AUGUSTA, Maine — The Maine Democratic Party has dropped its challenge of petitions submitted by Republican Kevin Raye to appear on the primary ballot for the 2nd Congressional District on June 12.
Mary-Erin Casale, executive director of the Maine Democratic Party, said Wednesday that the challenge was dropped.
The party had found fault with 15 petitions, including the master petition that was filled out by a town official, potentially invalidating all of the 1,000-plus signatures submitted by Raye.
Kathleen Summers-Grice, Raye’s spokeswoman, described the challenge as “frivolous.”
She said Democrats dropped the challenge “to spare themselves the public humiliation of having no case to present” at a hearing scheduled for Wednesday.

Republicans would know what that humiliation is like after their same-day registration legislation was vetoed because of their own baseless fraud claims.
Just like the Democrats were humiliated when their soda tax and increase in things requiring sales tax bills were overturned by the peoples veto? Or perhaps when gay marriage was overturned by popular vote?
What this really boils down to is nothing more than school yard antics that both parties have become very fond of these days.
I was simply commenting on the ridiculousness of the spokeswoman’s comment.
bunch of kids .
The Republicans in Washington County have controlled the political scene there for over 30 years. Here is just one more example of how, with all that power, they no longer feel the need to follow the rules, much like their politically motivated cancellation of the recent caucus.
Yet, with all the control they wield, they have not managed to improve conditions there, except for the small group that always seems to benefit from their “initiatives.”
The more candidates there are, the worse they will beat each other up, and the better for the other party. It’s just political parties…. who cares?
Good job you nice demmies. Of course, it never should have been challenged in the first place.
Neither should the affordable health care act.
you mean the part where NOBAMA becomes a dictator
While we are no fans of Geminis, Knowitall, it sure seems like you could benefit from reading the Hon. Olympia Snowe’s monograph on why she decided not to run for re-election — unless you revel in your ignorance and embracement of Fox “News.” Name-calling contributes neither to our great Democracy or to our attempts at civil disagreement.
Fox News watchers are more intelligent and better informed than their msnbc counterparts. No joke.
Why should it never have been challenged? Does it make a difference if it’s 1,000 questionable petitions or five? Don’t you think our elected representatives are looking out for their constituents, whether or not they’re of the same political party? The law is the law — whether it’s one transgressor or 1,000.
Why stop the process just because the Democrats agreed to some type of inside deal? What about all the independents and unbiased voters who demand accountability from officials responsible for enforcing rules? Whatever commission is responsible for compliance in this matter should make a decision based on their rules and standards since a possible error has been publicly revealed. Either it is right or wrong and should not depend on major party winks which characterize so many decisions from the “establishment”.
The petitions were accepted and the DEMS challenged them and now they dropped their challenged. The process is over.
Um…you missed the deadline to exercise that right. Sorry about that. Better luck next time.
School yard antics and we pay these people for this type of Leadership.
Maybe the Dems. got their point across by starting to sling mud early. Some kind of ploy?
Silly suit, anyway, and this kind of event will take place now through election day!
Do the Democrats have any idea how foolish and childlike they look, running around shouting accusations with no basis in fact?

You mean they look as ridiculous as the republicans claim of voter fraud? Or drug testing welfare recipients?
Between this and the shady shenanigans perpetuated by the GOP regarding all the caucuses, I’m totally fed up with both parties. Time to get rid of them all and start fresh.
Wise move, Democratic leadership. Let Kevin fail on his own ineptitude and conniving, even though yes, his fledgling campaign screwed up. We Mainers smell a skunk when we smell a skunk.
I wish Raye would either push his glasses up on his nose where they belong or take them off, it looks ridulous
Raye has already gone as far as he will ever get State Senate President!!
