SCARBOROUGH, Maine — A Scarborough teenager and his mother are asking for the return of his stolen wheelchair, no questions asked.
Chris Fitzgerald relies on the wheelchair to travel the quarter-mile from the school bus stop to his home every day because he can’t walk that far.
His mom sometimes leaves it at the end of the neighbor’s driveway near the bus stop on days when she works late.
Last week when Chris got off the bus, it wasn’t there. They think it was stolen.
His mom says her “jaw dropped.”
Chris tells WCSH-TV he’s baffled because the wheelchair was custom built for him so it’s useless for anyone else.
Anyone with any information on the wheelchair can call the Scarborough police.
Last week, an elderly man’s electric wheelchair was stolen from under his bedroom window in Lewiston. Police later recovered the wheelchair.

what lowlife would steal a wheelchair , i mean come on.
It doesn’t mean it was necessarily stolen. A lot of junk dealers drive around the state looking for stuff that people threw away on the curb. They ‘might’ have thought that they were throwing the wheel chair away.
Regardless of it maybe being at the curb, if someone didn’t ask if it was being thrown away and just took it, that means they stole it.
Just because you use the word “technically” doesn’t make it true. ha ha Just because you have a “Subjective” feeling on a subject doesn’t mean that it is scientifically “Objective”. Mainers tend to have a hard time with logic but are great at rationalizing.
Not again!?!
Somebody doesnt want to pay these high gas prices..
SHAMEFUL!
I’m guessing that it wasn’t stolen so much as someone saw it on the side of the curb and thought it was being thrown out. Where I live in Bangor if anyone wants to get rid of something like a chair, old bike, bookshelf, etc they set it out on the curb and usually within minutes someone pulls over and takes it. I mean who leaves a wheel chair in the street? I’m guessing that who ever took it didn’t know it was being left for someone. But now that the news and everyone makes it seem like a theft the person who took it is probably too embarrassed to return it. Usually junk sales-persons collect stuff to sell on Craigs List. Then again some foolish teens might have stole it for fun. But my first guess is that some honest person thought it was just junk on the side of the road. I’m not saying it’s not an unfortunate thing. I feel bad for the guy who lost his wheelchair but that’s what you get for leaving stuff unattended in the street.
You know, these days if you don’t want something taken, you need to lock it up. And yes, leaving something at the end of a driveway looks like it is no longer wanted, as that is where most of us leave our garbage to be picked up.
You are correct. The wheelchair is being returned by a woman who thought it was set out there for the taking. She called the police as soon as she heard the story. Heard this update on the TV around 11am..
A happy ending to this story.
It’s so sad that people always rationalize things like this as stealing or thievery rather than being logical. I mean, I didn’t believe 100% one way or the other. I was trying to offer a possible solution for why it was missing. Too many people “Subjectively” speculate and then use those un-scientific speculations to make further judgements on the situation. It pays to try and be more “Objective” and think of all possible sides. Rationalizing isn’t always the right thing to do specially when people let their emotions rule their heads. Which too many people do these days. Im glad to see that my “guess” was right but it was more of an “educated guess” based on what people are more likely to do “statistically speaking” based on what my experiences are with such matters. But even then I didn’t believe 100% either way. It just seem more likely the Logical conclusion.
