
He said that the effort began about 7 a.m. and involved both re-searching old areas and looking at new ones. Volunteers from the Maine Association of Search and Rescue, local fire departments, the Maine State Police, the Maine Warden Service and 10 canine teams came from all over the state to take part in the search.
“It’s a good turnout,” Adam said.
Around mid-morning, searchers working behind the Alfond Youth Center on North Street found the skeletal remains of Brandon. His identification was found near the remains, according to McCausland.
Brandon apparently had disappeared from Winter Street in February 2004, which is across the Messalonskee Stream from where his remains were found. McCausland said officials notified his mother before releasing the information to the media. His remains will be taken to the Maine state medical examiner’s office, police said.
No further details about his disappearance were available Saturday.
McCausland called the finding “coincidental” to the search for Ayla, who was 20 months old when she was last seen the night of Dec. 16 at her father’s home in Waterville. She was reported missing the next morning when her father, Justin DiPietro, said he discovered her bed empty.
Ayla’s mother, Trista Reynolds, lives in Portland.
Police are treating her disappearance as a crime, but no one has been charged. An undisclosed amount of Ayla’s blood was found in the partially finished basement that DiPietro used as his bedroom, and police have said that DiPietro and two other adults in the home that night haven’t been totally forthcoming.
DiPietro has said he has no idea what happened to his daughter or who is responsible.
“It’s been frustrating to police since December,” McCausland said, adding that police communication with DiPietro, his sister and his girlfriend has now essentially stopped.
Law enforcement agents have received nearly 1,000 leads about her disappearance and followed every one, he said. So far, overtime costs related to her case have added up to more than $100,000.
“We have an incredible amount of information that’s been gathered,” he said.
Even though the Saturday search didn’t turn up information about Ayla’s disappearance as volunteers combed through wooded terrain around Waterville, Oakland, Sidney, Norridgewock and Fairfield, it still was useful.
“We have now eliminated a great deal of Waterville,” McCausland said.
Among the searchers were Kelly Pontbriand of Gouldsboro with her border collie Tycho and Leslie Howe of Columbia with her German shepherd Frida, who are part of Maine Search and Rescue Dogs. The two- and four-legged searchers each wore blaze orange and carried GPS units with them as they prepared to investigate a wet, sparsely wooded 47-acre parcel near a residential neighborhood in Oakland.
“We want to help bring closure,” Pontbriand said. “Even if the outcome is not great, we’re still happy to go out and spend our time looking.”
Those words were echoed by Sharon Kenney of Corinth, who hit the ground with six other members of Maine Mounted Search and Rescue. They did not have their horses with them.
“I was happy to be part of something that might bring closure to the family,” she said.
It was the first time some of her team members have searched on foot.
“It was very educational,” she said. “You get right down there in the thorns and the puckerbrush and the mud.”
Warden Rick LaFlamme said that he left Biddeford at 2:30 a.m. to head north to help coordinate the search. He showed the maps and satellite photographs that the grid and canine searchers were using to look for the missing toddler. Points of interest, where police had received tips about Ayla, were marked on the maps.
“Hopefully we’ll find something that will lead us to finding Ayla,” he said. “We’re just going to keep trying. We’re not going to give up, that’s for sure.”
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

How can one keep quiet this long about a missing baby?? People MUST know something and how can they have that on their mind and not say anything?? Poor baby Ayla!!!
We can only hope that the pain of keeping in such a secret gets bad enough that they talk– and soon. Her family needs closure.
Sociopaths feel no pain for others No empathy. Did Ted Bundy feel bad about the people he killed?. Only felt bad about getting caught.
That’s sadly true. I’m sure whoever took Ayla also thinks he/she is so much smarter than the police. They always think they’re smarter than the whole world, even as the net closes in on them.
No one took Ayla. Someone in that house abused that baby and took her life and every one of those involved or who know anything and aren’t telling the police need to rot in prison for the rest of their miserable lives.
I Think The Same Thing.. Always Have!
Then why haven’t you presented your evidence of this to the police?
You should take your inside information to the authorities!
