DOVER-FOXCROFT, Maine — A missing Austrian man who has been visiting Maine and had last been seen on March 22 was located Thursday morning, a dispatcher from Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Office said.

“He has been found,” the dispatcher said. “He walked into a logging camp up on Telos Road.”

The sheriff’s department and the Maine Warden Service asked for the public’s help in finding Johannes Stummer, 25, on Wednesday after he had been missing for a week.

Stummer arrived in the United States around March 1 and spent time in Vermont and then Canada before coming to Maine on March 12. He had been staying in the Big Moose Township area since March 18, according to Piscataquis County sheriff’s Lt. Robert Young.

Stummer was reported missing Friday by the staff at Moose Mountain Inn in Greenville, where he had been staying, after he did not return to his lodgings, police said.

Police investigators were still interviewing Stummer Thursday morning, so details about where he has been for the last week were not available, the dispatcher said.

BDN reporter Dawn Gagnon contributed to this story.

  1. Excellent news, glad he his OK …………… I have a feeling that Mr. Stummer and his 650 bike may have had a lesson about dirt roads and mud season in Maine.

    1. siad he walked into a logging camp. Not sure about the bike. If he is up in that area, must of been quite an experience. Glad he is safe.

  2. Wow, up on the Telos Road….so glad the young man is safe.  It would be very interesting to hear about his adventures esp. being on a motorcycle.

  3. Glad he is safe. And well fed?
Always good grub at a logging camp.
I hope he stops in Eastport.
I’d love to hear his story.
Might need a translator though, cause I dont speak Austrian.

    1. I have to agree with you about hearing his story and I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised that he can speak English.

    2. Unlike  some Americans who only speak and understand English, quite a few Europeans are fluent in 2 or MORE languages.  They might not have all the idioms and slang, but can converse quite well in english.  The hard part is understanding the accent.  :)

  4. If his bike needed repair- any of Pelletier’s crew could have fixed it, they are pretty clever on TV.

  5. Wonderful news!  This old great grandma has been so worried about him.  Stay safe, now, Johannes, and enjoy the rest of your visit.

  6. He’ll have one heck of a story to tell back home. And he’ll be able to talk about the Maine hospitality. He didn’t just get lost in the woods with nobody watching his back.

  7. If he had ever watched an episode of the Pelletiers Tv show he  may have chosen to walk back to Greenville rather than ride on the Golden Road. Danny would have given him the smOOOOTH ride.
