The attorney for George Zimmerman, the man who shot and killed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin last month, said Monday that Martin initiated the confrontation, beating his client so badly he suffered a broken nose and injuries to the back of his head.

Physical evidence, including a grass stain on the back of Zimmerman’s shirt, showed there was a scuffle, lawyer Craig Sonner told ABC News. “When the evidence comes out, it will show that George Zimmerman was acting in self-defense in this case,” Sonner said. “It’s not a racial issue.”

Martin’s parents and their attorney, preparing to fly to Washington for a congressional briefing Tuesday, disputed the account, which contradicted their long-standing assertions that Zimmerman had attacked their son without provocation. Martin was unarmed when he encountered Zimmerman while walking from a convenience store in Sanford, Fla., on Feb. 26.

“There is absolutely no evidence of anything like that except Zimmerman’s word,” Benjamin Crump, the attorney for Martin’s parents, said in an interview. “Trayvon isn’t here to give you his version because Zimmerman shot and killed him.”

Sonner’s account of Zimmerman’s injuries is consistent with the Sanford Police Department report, written by the officer at the crime scene who handcuffed Zimmerman. “I could observe his back appeared to be wet and was covered in grass, as if he had been laying on his back on the ground,” the officer wrote. “Zimmerman was also bleeding from the nose and back of his head.”

When Zimmerman was placed in the back of the squad car and given first aid, the officer heard him say, “I was yelling for someone to help me, but no one would help me,” according to the police report.

On at least one of the eight taped 911 calls made to police, screams can be heard in the background. Martin’s parents believe it is their son screaming for help. But a friend of Zimmerman’s said on television Monday that he believed it was Zimmerman’s voice in the background.

A federal law enforcement official involved in the investigation said that Zimmerman told authorities he was returning to his sport-utility vehicle after calling police when Martin confronted him.

The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the investigation is in its early stages, said that Zimmerman recounted Martin challenging him by saying, “You got a problem with me?”

“Zimmerman said no,” the official said, citing Zimmerman’s account. “Martin said, ‘Now you do,’ and then punched him in the nose.” The exchange was first reported by the Orlando Sentinel, which also said Zimmerman had told police that Martin got on top of Zimmerman and began slamming his head into the sidewalk.

New information was also revealed Monday about the circumstances of Martin’s visit with his father in Sanford. Crump said that Martin was staying with his father’s fiancee because he had been recently suspended for 10 days from his high school in Miami after an empty baggie that once held marijuana and still had some residue was found in Trayvon’s book bag.

“They found he and his friends with a baggie,” Crump said.”They wouldn’t tell whose bag it was,” Crump said. “So Trayvon and a friend were suspended.”

Crump said the suspension was “completely irrelevant” to the shooting. “It has no bearing whatsoever,” he said.

Sybrina Fulton, Martin’s mother, said the story about his suspension was leaked by the police to smear her son’s reputation.

Sanford City Manager Norton N. Bonaparte Jr. said that the information in the Orlando Sentinel had not been provided to the media through an authorized police source and was possibly a leak in the department. But, he said, the account in the newspaper was “consistent with the information provided to the State Attorney’s Office by the police department.”

Martin’s shooting has sparked a national outcry over racial profiling, with the family’s supporters demanding that police arrest Zimmerman, who has not commented publicly on the case and who remains in seclusion.

Fulton and her ex-husband, Tracy Martin, Trayvon’s father, will attend a congressional briefing Tuesday afternoon on racial profiling and state “stand your ground” laws with several Democratic representatives, including Sheila Jackson Lee (Texas), John Conyers (Mich.) and Corrine Brown (Fla.).

Twenty-one such laws have been passed in the United States in recent years. Sanford authorities cited Florida’s “stand your ground” law as the reason Zimmerman has not been arrested.

“When the Sanford Police Department arrived at the scene of the incident, Mr. Zimmerman provided a statement claiming he acted in self-defense, which at the time was supported by physical evidence and testimony,” Bonaparte said in a statement last week.