I am not sure if you have noticed or not, but they sure do seem to be much smarter than either the Waterville or State police. Even in the Casey Anthony case, they had her arrested on circustantial evidence and less time than this has taken and they didnt have direct evidence of her being the last person to see Caylee. We know from evidence and testimony that the father was the last person to see Ayla. It’s shameful that the authorities have not put more pressure on the adults that spent that night in that house. It’s also embarassing that they found a person missing for 8 years while searching for Ayla. What happened to that search? How, if this man was not burried did they not find him when he disappeared? I have often believed there are two types of people in this state. Very Important people with name or money, and the rest of us. Nobody gets arrested with Greenleaf because he was a nobody. The body of The transgender person who jumped this winter hasnt been found because she was nobody. The body of the author of many Maine books and articles is found in a day because she was SOMEBODY, and little Ayla is not found because she is nobody. The only reason we see the authorities spending as many resources on this little girl is because it has garnered national attention…I think we all realize that. Makes ya very very sad to be a Mainer.
Agreed…. I can hope though….
Sad but True!
I wonder if O.J. feels bad about being found innocent.
I bet Casey Anthony doesn’t. She feels relieved and is smiling and laughing. Living her puppy life with her new man.
preferably rots them from the inside out.
the
Of course someone knows something……Her father knows!
Hypnosis- perhaps the primary people involved would agree to be “put under.” Maybe one of them has some small fact deep in their mind that would help solve the mystery.
How about truth serum? Someone amongst them knows something.
I’m not sure they would agree to that measure.
Nobody ever had to consent to a Vulcan mind probe. No 4th amendment warrants required.
How about just coming forward like an adult and just explain what happened and let the chips fall where they may…..no serum, hypnosis, just plain guts to do the right thing for a helpless child and bring closure to this case for all of us. We are all human and our compassion for others dictates that we sick of the lies….do it for the innocent victim here….baby Ayla and lets move on…..Good Day!
Does anyone know if they have released information about the Cumberland Farms convienience store video tapes that the police took?
http://www.wmtw.com/Store-Turns-Over-Video-In-Connection-With-Reynolds-Investigation/-/8792672/9569156/-/23turxz/-/index.html
I’ve not seen anything since, but I may have missed it.
They won’t even release the 911 tape. So there’s got to be evidence on it.
Killer, the police are closing in on you. It’s just a matter of time. Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock. If you are one of the 3 adults who was in that house when Ayla disappeared, speak up. Now may be your last chance. Tick. Tock. They’re closing in on you.
If in fact she was murdered, where is the body? The river? The backyard? The woods? This is the baffling part.
if the body was dumped in the river the currents could carry it augusta gardner all this time down to the ocean bath bruswick
I don’t think that we will ever know what happened to that little girl at this point. Who knows, maybe IF they disposed of her, highly unlikely it would be anywhere around Waterville as they would know people would scrape from one end to the other. It seems to me, they would go someplace up north where no one really goes. Such a sad story.
I keep thinking that if he thought up the story of an intruder then perhaps if something happened to Ayla and she is no longer with us he took her to the Portland area to dispose of her. If he did this then tried to sway people to believing Trista (or someone she hired) entered his house and took Ayla — then Ayla’s body eventually being found in Portland would put suspicion on her. It’s just a thought but he was in Portland close to the time he reported her missing.
If he was in Portland anytime from after the last credible witness saw Ayla alive, I would definately go with that feeling. There is alot of water in Portland. Easy assess and like a needle in the haystack to find her. I’d tell the summer residents of Portland to start searching as well as residents, and fisherman. Its a HUGE city. If this can be confirmed that he was in Portland, the police need to appeal to the residents of Portland to search the water areas.
It has been confirmed…he was seen on a video tape at a store in Portland (at like 2 o’clock in the morning) I’m thinking it was on the 14th or 15th of December. He said he was there to retrieve some of his stuff from where he’d been living prior to his move to Waterville.
Time to look south if no one credible outside of that circle saw Ayla after the 15th. There is alot of water between Waterville and Portland but if his story sounds bizzare it is. They need to search Portland’s waters. She will be found, all in due time.
Hi Just, am thinking this also.. They did find blood in the basement that is a fact. The impounded their vehicles and gave them back saying they were clean, that is a fact. Now here comes some speculation, How did they remove her body, was another vehicle involved, did they put her body in a container? How did they get her out of the house without being caught, and not to create any more DNA?
