OLD ORCHARD BEACH, Maine — Police are investigating an alleged embezzlement of funds from the Edith Belle Libby Memorial Library.

The Library’s Board of Trustees sent out a press release Wednesday evening stating that it had come to the attention of the board that there was a discrepancy in library funds.

The board’s president, Jerome Plante, said in a phone interview Thursday morning that he became aware of the alleged misappropriation of funds this week. An official from Saco & Biddeford Savings spoke to the town manager and the library director on Friday, and the board’s treasurer later went over the books, he said.

Plante said that it was “a considerable sum of money,” but did not give further details of the investigation. He did confirm that Linda Jenkins, who died Saturday, had been the library’s bookkeeper since 2006.

Deputy Police Chief Keith Babin declined to give any details about the case, but said police had been notified about the alleged embezzlement Wednesday and it was under investigation.