“By Florida Statute, law enforcement was PROHIBITED from making an arrest based on the facts and circumstances they had at the time,” Bonaparte wrote in the statement, citing statutes including Florida’s “stand your ground” law.

The Florida law, which was the first such measure passed in the country, was signed in 2005. It was backed by the National Rifle Association and opposed by police officials, who feared it would encourage untrained vigilantes to take the law into their own hands.

John F. Timoney, a former Miami police chief and former head of the Police Executive Research Forum, said he and other Florida police chiefs wrote to the Florida legislature in 2005 opposing the “stand your ground” concept.

“Laws like ‘stand your ground’ give citizens unfettered power and discretion with no accountability,” Timoney wrote in an opinion piece in the New York Times last weekend. “It is a recipe for disaster.”

In Florida, the “stand your ground” law specifically gives citizens the right to use force — even deadly force — in a public space if they feel threatened. Under the Florida statute, a person “who is attacked in any other place where he or she has a right to be has no duty to retreat and the right to stand his or her ground and meet force with force.”

While most of the laws were passed by Republican-controlled states, such as Pennsylvania, not all were. Oklahoma’s Democratic governor signed a “stand your ground” law. President Barack Obama’s Homeland Security secretary, Janet Napolitano, signed such a law when she was the Democratic governor of Arizona.

  1. Ahhh , the TRUTH is now coming out…Not that it will matter much to the race baiters and their liberal enablers in the press and elsewhere..The TRUTH will be called hate speech I’m sure…

    1. The truth is that the police specifically told Zimmerman NOT to pursue Martin and he did it anyway, which puts him in the position of being the agressor. As far as what took place during a scuffle we only have Zimmerman’s account because the young man is dead. One thing you can take to the bank is the fact that if it was George Zimmerman  lying face down in the dirt Trayvon Martin would have been arrested immediately. I believe the facts will come out and people will now take a look at some of these so called Stand your Ground laws and the problems they are causing.

      1. So you want to turn this into a race issue, as the parents do, yet Zimmerman has black friends and neighbors vouching for him.
As much as anyone wants to try not to racial profile, it is a fact of life in the world we have made for ourselves. Anyone aware of the crime statistics is going to be more aware of a black teenager in their vicinity, whether you are black or white. It’s no different than getting on an aircraft and having a couple Muslims board the plane and start praying to Allah. Would that concern you? If it would, then you are racial profiling, if not then you are naive.

    2. So the attorney for the shooter comes out and says that it was his client, you know the one armed with the gun, that was attacked by the guy with the skittles and cell phone and you scream that it is the TRUTH.

      1. He didn’t draw his weapon until Martin was beating his head into the pavement. Martin would not have known he was armed…but I bet he was surprised.

  2. Martin was “standing his ground” against a man running after him.  Zimmerman probably brandished the gun giving Martin further reason to fear for his life and protect himself.  The whole thing comes down to Zimmerman pursuing Martin because he had a cop fantasy and he needs to be arrested for murder.

    1. Maybe you should wait until after the investigation. To date, according to this story and recent news broadcasts, you are full of it. All evidence at this point indicates that Zimmerman was on the ground with Martin on top of him when he drew his weapon and fired.
Exactly where are you getting all this race BS? The parents? Well, what else would they say? The officers did exactly what they were allowed to do under the law.

    2. Sounds like the truth is that Zimmerman did not have his gun out and Martin attacked him thinking he could beat the cr*p out of  Zimmerman and get away with it.

I don’t care if Martin was black, brown , yellow, or purple.  Being out walking at 3:00 AM in the morning in a gated community is suspicious and I am willing to bet any police who saw him would have stopped and questioned him as well.

In the 80’s I was one of 4 people walking between two hotels in a distant suburb of Chicago.  About 10:30 at night in what we thought was a good neighborhood.  Police pulled up and questioned us.  Then warned us that the area was not really safe to walk in at night, not even the 300 yards between hotels, and to stay in our group of 4.

