CARIBOU – Vernon P. Leavitt, 94, passed away Sunday, March 25, 2012, with his family by his side at a Fort Kent hospital. Vernon was born Oct. 6, 1917, in Limestone, son of Roscoe B. and Bessie (Ward) Leavitt.

Vernon was married to Emma (Martin) Leavitt for 53 years until she passed away in 1994. Vernon was a member of Caribou Veterans of Foreign Wars, and served our country with pride as first lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He underwent combat training on Pt-19s, B-13s and B-26s. It was during that time he was promoted to second lieutenant. After his training, he and his crew were sent to Savannah, Ga., to pick up a new B-26 and later flew to Europe. Vernon, with his crewmembers endured 35 missions from England, France and Belgium. He was promoted to first lieutenant and discharged in July 1945. After his military service he worked for 38 years at Loring Air Force Base operating heavy equipment.

Vernon is survived by his children, Barbara Lunn Leavitt, Thomas Leavitt and his wife, Shirley, Cheryl Leavitt, and Dora Leavitt; grandchildren, Lance Lunn, Jared Lunn, Anne Helton and her husband, Donald, Susan Shaw, Renee Leavitt, and Robin Berube and her husband, Mike. In addition, he leaves behind 11 great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Emma and his parents, Vernon was predeceased by his siblings, Jim, Ward, Gerald, Keith, Orman, Dora, Gertrude and Margarette.

Friends and family may call 6-8 p.m. Thursday, March 29, at Lancaster Morgan Funeral Home, 11 Clover St., Caribou, where a memorial service will begin 8 p.m. with the Rev. Ellen Cleaves officiating.