“alot” ?
dood, u need too find sumthen betta two do
I was toying with that same thought.
someone will find her body sooner or later they just find a body of man missing since 2004 looking for her. that is good for his family gives them closure if he has a family
I hope it also gives Justin faith that we will find Ayla, as well as his close circle of friends and family. All in due time, we will find her. More areas are going to be searched and we are going to bring her home.
yup sometimes it takes a little more time especially such a small body
Unless he had a favorite hunting or fishing spot up North very unlikely. He was low on cash and gas is high. I’m certain her death wasn’t a well thought out plan. If he did have a planned trip to Portland because he had to go for other business, then I’m certain that is a perfect place to search. Very likely he could’ve tossed her out on the way or once he reached his destination, somewhere he was slightly or very familiar with. Trista needs to think hard if she knew him in Portland. I don’t know if this was the case. She might know of an area they were around that water was also located. People tend to deviate back to familiar areas, especially when scared.
The ocean is huge. Alot bigger than the Kennebec where they have been searching. Gosh, what a sick thought. I just wish something would prevail.
So True! Even the Kennebec is so long, my husband works between Bath and Portland and he keeps eyes and ears open. He says he walks the bridge down by Bath just hoping to spot something. No one wants to spot a baby, but even worse no one wants to see the murderer walking free. Closure is a must.
Sorry for the side comment, re: “Alot bigger than the Kennebec…”
“Alot” is not a word in the English language.
I apologize for your nitpicking. I am quite aware that alot is not a proper word, most of us realize that it is just one of those informal words. We are talking about a missing child and to start correcting people about the misuse of grammar and spelling is sort of going overboard! I could very easily start correcting folks as well on their improper spelling and grammar as well. Sometimes, it’s just nice to relax and not have to second guess every single thing you are saying to make your point. I am not writing a cover letter! I sincerely hope your day is better now.
or into a backwater eddy
I pray she is found.
This search is a really good thing. I am so glad they are doing this. because something isnt right in that matter. I hope they find her alive but it is getting pretty harsh now I wish they would tell how much blood was found. I am still praying for her safe return home..
If memory serves me right, a suspect in the murder of Bangor Postal Letter Carrier Peter Bassett at Judy’s cafe several years ago, was a Reynolds who move or resided in Waterville. I have left the first name off on purpose. I’m wondering if there is any relationship here ? Family wise that is.
A wrong never righted
Just thinking about this am. Ice is gone good time to be back at the water. Let’s find this adorable baby and give some closure to the family.
How can someone go into a strange house and steel a baby? un-real I don’t believe it. Some one in the family has knowledge of where she is and keeping it hidden this long is sick.
Justin was responsible for little Ayla’s safety while in his care… he let her down. I think he has to know far more than he is saying. How do just lose a child in your own home? How does that happen?
lets hope …..
why would the press conference be delayed 4 hours?? What is going on, i wonder..
And still is.
i know she is . think they got their idea from what she did . someday she might become reborn maybe then the truth will come out
How do they know the remains are that of 53-year-old Steven Brandon so soon?, surely even if there was ID on the man, they would still need to send him off for DNA testing and such to make sure they are 100% sure?…i hope they find this little princess soon, and hope alive and well, its been a way too long!!
Strange, considering the age of the skeleton and the number of people that go missing in America. I suppose if he had his drivers license in his back pocket, then they are assuming. But, you are correct, they should get a positive confirmation on dental records, it could be a man that stole his wallet! Seems like sloppy police work to release a name without 100% positive identification.
Steven Brandon’s ID was found nearby – AS – stated in the article.
The article did not go on about that discovery – the article is about Ayla Reynolds.
Well excuse me!! But that was added to the article after i made my comment, and if you care to keep reading my comment i did state that i hope they find Ayla, i wasnt ignoring the fact that this was about her, just stating i thought it weird how they can name the remains without being 100% sure!
No ones been arrested, therefore no one talks. That is the first mistake.
Arrests are (generally) preceded by probable cause and evidence.
Would YOU wish to be treated in any other way?
Is that a “mistake”?
Wait, these guys are re-tracing their steps over a spot they’ve already searched and don’t find Ayla, but do happen across some other random corpse? Boy, that raises more than a few questions….
yes it sure does – this guy went missing in 2004 and they find him right close to his home? competency issue no wonder they cant find the baby
So who is going to pay for this overtime anyways? Oh that’s right, nevermind
From today’s Boston newspaper.. Investigators continue to interview people and the crime lab continues to analyze items connected to the case, but talks with DiPietro, his girlfriend and sister have broken down, McCausland said — see things are still being analyzed and also money wise $100,000 just in overtime alone is being spent on this case.