    3. pity you think those are thoughts…. those too are fantasy.

and I do like your liberal use of damning verbs like brandishing and “running after”….well played.

and you are part right.  Martin had every right in the world to stand his ground, assuming he was not trespassing (and I am not saying he was), but he had no right to swing first or to continue beating Zimmerman’s head once Zimmerman was subdued…. learn the law and get out of Maine a little.  You will see that it is never as simple as the way the news media makes it out to be.  Remember their only reason for being is to sell ads.

  3. if Zimmerman hadn’t pursued Trayvon for no legitimate reason none of this would have happened. Period!

    1. that is right, and if there were no neighborhood watch, then there would be infinitely more crimes at night in that neighborhood.
do me a favor, post YOUR home address, let us all know when you are sleeping or least likely to hear an intruder and post whether or not YOU own a gun or whether any of your immediate neighbors do.
Until you are willing to put yourself at risk, don’t blame Zimmerman for simply following someone in his neighborhood.

      1. listen I am all for neighborhood watches, my family HAS been victimized already and I am overly vigilant, armed and ready. I understand why people want to protect their communities more than most of the people posting here. All I am saying is that if Zimmerman had waited for the cops to show up this wouldn’t have happened. It’s a sad situation no matter how you look at it.

    2. BS. The story says that he was returning to his vehicle after speaking with dispatch, and was attacked. So he legitimately reported what appeared to be a suspicious individual. Neighborhood watch programs have reduced crime all over the country if you bother to look into it.
Also, it doesn’t appear that Martin is as squeaky clean as some people would like everyone to believe, since he had a 10 day suspension from school.
Obama should not be commenting on any case that is actively under investigation either. If the investigation turns out the way it’s looking, he owes Zimmerman a minimum of a phone call and apology.

      1. news is also leaking that just before being suspended, he punched a bus driver, for no reason.
        good kid

        1. He was not shot for being suspended, he was shot for attacking someone that he obviously didn’t realize was armed. The suspension just shows the character of the individual.

      2. The press keeps using photos showing the kid 12 years old..He was not…He was 6′ 4″ and 17 years old..Martin was constantly in trouble at school…Carrying womans jewelry and burglary tools , spraying graffitti on school lockers , drugs , and according to a Tweet from his cousin he also attacked a bus driver once..Zimmereman shot the MAN in the chest at very close range while he was having his head bashed into the ground..He also had a broken nose and a nasty gash on the back of his head …Those are the FACTS and more is coming out all the time….Why is the BDN hiding this story down in the corner in small print now that the FACTS are coming out ?? Hmmmm…I think I know why…SHAMEFULL…

        1. but here’s the thing, Zimmerman didn’t know any of this and now a young man is dead, his voice silenced and everyone here trying to villify him, blaming him for his own death is absolutely appalling.

    1. no you are wrong.
Dispatch told him that he did not NEED to follow Martin
      Dispatch is not police.
and for crying out loud, WHAT do you think would have happened if dispatch had said ANYTHING but?
Both sides would be suing the city.
you DO know that the police did a half day investigation, questioning and examining Zimmerman and a witness.  You also know that they get badges and honors for convicting a murderer AND a perpetrator of a hate crime?

You also know that whenever the police have ENOUGH evidence or allegations to make an arrest, they do it and then let the courts sort things out, right?

last.  This was in Zimmermans’ neighborhood.  THere was a reason that the neighborhood watch felt that it was necessary to keep a look out at 3am.

but apparently facts and reason do no matter to most of the US population, we just feel a need to play the race card once again.   (dam jewish mexicans always holding down the bruthaas)

  4. Zimmerman, is giving all weapon permit carries a bad name, he pursued, that is not a stand your ground argument, why did Zimmerman get out of his car where he was safe, and follow and watch where the teenager went and let the police handle it.  When he was told to stand down he should have PERIOD.

All this race stuff is just plain BS, where was sharpton, jackson, and the black panthers on the weekend of St. Patrick’s Day in Chicago, when the 6 year old girl was shot and killed, ABSENT, why because the girl was black and the shooter(gang shooting) was black.
