  1. I think BDN employees should disclose all of their own salaries seeing as how much they love to publish everyone else’s.

    1. I think you would be quite surprised how little reporters make, besides there’s a big difference between the BDN (a private business) and the UM system ( taxpayers money).

  2. Anybody notice that quite a few of these folks actually moved into completely different jobs.  Those are generally handled through a competitive application process.   I am not sure that I would call those types of raises as discretionary.

      1. Shouldn’t you then change the title and content of your original story? This is sensational journalism at its best.  Might as well watch Fox News or MSNBC. Show me raises that people received for doing the same job, not promotions or different jobs.

  3. At least the BDN spells out why each person was given a raise unlike the Portland paper, that just gives a list of names and salary increases.

    Full disclosure:  I’m on the list.  After a two years of “campaigning” to get my position reclassified to reflect the work I was actually doing, I got that reclassification.  The resulting “raise” after taxes/after health premium increase is a mere $40 a month–enough to take my wife to dinner once a month.    I hope you don’t begrudge me to treating my wife out once a month and supporting a local restaurant.

  4. Half of these so called “raises” are job changes. If I am working to pay
    off debt as a janitor and I apply for and receive a position as a
    researcher, I did not receive a raise, I changed jobs and entered a
    higher paying profession. While there is some questionable spending at
    the University (which certainly needs to be addressed), this list (without context) and the accompanying article
    seem like hit jobs on an institution that does an enormous amount of
    good for the state of Maine.

The size of increases for top administrators, especially those closest to the people in power, is in sharp contrast to the lack of raises for most staff.  The reductions in staffing mean that most employees are expected to do a lot more work, but most employees have not seen increases.  I work for one of the universities, and the level of commitment to providing quality education is impressive. 

    I wish the list showed which employees are salaried, and which are
    hourly.  U Maine System staff who are paid hourly tend to be badly
    underpaid, and receive fewer benefits.  I’d have more tolerance for these raises, and more respect for these administrators, if they were doing more to provide better pay for everyone. 

  6. THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS. What a disgusting practice this is. I have never heard of papers doing such a thing. Is this the norm in Maine?
    A friend of mine linked me to this. She is one of the names listed…EXCEPT SHE DOESNT GET PAID BY THE STATE BUDGET. What a crock this story is.
