BANGOR, Maine — The Peace and Justice Center of Eastern Maine will hold a public rally Friday to support justice for Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teenager who was shot to death by a neighborhood watch volunteer in Sanford, Fla., last month.

“We’re inviting people to come bring signs, or just stand for justice,” said Ilze Petersons, the Peace and Justice Center’s program coordinator. “If they can wear hooded sweatshirts to show their solidarity, that would be great.”

The rally, which is scheduled for noon Friday at Peirce Park near the Bangor Public Library, was inspired by the University of Maine’s Black Student Union rally on campus Monday.

“One of the things said at that rally was an injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,” Petersons said. “I think many of us have had [the shooting] on our minds and felt the need to speak out, so once we saw the rally, it inspired us.

“It’s important to call for an investigation and an end to profiling that leads people to make assumptions about others based on their race,” she added.

There will be no keynote speaker at the rally, but attendees can take turns addressing the gathering.

  1. “It’s important to call for an investigation and an end to profiling that leads people to make assumptions about others based on their race.”

The race card. Don’t leave home without it.

    1. In this case I think the race card is correct.

If Trayvon had been a white teenager I doubt Zimmerman would have called him in to 911 and then followed him with a gun, let alone been son frightened by him to shot him.

If Trayvon had been white, I think the police would have taken more than 30 minutes to interview and then release Zimmerman with no charges.

If Trayvon had been white I doubt the police department would have waited 4 days to notify his family of his death.

      Do you?

  2. We do not yet know exactly what occurred yet.  I support JUSTICE for those involved but how can one who was not there and did not see with there eyes pick who is at fault?

    1. Paramedic reports does not list any treatment for injuries to Zimmerman and the police video show no obvious injuries nor blood on the clothing of Zimmerman and the autopsy shows no signs of a struggle, except for a gunshot wound to the chest, on Trayvon.  No defensive wounds or aggressive wounds like bruising of Trayvon’s knuckles or injuries that you would expect from using your hands to hit someone.

The voice on the 911 call was not the voice of Zimmerman but the voice of a young man yelling for help.

But even if Trayvon did defend himself from a stranger following him at night, what did he do that was 1.) illegal, especially with Florida’s Stand you Ground law and 2.) not what any male, young or old, would do but defend himself?

  3. Fake anger based on no facts, if you want to hold a Peace rally hold one for the 10 people killed in Chicago on St. Patrick’s Day including a 6 year old girl, where is their justice, their head lines, along with the other 39 that was shot on the same day.  maybe hold a rally for the 9 month old that was shot and killed in Detroit by a drive by shooting.  All because of an election year.

    1. How many of the perpetrators of those crimes were interviewed by the police department for 30 minutes and then released with no charges?

  4. I wonder if this group will remember the 50+ year old white man who is on life support in Seminole, FL, after being beaten by two black teens a week ago==  HMMMMMMMMMM

    1. Are those two black teens now free facing no charges in connection with their attack?

      Unlikely…….

Is there a whole segment of society that is blaming the 50+ year old white victim and defending the atteckers?

Is the 50+ year old past being investigated for anyting that might make him look bad?

Is there a fake photo of the 50+ year old man posing as a gang member?

I doubt it, but all of those things have been done and continue to be done to the victim, Trayvon.

  5. why are we even talking about this incident.  the investigation is still on-going, and yet the pretender-n-thief, the media and all of the bleeding heart liberals have already had a trial and found zimmerman guilty.   i ask you, where is the justice in this.

  6. Does anyone know if this organization has had rallys for incidents that happened here in Maine?
