AUGUSTA, Maine — The Maine Labor Department says the state’s unemployment rate was 7.1 percent in February, up slightly from January and down from 7.9 percent a year ago.
Labor Commissioner Robert Winglass said 50,100 people were without jobs during the month, down 5,200 from February 2011.
Maine’s jobless rate remains below the national rate, which was 8.3 percent for the month.
Cumberland County had Maine’s lowest seasonally unadjusted job rate at 6.3 percent. Washington County had the highest rate, 12.1 percent.

Fifty thousand must be the only ones actually Receiving “unenjoyment”. I am sure the actual total is a whole lot more than that figure says.
how about the ones that unemployment run out
I’l make a stab at unemployment numbers : 100% of those without jobs are unemployed. Now thats more accurate than the governments numbers.
Are all you dems asking the same questions when obama put outs the countries numbers, nope I hear see, obama’s plan is working, the numbers cam down, the economy is getting better. Now that its numbers for a Rep, oh lets look at all the numbers, give me a dam break. it should go both ways.
Some numbers came out yesterday. They’re in today’s news in places other than Fox.
Fox im reading the BDN, but you never hear the same argument when it comes to the National numbers, number are down so obama’s plans is working just ask MSNBC.
Maine is below the national average rate of unemployment for Febuary 2012 and nearly one point lower than the level of unemployment for Febuary 2011. Mad at LePage as unemployment hasnt gone down enough? Want to make those open for business jokes and comments? Well just remember what Obama has been telling us, “these things take time to get turned around”.
Maine’s unemployment was lower than the national average when lepage took office. He has really hasn’t done much of anything to spur economic growth. His minor achievements are offset by relegating maine to just another backwater state, open to the lowest bidder.
And Obama inherited high unemployment. He hasnt done a whole lot either to lower it, in my opinion.
If wasn’t for Obama we’d be back to a hunter gatherer society picking berries for subsistence.
I tend to think we are on that path thanks to him.
Nov. 6, 2012.
You realize that the governor is not up for election this year right? The national elections will be interesting though.
He is referring to the neutering of LePage’s majority. After this years election he expects the Democrats to take the House and Senate.
It should be interesting to say the least.
My favorite part, at least Nationally, is when a Republican Primary candidate who has been smearing and degrading the other candidate for 6 months bows out of the race and says. “You know that guy I been telling you for six months would be the worst President ever? Well I think you should vote for him.”
You mean Santorum? If you are implying that he was a joke then I agree with you.
No Republicans in the legislature, LePage has NO POWER to do anything. In fact, a lot of vetoes can be overridden.
Its nice to dream isnt it?
YUP ! Vote ALL Republicans out of office.
Wishful thinking. There was a reason for the way things went for the house and senate in 2010.
Thats what I was refering to with the “lot more”. Especially those older workers that were shut out, discriminated because of their age and have no chance of anything but a greeter at local Walmart if they are lucky.
probebly because peoples unemployment ran out ,not because of some mythical jump in company’s hiring.
Same goes for the National numbers
Many contributing factors.
1. Unemployment ran out.
2. Just flat out gave up!
3. Couldn’t afford the gas to go and sign up.
4. Starved to death.
5. Bush’s fault.
6. Slots (not implying the unemployed plays there but slots over the past few years have a good reputation for being blamed for everything is what I am implying)
What about the under employment rate? How high is that in Maine? How many thousands of Mainers are working for public assistance wages? How many pawns of big corporate America are the rest of us having to help support, because their under employers refuse to pay a living wage?
Where are the jobs, Governor?
Willing to bet if the numbers went up you dems would be calling LePage every name in the book.
Only ’cause we get to read the right wing nuts’ spin on why. And of course its fun to tick off the RWNs.
How many Mainers work partially or totally under the table?
Can you really blame anyone if they do work under the table? I know so many people with no health insurance, having a tooth pulled is a major catastrophe. God forbid if they needed major surgery, they would be paying $1 a month for the rest of their lives. The wages so many people receive, working for some of these big chains, is a joke when it comes to taking care of a family.
I don’t blame them at all. We’ve all paid folks to do various jobs for cash. From painting to yard work many Mainers pickup needed cash. It’s just skews the number for income.
LePage Lies ! Where are all the jobs you promised Maine, 15 months ago?
I got a crap job [why else would i be on here everyday?], The human resources at my company says there are about 140 applicants waiting to take my job.
My two kids, now adults, they live out of state, they have good jobs, they are happy, they come back to Maine to visit, in 3 hours they cant wait to get the h— out of this state.
I actually started planning on having them move out of state 10 years ago, i am so happy and glad i did. I saw this state going downhill that long ago. Dont get me wrong, it su-ked 10 years ago too
Well this is what happens when you people wish that there is no snow or cold weather
