KENDUSKEAG – Dorothy Arline Girvan, 95, passed away March 31, 2012, in Bangor. She was born March 15, 1917, in Bangor, daughter of Ray D. and Maude J. (Wright) Strickland.
She grew up on Essex Street, Bangor, and graduated from Bangor High School, class of 1935. She married Robert E. Girvan in 1936 and later moved to Kenduskeag, where they built and managed Kenduskeag Valley Golf Course for 20 years. For 30 years, they wintered in Naples, Fla., where they were members of Lakewood Country Club. She was an avid golfer and was very proud of her three holes-in-one. In her early years, she was chairman of the committee instrumental in starting and running the hot lunch program at Kenduskeag Grammar School, was secretary of Penobscot County Extension Service, as well as a 4-H leader and Cub Scout den mother. She was a life member of Good Samaritan Chapter No. 38, Order of the Eastern Star, Kenduskeag. Dot was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church of Bangor and in later years attended Corinth United Methodist Church. She also enjoyed cooking, oil painting, her vegetable and flower gardens, bird watching, card games, crossword puzzles and especially her bingo games at Ross Manor, which she continued playing until her passing, but most of all, spending time with her family and friends.
She is survived by four children, Margaret Berry and her husband, Edwin, of Hudson, William and his wife, Lois, of LaBelle, Fla., Mary Call and her husband, Harold, and Barbara Rozelle and her husband, Peter; son-in-law, Richard Greene; and daughter-in-law, Karen Girvan, all of Kenduskeag. Gram will be missed by her 10 grandchildren, Keith Patterson II and his wife, Ann, of Saco, John Patterson and his wife, Elizabeth, of Georgia, Kimberly Hikel and her husband, Peter, Michael Call and his wife, Tami, Audrey Greene, Bailey Girvan, and Jack Rozelle and his wife, Kayli, all of Kenduskeag, Robert Girvan III, Chad Rozelle and his friend, Kristi, all of Bangor and Valerie Fotter and her husband, Scott, of Corinna; and 10 great-grandchildren, Nicole and Michelle Patterson, Ashley Patterson, Kacy and Matt Hikel, Abby Call, Shauni Greene, Nicholas Maxwell, and Arianna and Nathan Fotter. She is also survived by a special sister, Mary L. Barry of Bangor; many nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Robert; daughter, Janet Greene; son, Robert E. Girvan II; son-in-law, Keith D. Patterson; siblings, Lawrence Strickland, Helen Strickland King, and twins, Robert and Richard Strickland. The Girvan family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Ross Manor for all their love and care.
