EXETER, N.H. – Madeline Cushman Stuckey, 91, of 15 RiverWoods Drive and Castine, died peacefully March 21, 2012, surrounded by family at home. Madeline was born Aug. 28, 1920, in Winchester, Mass., daughter of Madeline (Porter) and Norman Locke Cushman.

She was educated at May School, Ogontz School and Smith College. Her summers were spent in Rye Beach, N.H. On May 8, 1943, Cush married Daniel Kemp Stuckey II and they began a 50-year odyssey that took them to Hebron Academy, Hebron; St. Paul’s School, Concord, N.H.; Bowdoin College, Brunswick; Phillips Exeter Academy, Exeter, N.H.; and finally into retirement in Naples, Fla., and Castine.

Madeline was predeceased by her beloved brothers, Gardner Cushman, in 1992, and Robert Cushman, in 2003; and her husband, in 1993. Since then she spent time in Naples, Fla., Castine and RiverWoods, Exeter, N.H., enjoying her family and friends. She is survived by her three sons and their families, Peter and Michelle, John and Jean, and Mark; grandchildren Jason, Sarah, Nicole, Natalie, Lisa and Gillian; and great-grandchildren, Tyler, Sam and Joey. The family thanks the staff and residents of RiverWoods at Exeter, who were so kind and caring of our mother, and who welcomed and nurtured us in her final days; to Beacon Hospice for their compassionate counsel; and to Dr. Joellen Thomas for her years of ministering to our mother.

In memory of Madeline’s respect and affection for her many friends, donations in lieu of flowers, may be made to RiverWoods Employee Appreciation Fund, care of RiverWoods at Exeter, 7 RiverWoods Drive, Exeter, NH 03833.
