PORTLAND, Maine — A Maine man who was wounded in a shootout with U.S. marshals and made the news again by circumventing jail security to have a tryst with a female inmate has pleaded guilty.

Arien L’Italien of Biddeford pleaded guilty Monday to assaulting a federal officer, being a felon in possession of a gun and using a firearm during a crime of violence. Under an agreement, prosecutors dropped an attempted murder charge. No sentencing date has been set.

Officials say the 22-year-old fired four shots at U.S. marshals who tried to arrest him in January in Portland. One of them returned fire, hitting him in the leg.

His tryst with a female inmate on March 9 led to his transfer from the Cumberland County Jail and an internal review by jail officials.

  1. “U. S. Marshall…. returned fire, hitting him in the leg.”

The Marshall needed to raise his sights…

  2. I know it’s all about stats and convictions for the ADA but I’d think they had a solid case with him shooting directly at federal agents.  This dirtbag needs to go away for life not 2-3 years or whatever he’ll get with these convictions.  Maine ADA’s are pleading out cases like crazy giving easy sentences to career criminals.

    1. Federal case, prosecuted by a United States District Attorney working for the US Department of Justice. This man will be sentenced according to guidelines set forth by  the US Sentencing Commission. He will be going to Federal Prison.