I believe something in those polygraph’s indicated to the police that she is in a body of water, since they aren’t digging up landfills. I’d say which body of water and how many miles away? Considering the price of gas and their lack of funds, I would say they didn’t get far. Unfortunately, the current could have send a body to Bath by now. The truth will prevail in this case, we have the time, and justice will be served.
Someone needs to put on the big girl’s panties or big boys briefs and tell what happened to this beautiful little baby. I do know that anyone who could hurt a helpless child is nothing more than a coward and Karma will be waiting for them. Whoever did any harm to this baby if feeding off the slime pool. I truly hope the heat is getting hotter and hotter for you and will only burn you in time when someone who knows the truth comes forward to help prosecute you. Godspeed to those looking to bring this sweet angel home.
Justin be a man tell the police where she is. You know she will be found soon!
Justin be a man tell the police where she is. You know she will be found soon!
I believe she is still alive and has been quartered with a friend of her father within the city limits of Waterville.
Wild assumption? Based on the no grief reaction by the family – that’s all.
Would thinking that they have her stashed with friends or family…….dressed as a BOY be to far out there ?
Yes, most people bleed all over the basement on their way to being stashed safely somewhere. This isn’t rocket science.
I read that there was “some” blood. But that doesn’t stop people from speculating. Or, shouldn’t. She could still be alive.
If the word of her mother’s family is accurate, the amount of blood the police supposedly told them was present would equal death if she did not get medical attention. And since her dad didn’t take her to the doctor for her follow up for her arm, either because she was already gone or because he just didn’t care at all, I doubt he’d brought her in for something else that nobody knew of.
What is the motive behind her disappearance? Who wanted her out of the way? Mother? Father? Girlfriend? Why did she suddenly disappear? Was it because mommy was attempting to regain custody of her baby? Was it because daddy didn’t want mommy to have her back?
Why did daddy put baby to bed and forget about her until morning? Did he check on her before he went to bed? Would his girlfriend have checked? Was baby ever put to bed? How could baby get out of bed, open an unlocked door and walk out into the night? Why would baby do that? Did someone come to the house and pick up baby? If so, who would that be? Where would baby be taken? Where do mommy and daddy’s relatives and close friends live? Do they have any idea what might have happened? What do the neighbors know? Did they hear or see anything irregular occur around the home where baby lived?
Why is it mommy and daddy do not appear to be too concerned? Why is it they appear to be so calm? Mommy says she has to laugh and act ordinary, or, something like that? How can a mommy laugh when her baby has been missing prior to Christmas? Why is daddy so reclusive about baby? Why isn’t he checking with police every day? Why isn’t mommy checking with police every day?
If a hundred volunteers, with no attachment to the baby are searching, how can strangers be so concerned about a missing baby, whilst the family remains disinterested?
Its called “Hope for the best expect the worst”. I realize the chances are slim that she is still alive……but what IF ? Do you want to be the one to tell her mother she should just give up looking for her baby ?
That’s a good angle. Never thought about that. Really interesting. In any case, you can’t overlook anything. Nothing is too far out.
what would be the motive to stash her away?
WOW when I was reading the new headline my heart just about leaped out of my chest because if you read it too fast or before reading the last part, it sounds like they found her remains instead of talking about another persons remains. Holy cow that really got my nerves on edge. I’m glad they are able to find some closure for the other persons family.
Simply cannot understand why Alaya’s father and the two other “suspects” were “not forthcoming” all this time; even following the evidence of Alaya’s blood in the basement. Cannot the authorities take some kind of legal positioning forcing information from these people?
informati0n is the one thing that cant be taken by force.
Well,…..it just goes to show, it took em eight years to find a missing man……..I guess we should factor THAT into the calculation…..sadly.
Seems to me, the father of the child and his two cohorts know something about this incident. After all, I wonder with the blood in the basement of the home, what, exactly, have the police done to legally solve and totally investigate this case other than look for the baby? Enough was put on television about this incident, even into national media, and still people are wondering. Still, the innocent and helpless life of this child is somewhere only known by God and whoever could be involved in the alleged kidnap.
is this going to be shown on Northwoods Law?
Is this going to be shown on Northwoods law?
Something tells me that one day someone will come across her remains on the shore some wheres downstream, good dogs is what is needed and a lot of walking.
