BELFAST, Maine — A man who allegedly threatened his girlfriend with a homemade sword was arrested this week on several charges related to the incident.
James Ryan Witham, 31, of Belfast reportedly had gotten into a fight with the woman late Monday night. She called her uncle to come help, according to a Belfast Police Department report, and he said to call police.
Investigating officers said that Witham was uncooperative with police at first and refused to put down the 18-inch kitchen knife that was attached to a homemade handle. After police told him that if he didn’t put the knife down, they would use a Taser on him, Witham did comply, according to the report. He told police he was not using drugs, including the illegal hallucinogenic drug bath salts.
The woman told officers that Witham had punched her in the stomach and also had pulled out what she called the “sword” and was waving it around while threatening to kill her.
Witham, who has a lengthy history with police, also allegedly had trashed the inside of the trailer. There were children in the home at the time, according to police.
He was charged with criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, domestic violence assault and criminal mischief.
He was taken to Waldo County Jail in Belfast to be booked, with his bail set at $15,000 cash or $50,000 single surety. Witham remained in police custody Thursday morning but had been transferred to Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset, according to a jail official.
