CORNVILLE, Maine — An Athens man was arrested early Saturday morning for drunken driving and traveling more than 90 mph, according to the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department.

Lawrence Holt, 44, was arrested about 12:30 a.m. Saturday on charges of criminal speeding, operating under the influence and operating while his license was suspended or revoked.

“I passed him on the road and he was driving erratically,” said Cpl. Mike Ross on Monday. “I turned around to pull him over and he took off at a high rate of speed. I ended up catching him a few miles up the road and he pulled over.”

Holt’s 1995 Oldsmobile Cutlass was traveling in excess of 90 mph in the 55-mph zone of Route 150, said Ross.

Ross said Holt may have panicked when Ross turned around, but Holt pulled over once Ross activated his lights.

“When I pulled him over, he didn’t have a license. It was suspended, and he was intoxicated,” said Ross, adding that Holt was cooperative.

Ross said the weather may have played a role in several OUI arrests over the weekend.

“Warm weather is bringing the people out of the woodwork, I would think,” said Ross. “I think it’s going to be a very long summer.”

    1. For the same reason that all the east coast cops and politicians are an O’something.  Tradition.  :)

  1. I agree, roadblocks aren’t very expensive to put in place. I’d rather have my tax money to have random roadblocks in place and deal with the inconvenience if I was in a rush. They definitely save lives. People who drink and drive aren’t bad people, they just make a not so smart decision.

    1.  And. On another not, if he had a suspended license he shouldn’t be driving anyways. If I was a cop and stopped somebody just trying to get to work but they had a suspended DL, I wouldn’t arrest them. But this guy CLEARLY has no right to be driving if he’s wasted and doing 90. The danger factor is off the charts in that situation. Kudos to the officer.

  2.      Why do you care about how tinted someones windows are? Or if there is a front plate or not? I mean, they sell vans and trucks with no rear windows at all, so why does it matter if someone wants a dark tinted rear? And sometimes the front plate is annoying, You buy a nice corvette or good looking car and you have to take part of the front off for a giant license plate, its not like there is a thousand corvettes driving around if someone calls you in.

    1. Change the law then nope…that’s tghe law and all those things that you mention as “annoying” also happen to be illegal. Perhaps you can run for state senate or representitive and change all these pesky little things called laws?
