MILLINOCKET, Maine — A Hampden-based businessman will see if he can secure for town residents some of the $1.4 million in housing rehabilitation money he says the state has.

Town Council members agreed to have Carlton Pinney continue the work he did last year for Millinocket handling funds from the federal Community Development Block Grant program, which is administered through Maine’s Department of Economic and Community Development.

Pinney said he is optimistic about the town’s chances but warns that money is tighter this year. Last year the state received about $2.3 million, but this year likely will get about $1.4 million, he said.

“There are four grants for the entire state. However, I think Millinocket is in a strong position [compared to other towns] because of the number of [local homeowners] on the waiting list,” Pinney said recently.

Last year the town received $250,000. The exact number of houses renovated was not available on Friday.

According to the proposal he gave the town, Pinney’s Northeast Housing Services has administered 17 grant programs since 1998 and rehabilitated or replaced more than 400 houses in more than a dozen communities.

The towns include Millinocket, Brooks, Burnham, Dexter, Exeter, Greenbush, Milford, Rockland and Waldo, among others, his proposal states.

Grant winner announcements are due later this year.

  1. Oh sure – we’d be happy to cut you another check – in fact, it may be time to issue Millinocket an EBT card.

    1. At what point in time will you grow up? At the end of the day how do you really feel about yourself? One word comes to mind after I read your comments, HELP!

      1. Someone has apparantly appointed themselves the position of BDN comment section police…someone needs to re-read the rules:

Keep it civil and stay on topicNo vulgarity, racial slurs, name-calling or personal attacks.People who harass others or joke about tragedies will be blocked.

        1. Keep it civil and stay on topic, do not use vulgarity, racial slurs, name calling and personal attacks! mlktmaine, if you follow the rules you will not have to worry about the comment section police!

        2. Hey mlktmaine, here is a small sample of your own comments,

“Amen to that!  25.6 mill rate in this podunk town?  Give me a break.  For what!!  The first to go should be Mr Decisiveness himself, Eugene C.  He’s the biggest drain on our town budget due to his inability to focus upon bringing positive development to this region no matter
what the source.  Eugene and his cronies serve to only further their misguided ideas.”

How is that for personal attacks?

          1. They’re not personal attacks..I’m not attacking Eugene personally rather I am expressing my opinion as the last time I checked I still live in the good ol US of A.  As for you, you are making it personal and are seeming quite confused as to what a personal attack constitutes on the BDN post.  Turn in your badge, gun and bullet Fife!

    2. Hey Bangorian-I just wonder how you feel when you can consider Hampden is getting $45 million Federal tax dollars for their school which is also not too far from the giant mountain of a dump that they have?

  2. $250,000 last year and they don’t know how many homes were renovated?????? This smells like Affordable Maine housing program. Lets take more of my hard earned money and give it to workers comp. slugs who can sit in a boat all day and fly fish. We are the fools who keep these programs going. Liberals want to give it away and expect the rest of us to keep paying so they can keep giving.
