BANGOR, Maine — A Bangor woman displayed real heroism Wednesday when she was sliced by a box cutter while defending a girlfriend being threatened by an ex-boyfriend, according to Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards.
“She hit him a couple of times,” Edwards said Thursday. “She got him good, but she paid for it.”
William R. Cocci, 32, of Bangor swung at her with the box cutter, the sergeant said Thursday.
Luckily, the 26-year-old Bangor woman was just “nicked in the face,” Edwards said.
Cocci’s ex-girlfriend is a 32-year-old Brewer woman.
Several people reportedly saw Cocci threatening the women with the knife on Hammond Street and called police about 8:45 a.m. Wednesday.
He was found with the weapon in his bloody hands walking down the city street shortly afterward by Officer Kevin Haefele, Edwards said.
Cocci was charged with three felonies — aggravated assault, criminal threatening and domestic violence assault — as well as with stalking and violating his probation.
“He was attempting, reportedly, to use some sort of GPS to track her down,” Edwards said, referring to the ex-girlfriend. “The word on the street was that he was going to cut her up.”
Cocci reportedly assaulted his then-girlfriend last week, after which she broke up with him and left to stay with a girlfriend, the sergeant said.
His ex just happened to be out Wednesday morning with her Bangor friend, who was walking her dog, when Cocci approached them and the physical confrontation took place.
Cocci was treated for a cut over his left eye, apparently caused by the Bangor woman hitting him, and was taken to a local hospital emergency room for treatment, Edwards said.
Haefele was treated for blood exposure.
After Cocci was medically cleared at the hospital, he was arrested and taken to the Penobscot County Jail. He will be held without bail at least until Friday, when he will see a judge for his first court appearance on the five charges, a jail official said.

Suppose hes gonna tell the other inmates the real reason he is beat up? I bet he says ” You should see the other guy”
Go Bangor woman! You’re a true friend. Even with a weapon, he still got injured. Pansy.
Though I agree with you that women should stand up for themselves I can safely say that there are a lot of bad women (as well as men) in the Bangor area.
And they say that a woman cannot fight. right! LOL
I guarantee every woman in the world could kick my butt, because i’de never strike back. But I think I can outrun most of ’em.
Now that is a real man!
I train with a few women in my Krav Maga (Israeli reality based self defense) class I take that can punch, kick and knee better than most men! They can disarm a knife well too! Viscous lol.
Awesome!
That’s a good friend to stand up to a guy with a box cutter defending her friend and good for the ex girlfriend to get out of that relationship. So glad nobody was seriously hurt.
I bet thier is more to the story. Interesting. This guy needs to grow up. Lucky he did not kill someone.
like what? HE was stalking her — HE is an abuser–he broke probation– he is a loser–He met his match and got beat down by a chick. Best story ever.
must have wanted her to look more like him in the face. what a wooos to go after a girl with a knife or anything for that matter… no wonder she broke up
Courage and allegiance to the golden rule in the face of real evil and danger still bless the community. Our best days as a people are still before us if this is what still resides in the hearts of such people..
funny thing he got arrested few weeks ago for trying to pay somone to slap another women
nov.10th he was placed on a probation hold for pills……WHY is he out ? P.O.s must be getting SOFT ! And before anyone starts with the “p.o.s are soooo over worked how hard is it to stamp REVOKED on a piece of paper ?
You might want to get to the bottom of the real problem here. It isn’t by order of the P.O.’s…… you need to dig a little deeper than that. It isn’t even the judges…
What the P.O. reccomends the D.A. and the judge go with. ie…….P.O. says give him 14 day partial revocation …..D.A. says o k and the judge bangs his gavel…. there is NO digging to do. Have you ever had to deal with a P.O. ?
Goes a little higher than the DA now. They don’t want people in jail anymore. If you want that kind of justice, you need to move out of Maine, at least till we get rid of this Commissioner. Everything stupid that is happening is his doing. And, yes, I deal with P.O.’s every day.
….
I totally agree with you. but, when they do catch them doing something wrong, they bring it to the higher ups and they say, well, give them another chance. This needs to stop. They will eventually get away with murder. Its just like the police departments. They risk their lives catching these murderers, drug dealers, and bath salt freaks and they bring them in and they get a slap on the wrist and are sent back out on the streets. Why bother to catch them. Every time the little puke see’s that cop, he laughs at him as to say, I told you they wouldn’t do anything to me.
….
Well when you are working in a city like Bangor with such an enormous high percentage of it’s population doing illegal drugs it’s probably hard for P.O.’s to do a good job. I mean after cutting everyone out of my life from Bangor that I know do illegal drugs I basically have no friends left in Bangor. Most my friends are from away. You can throw a dart at a map of Bangor and either land on a building that has drug addicts in it or pedophiles. And before the bdn pulls this post down try googling for offenders in the Bangor area and you’ll clearly see I’m telling the truth. Also look at all the articles about Bangors drug crimes from Essex St. all the way over to Ohio St. and back again. I’d hate to be a P.O. in Bangor Maine. Heck I’m regretting just being a resident.
I wonder if it’s the same guy in the Monday section on this page…

same age/name and same type of crime. Why’s Maine importing such fine individuals? We need a big gate on the NH border.
Different age though..Also its Mass. not N.H.
But Maine borders New Hampshire.
so true…i wish i could freakin love this :)

Sounds like it could be his evil twin but this dude HAS been in the BDN recently.

Watch out, this may not be the end of the story!
Watch out, this may not be the end of the story! What rock do these miscreant men crawl out from under?
Not exactly a rock, but maybe Hampden’s Sawyer mountain?
Looks like those women and the Cops (and hopefully a curb) made an “impression” on him (or at least to the right side of his face). It appears they’ll have to hit him harder if they are trying to knock any sense into him……………………………..
Headline should’ve read “Woman nicked by box cutter while defending friend”
You go girl! More of these dudes need to be met with a woman who can defend herself and/or a friend. Maybe they’d think twice about doing it again.
winning
To bad she did not get the box cutter and use it on him, can you tell I don’t like these punks ?
Yet another instance where lead poisoning would be justified.
What a useless puke………..
the poor girl will have to look over her shoulder from now on because we all know he will be out with a slap on the wrist and a stern warning to have no contact.
Right…………….
so he’s a big man..likes to smack and control woman?..so glad she got a smack in..now will they keep him in jail?..or wait till he kills someone…just asking
So much drama in Bangor all the time. No wonder they call it the “Queen City”. ha ha
I like this mug shot better then his November one!
Why was this guy ever her boy friend?
I am very sorry she wasn’t packing.
Violence should be met with a long sentence…..should be
I’m not siding with the man with the box cutter but there seems to be something askew with the factual-events and that of the title and part of this article. I know this is a real bad man but I have a suspicion about the women’s motives involved as well. Believe me I’ve lived in Bangor a long long time (tooo long) and a lot of the women here are just as sketchy as the men they live with. What were they really fighting about? Who swung the first blow? What was actually said vs what was reported. Knowing Bangor they were all probably tweaking out over some drug issue that went wrong.
PS What is it with all these people in the news with knives, machetes, box cutters, and other sharp objects in Bangor?!?!