You would be surprised how a murderer or baby killer (parent) rationalizes what he/she has done to justify it. They first convince themselves that there was a “reason” for it. This case screams “custody”…as the day before the mother filed for full custody. Now jump to mommy of the father. She will do anything, and I mean anything to prevent her beloved child (parent of missing baby) from going to prison, remembering that is her “baby” that she will have to go to prison to visit. The pieces of the puzzle are that each of these “family” members and I use the term lightly have something on each other that will open the proverbial “pandorers box” that’s why this is a case where no one is speaking. Seems the only one that has come forth has been the grandfather whom doesn’t seem “attached” to anyone in that house and has nothing to loose. If Jeff Strelzin from NH were overseeing this “disappearance” of this baby …. the fur would be flying. C’mon Maine DA …. you know what you have to do. You DO NOT NEED A BODY TO DO IT.
Yes, but it’s a risk without a body. If nothing came of an arrest now there would be a hell of a difficulty re-arresting them if a body was then found without a huge mountain of evidence.
It is so sad that this cute little girl is still not found! I have been watching the news that has been covering this story since it first broke locally and on a national level. It is quite obvious that everybody has figured out how she got a broken arm. Each and every time a vigil is held her father is front and center releasing balloons, and holding candles. One of the very first conferences Mr. DePitro and every one there after I have never seen him shed one tear! If my child was missing I would be an emotional wreck. And who does not check on their children one time after they went to bed until late in the morning. I went in my children’s room all the time at nap time and several times in the night. I did not see the mother shed to many for that matter. There was blood found in the basement where the father, his girlfriend slept. In this case it seems fitting we should be a state like texas and put in an express lane in our correctional institution.
I’ve heard he had a life insurance policy on his baby. Does he look the type that is into life insurance, especially on an infant? My husband and I have life insurance policies on one another, to replace income. It strikes me funny that a man who doesn’t own his own home, or hold down a full time job, would make life insurance for an infant a priority. Its going to be hard to find 12 jurors here.
If they find her, I hope there is enough evidence to nail the person who did it.
Start looking in Portland! That’s where they came from before moving to Waterville
Have they checked local land fills I know it’s an awful thing to say, but that’s were alot of the cold cases on tv end up.
Hope the cops find her killer quicker than they have Darrel Smiths.
You know someone from the family is reading this and this is for them: shame on you. You are protecting a grown adult who is capable of making their own choices, when the real person that deserves protection is this little girl. Nobody is going to judge you for what someone else did but you forever have to live with knowing that while you kept silent, this little girl wasted away somewhere cold and alone all winter. I hope you reconsider doing the right thing. Ayla is a beautiful little girl that was born into the wrong life and hiding the truth takes away the only dignity this child stood a chance at having her whole life. The longer you are silent, the worse this will surely become for you. Don’t you love her at all? How could you not? Why do the residents of the state of Maine care more about this baby than you?
That’s alot of credit. One would have to have enough knowledge to be able to read. That said. If they did have knowledge one would hope they wouldn’t go near any sites like this. I know I wouldn’t, who would want to read this kind of stuff if you were involved?
The people to blame almost always follow up to see where things are headed.
We know where “one” to blame is headed very shortly. Those that don’t come forward and plea bargain out ASAP will certainly go to getting the same amount of time or very close to it. If I was involved, I’d be getting myself a lawyer and cut a deal with the prosecutor, to turn over evidence in exchange for my own freedom. Knowing and keeping a secret can get you alot of time.
all i can say is ,”how sad”!
after reading the comments i have to ask, how do we know she’s deceased?? is there any suspicion that she’s been placed somewhere, in someone’s care, to keep her from her mother? the thought has crossed my mind… more than once…
how does a person just vanish into thin air by now some one would of called in syaing they saw something. you cant tell me that the dad and girl friend are that ……… to be able to hide a body . I still wonder if she isnt being hidden by some one. Alive that is. Usually by now a body comes up, well unless it is the same people who were looking for the missing man from 2004.
I hope that if someone is found knowing what happened this whole time and was hiding it that they have to pay back every penny it cost the state of Maine for this investigation.
Spring is here, and soon to be a lot of outside activities and drinking along with it.. Am hoping someone will spill the beans. Is easy to hide in the winter in the house, but Spring and Summer, they will be out walking about with hopefully an opened beer, and a mouth to match.. Time has passed and their self confidence is up, maybe time to brag a bit about how they are getting over on the cops… There is always a slip up, and always someone to catch it.. They have to be confiding in someone, would be hard to keep all this to ones self.
We’re just going to keep trying. We’re not going to give up, that’s for sure.”
