WINDHAM, Maine — A Maine man is in hot water after setting off a terror scare when he was pulled over carrying more than a dozen propane tanks on a trailer behind his van.
Joshua Prokey of Westbrook was stopped Monday morning on River Road in Windham.
Officials became suspicious and blocked off the road because of the dangerous load and Prokey’s black van with tinted windows. Deputy Fire Chief David Nichols said in this day and age, the first thing that comes to mind is weapons of mass destruction.
A friend told reporters that Prokey was planning to use the 120-gallon tanks for flotation on a homemade pontoon boat.
Police said Prokey was later charged with theft by receiving stolen property when it was determined one of the tanks had been stolen.

See! All criminals have tinted windows!!!

out of all 12 tanks, they managed to find one was stolen, and since they made an Arse of themselves by pulling him over, they decided they better charge him with what they could and give themselves a pat on the back. Way to go!
Just imagine the bust if any had the old style valve on it?
“Deputy Fire Chief David Nichols said….the first thing that comes to mind is weapons of mass destruction.”
Wow, someone’s a little paranoid.
That’s funny , I was thinking wicked big BBQ.
O M G !! Youre kidding right ? The whole force AND the F,D. ? Take your grills out of the back of your truck when you go through there ! LOL
maybe they should outlaw tinted windows.
They are. Can’t be darker than 35%.
Well if they are 35% then they are way to dark. At least the ones around here.
Because it’s not enforced enough and the inspections stations don’t care.
I went and bought a couple of bags of fertilizer for the lawn on Saturday…..thank goodness they were out of sight in the trunk……btw, propane tanks for “flotation” devices on a homemade pontoon boat…..brilliant……..
If they’re empty and sealed, they float. I think it’s a pretty good idea.
Agree, they certainly float but far better things to use today than painted metal tanks in the waters…..
How did you find out you had ” deep_sneakers ” ?
WTH aren’t tinted windows illegal? I wouldn’t want to be a cop that had to walk up to the vehicle and can’t see inside.
Behind the driver I believe the windows can be darker.
Does anyone know right off hand how many tanks you are allowed to haul?? I haul two now and again, but if you have a camp way out in the woods and run propane you just might need to haul more then two at a time.
I believe it is 8 of the 100 lb tanks. We checked a year or so ago.
I stopped to take a picture of a crane in a stream in Bradley, before I even clicked the picture there was a sheriff pulling up, what r u doing, I got a call. The Old Town mill was across the river.
I would have thought it was the magic mystery van with Scooby and his pals
I stopped at a propane filling station to fill a tank for my Bar B-Q when some guy pulled in with 12-13 brand new 100lbs tanks in the back of his trailer. The thought of terrorism never crossed my mind but I did ask why so many as we waited our turns. Turned out he owned some remote sporting camps and thieves has cut all his copper lines and stolen the tanks. He was in the process of replacing them.
My guess is there is more to the story above that we won’t know but there has to be some sort of history there for the officers to take the time to inventory the tanks and determine one was stolen unless it had a clear ownership label.
Police are getting nervous now when they see their own shadow or maybe it’s just a way to get more Homeland Security monies.
You can haul more than that if you have a placard.
you gotta freakin be kidding me
i went to the store yesterday and bought two cans of propane lighter fluid
now i’m afraid someones gonna show up at the door
Good thing he wasn’t carrying them inside the van. He may have actually been able to complete the “float of mass destruction”.
BTW-I have few old ones kicking around he can have.
I wonder how BATMAN would have handled the situation….?
