CASTINE, Maine — Three Maine Maritime Academy students are facing alcohol-related charges after police conducted an underage drinking detail at the school this past week.

According to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, the Hancock County Alcohol Enforcement Team was at the school checking on possible alcohol-related offenses on Wednesday, April 4, and Thursday, April 5.

One student, Matthew Methot, 22, of Portland, was arrested April 5 on a charge of violating conditions of release after police determined he had been consuming alcohol, the sheriff’s department indicated in a report summary.

Police indicated Methot had been prohibited from possessing or consuming alcohol after an incident that occurred on Dec. 9 of last year. In that incident, Methot was arrested on a charge of criminal trespassing after he got drunk and entered the wrong house in Castine, thinking it was his, police indicated.

Also on April 5, police arrested Jacob Wiser, 18, of Hampton Falls, N.H., on charges of furnishing liquor to a minor, illegal transportation of liquor by a minor and possession of false identification, according to the sheriff’s department. On April 4, police charged MMA student Ned Kaiser, 19, of Mattapoisett, Mass. with illegal transportation of liquor by a minor and possession of a false identification card.

  1. Why is this even BDN news?  Who didn’t drink in College?  Now forever in the archives is the names of these kids……Let’s stick to real news BDN!

    1. Bangor Daily News news? Do you use an ATM machine too?

Not everyone that goes to college drinks but for some reason you think they all do but lets get back to the article.

One student, Matthew Methot, 22, of Portland, was arrested April 5 on a charge of violating conditions of release after police determined he had been consuming alcohol, the sheriff’s department indicated in a report summary.

Mr. Methot was in violation of the law but you seem to be ok with that because when someone breaks the law it is not “real news”

If these adults and they are adults didn’t want their names published in a news article they should have not consumed alcohol.

    2. Two of the three jocks were from out of state.. subsidized to the tune off $9,000,000 per annum ($9500  per student per year). It’s time to privatize this sports and spa facility which the connected insiders call an investment .. but in truth a bad business model and drain on the taxpayers of Maine.

      1. thing i noticed was one of em was from mattapiosett which is just down the road from massachusetts maratime academy…practically in this kids back yard . it would have been cheap for him to go there , why maine?

        1. Not sure why he went to Maine. MMA has great reputation across the many industries it serves. Also, Maine and Mass have reciprocal agreements for state college tuitions. I am not sure how that works. My roomate for 4 years was from Mass. He credits me to this day for helping him get through it.

          1. The reciprocal agreement allows certain states to pay tuition that is 1/2 way between in state and out of state tuition.  Virginia has one with Mass Maritime but not with Maine Maritime…because Virginia doesn’t have a maritime school.

        2. Better program!  We looked at Mass Maritime and Maine Maritime and hands down it was a better, more respected program.  And we could have gotten a tuition break if my son had gone to Mass Maritime.

      2. Actually, if you saw my tax return you would say it was a pretty good return on investment. I can’t even count the number of MMA grads who earn their money outside the state and pay taxes here. I don’t know of any other school that offers that kind of return. Besides, you could make your argument for any college in Maine that has out of state students. Keep in mind plenty of Maine students attend out of state schools which are subsidized.

        1. He is always grousing when it’s about MMA but never when it’s about another Maine school that is subsidizing out of state students.  Good luck having any type of conversation!  He posted the same exact reference last week when MMA anounced where they were taking the ship this summer!

      3. They weren’t jocks!  You have such a grudge against MMA!  You need to get over it!  The UMO Jocks are the ones that are always in the news!  And you subsidize a larger portion of the students there then you do at MMA!!!  What did you do flunk out?

      4. Really? Again? I would really like to know where you get the idea that this place is a spa and sports facility.  Please do us all a favor, and leave your ignorant comments out of discussion!!!!! You are making false statements trying to make MMA look like a joke! If you don’t like paying taxes, please, feel free to move OUT of the state !!! Everyone I know supports what a great school I attend.  I don’t see what your problem is with MMA, but really, just give it up or move away.

  2. Maine’s legal drinking age history :

    Lowered to 20 in 1969
    Lowered to 18 in 1972
Raised to 20 in 1977 Raised to 21 in 1985 (Due to the 1984 National Minimum Drinking Age Act)

    1. But strangely enough, they have been able to go die for their county in all of the above ages :)

      1. This is my biggest issue with it.  They (legislators) say you aren’t mature enough to consume alcohol before 21, but they are mature enough to fight for their country after 18.  Had a cop let a buddy of mine off the hook at 20 because my buddy was a combat veteran.  Good cop, had some common sense.

  3. I agree, real news please. The “Hancock County Alcohol Enforcement Team” need to get real jobs. Leave the kids alone. They’re in college and they’re just having fun.

    1. Couldn’t agree more. I bet the last time little Johnny had fun, walking into the wrong house  was just a load of laughs for the home owner who could have most likely showed him his friends Smith & Wesson.

