BANGOR, Maine — After nearly three decades on the beat, Bangor police Sgt. Allen Hayden has decided to retire.

His colleagues at the Bangor Police Department will bid him farewell during an official retirement coffee reception at the station Thursday morning, Sgt. Paul Edwards said Wednesday in a news release.

According to Edwards, Hayden began his career in law enforcement in 1984 with the Skowhegan Police Department.

In April of 1987, Hayden joined the ranks of the Bangor Police Department, where he remained ever since.

After a brief stint as a patrol officer, Hayden in 1990 became involved with establishing the department’s Special Response Team, which still exists today.

“His work to help establish the team will always be a testament to his dedication in making the Bangor Police Department a unique and self-sustaining department that provided our officers with certified training techniques in tactical areas in order to respond much quicker to volatile situations,” Edwards noted.

Hayden also became a K-9 handler in 1988, a specialty he continued with until about 1992, when he was tapped to serve as the department’s training officer. In that capacity, Hayden taught firearms and defensive tactics not only to officers in his own department but also to cadets at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy.

In 1994, he went back to patrol while continuing to represent the K-9 division until March 2003, when he was promoted to the rank of sergeant.

At that time, Hayden became a certified K-9 trainer. As such, he managed the program in his department and trained personnel in other area departments until his retirement.

“Hayden, a very big man in stature, will always be remembered as the gentle giant of the department,” Edwards said, adding, “Hayden will enjoy retirement with his wife Annette in Bangor and plans to build a hunting camp in the very near future.”

  1. Alan is a great man and did a fine job. I hope he gets many years of enjoyment of  his retirement. Very kind and easy going  man. Thanks for all you did to keep Bangor Streets safe. From all the employee’s at the Bangor Public Works Department.

  2. Two cops in a month retiring, not common for a force.  At least i dont think it is, wonder why they decided all of a suddent to retire

    1. This man is a decent man with high values. If could be a conflict of interest  . It is not a perfect world. It must be hard to be a police officer when you have to deal with politics and sometimes are not allowed to do what you feel Is the right think to do .

      1. Two retired, but also three that i know of have resigned since the new chief took over.  Just curious to why this is happening, yes the two retired are old and deserve it

        1. Gastia always seemed like a straight shooter way back when I used to know him . I think that position has too many politics involved. Sometimes it is not so clear where the law stands on many things . I think it depends on more who you are than what you did.

    2. Check out how many state employees retired when State Government started messing with the retirement system. It’s probaly just time for this good man, but lot’s of public employees across the country are going while the going is good.

  3.  When Bangor voter and taxpayers learn to distinguish between crime solving and law
enforcement they will have begun the journey towards becoming smart criminal justice consumers.
Every person reading this post will have been born into a society where they had no say in how our laws are enforced and who gets to solve crimes.
The tough questions never get asked like :
Does our current law enforcement model create more disorder than the order it brings?
What are the consequences to me when I hire bodyguards to protect me?
What does it cost me as a taxpayer for a cop to make 1 arrest”
How many crimes go unsolved in Bangor each day?Month?Year?
    How many crimes go unreported?
What kinds of crimes are being committed by cops that lead to crimes committed against taxpayers and citizens of Bangor. i.e Are cops bringing drugs into Bangor?
What kind of big ticket crimes has law enforcement been caught committing. i.e evidence now shows
FBI  agents, and Local law enforcement were involved in creating and covering up the President Kennedy assassination , Martin Luther King asssassination, voter fraud, the 1993 1st World Trade Center bombing, Oklahoma City bombing and 911.
This is just a partial list of questions.
I am sure once you get used to asking questions you can come up with better ones.
This just in from the Bangor whisper stream….

    1. Just put more tinfoil on your hat and put used coffee grinds in each corner of your room and it will keep the demons away.  No, really you are not paranoid or delusional, really.

      1.  Whooaa! all caps for lighten up.
        What’s the emphasis for?
Any time someone suggests we study Bangor law enforcement
        the twitching starts.
But the people who should be twitching, the Maine voter and taxpayer,
want to know did Officer Hayden ever create a Special Response Team to deal with the perps at Goldman Sachs or Bank of America?
Folks, the inmates are running the asylum, eh?
