GARDINER – Garth “Bill” Friel, who was born June 2, 1943, in Houlton, a son of William F. and Shirley Hotham Friel, passed away Monday, April 2, 2012, surrounded by his loving family in Augusta.

Bill graduated from high school in 1962 and served in the Army from 1964 to 1965.

In 1966 he moved to Connecticut and met the love of his life, Diane. Bill and Diane lived and worked there for 18 years and moved to Maine in 1984.

Bill is survived by his loving wife, Diane Greaves Friel of Gardiner; their three daughters, Pam and Anthony Cartonio of Gardiner, Janice Pompeo of Gorham and Sara and Darrin Russ of Standish; his sisters, Wilma and Art Hedberg of Florida, Gloria and Ray Britton of Monticello, Beverly Lint of Mars Hill, Eva Williams of Springvale and Cindy and Weldon Perkins of Florida; six beautiful grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. Bill was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Gale F. Jarvis; and by a daughter, Wendi. The family extends a special thank you to the doctors and nurses of Maine General Hospital.

An hour of visitation will be held 10-11 a.m. Friday, April 6, at Dolby and Dorr Funeral Chapel, 76 State St., Gorham, with a memorial service beginning 11 a.m. at the chapel.