  4. … after an incident that occurred on Dec. 9 of last year. In that
incident, Methot was arrested on a charge of criminal trespassing after
he got drunk and entered the wrong house in Castine, thinking it was
his, police indicated. And you want him operating a mulitmillion dollar ship with cargo in your bay?

    1. How do you know he was in the license program? Doesn’t sound it since it will almost be impossible for him to get a license now anyway.

      1. Oh he’ll be able to get his license after he completes a 6 month drug & alcohol program that the USCG will require.  But he will have a hard time finding work…potentially won’t pass the security screening to work on a US flagged ship that is under contract with the military…or work for MSC…and he’ll never be able to become a Harbor Pilot.

  5. MMA and local police  may be sensitive to the drinking issue for a good reason. On October 24,2010 Richard Dykas, a 24 year old assistant football coach at the school  died in a car accident on Route 166 in Penobscot. His blood level was more than double the legal limit that night. While I agree that “kids will be kids” all of us want them to survive their college years.

    1. Your right. There’s been plenty of accidents on that road over the years coming to/from MMA.

  6. Isn’t it ironic that you seldom see where COA students are caught underage drinking and yet the other college in Hancock County is always in the paper?   One would have to wonder if  it’s alcohol that might be prohibited “across the bridge” or …..  Enough with the smearing of MMA students please…

  7. Terrible choice to post this article.  Doesn’t sound like anyone was drinking and driving.  There is no one in Hancock county the cops could have been chasing down for distributing Oxycontin or Heroin, or running a Meth lab?   Or has that problem been eliminated in that part of Maine?

What a waste of taxpayer money.  You could have started the article with:

Three (Insert Name of College or High School here) students are facing alcohol-related charges
after police conducted an underage drinking detail at the school this
    past week.

  8. The Hancock County Sherriffs have got to find something more worth while to do.  By invading private residences to seek out an underage drinker or two, they are forcing the students to drive away from the school to party.  ALL college students party on weekends from time to time.   Its almost as if the cops WANT the kids to drive the Castine Road in an intoxicated state.  LEAVE THEM ALONE and go fight some real crime.

    1. Funny the same people who condone underage drinking have no problem with the Brownville mother getting 5 years for the same thing. I think these kids are smart enough to get into a top college something that woman probably did not have they should deal with the punishment. I am not saying give them 5 years but I would bet they have better mental ability to know right from wrong than she did. Some people are get away with so much more depending on who they not what they did. I would bet most the time no charges are ever bought seeing how much college kids do drink and the few times they are charged.

      1. Any of the students that are going for their unlimited license and are busted on an alcohol violation are taking a huge chance of ruining their careers.  The USCG will require a 6 month alcohol & drug program, they will be unable to get onto a military base if it also includes driving under the influence and can stay on their record long enough to affect promotions.  I think more needs to be done to explain this to the students at MMA.  I have made my son VERY aware of just what underage drinking can do to ruin the rest of his life/career.

    2. If you were boarding a cruise ship 20 years from now and  found out the Captain was one of these guys, would you sleep with one eye open?

  9. Wow, students are really leaving private residences so they can drink and drive, all in the name of not getting summonsed? Just another example of poor judgment by someone who thinks they are mature enough to drink.

  10. No respect. Kids are given A chance for a great education and think its funny to drink. Some of it is funded on tax payers dime. Kick them  out and let them see how funny it is that people have to work for a living  fund those colleges. Give someone else a chance to better themselves.

    1. As someone that pays for ALL of my son’s education at MMA (and out of state tuition isn’t cheap!), I can tell you that my son hasn’t been “given” anything.  But then my son has busted his butt, has no violations and no regimental demerits.  Kids do get kicked out…for grades, violations of the alcohol policy and for the number of demerits they earn in the regiment…not to mention for poor grades.   Trust me when I say that MMA isn’t the only institution that is battling the alcohol issue…did you see last weeks paper?  Sigma Nu at UMO with the 17 & 18 year old high school girls?

      1. I was not picking on MMA yes you pay for all your sons tuition. But just imagine how much more it would cost if colleges did not get state or federal money . Just saying  Brownville mother got 5 years do not forget that. These kids know better.

        1. I apologize if I sounded very defensive.  Coolfusion has been hammering MMA for the last 2 weeks about how much of his tax dollars go to MMA.  What he hasn’t been doing is attacking any other school!  While my state taxes don’t go to MMA, I do pay federal taxes which do go to MMA.  My state taxes go to fund the state of Virginia schools and thus all the out of state students that attend.  I agree that the students know better and also that they know what the consequences will be.  The school has a very strict alcohol policy.

    1.  Well, according to some regimental heroes, the students should all sit around and masturbate to pictures of the regiment. College students will party wherever you go… therefore there will be underage drinking etc… and then every now and then they will be busted for it by the cops. MMA students in license programs are in the same boat as doctors, vets, dentists, pharmacists, etc… All of which graduate with a license for their practice. I would rather have the sailor have a few minor charges on their belt for underage drinking in college (something all college kids do) than the brain surgeon removing a tumor from somebody’s head…
