RICHMOND, Maine — A Richmond police officer charged the driver of an ice cream truck who allegedly had pot aboard after a traffic stop Saturday morning on Main Street.

Police Chief Scott MacMaster said Officer Josh Staples stopped the ice cream truck at 10:58 a.m. after a report that a suspicious ice cream truck was traveling in a neighborhood that has no children. Staples found the ice cream truck, which was about to turn into Richmond High School, and signaled for the driver to pull over on Main Street.

“The officer reported the smell of marijuana and conducted a search of the vehicle based on the probable cause of the smell of the marijuana,” MacMaster said.

The ice cream truck driver, 24-year-old Travis Wilson of South Gardiner, received a summons for possession of a usable amount of marijuana — which is up to 1.25 ounces, according to state law, MacMaster said.

He said the ice cream truck does belong to a legitimate ice cream company.

  1. He probably needed something to take the edge off after hearing “The Entertainer” for the 46,765th time.

  2. The sugar in the ice cream is a more harmful and addictive drug than the herb.

    End the prohibition!

  3. There is a statement that is very misleading here,….”received a summons for possession of a usable amount of marijuana — which is up to 1.25 ounces”. This might also mean he had 1 seed and 1 stem.  Another may be that there is “no children on that street”? Debunks over-population.
But,  no matter your job,  do it straight and with pride.  Seperate church from state.

  4. I dont see the articable suspicion here needed for a traffic stop. Was the vehicle registered properly? Any traffic violations observed? If not, anything found after the unlawful stop should be suppressed.

      1. No kids in that neighborhood? None?  Around a school?  Was there kids,or none?  Was there an oz and a quarter,  or a roach?  Was he selling weed to kids,  or not?  Did he have an oz.?  Bill thinks so.  He was targeting new clients.  For sure.

    2. It was a Terry Stop. He drove into the parking lot of a school during off hours and someone called that he was suspicious. All legal.

      1.  How do we know he was pulling into the high school, just because he was driving by? And someone called the cops on him before he reached the high school, because he was driving slow in a neighborhood to try and sell ice cream? He was pulled over because someone was suspicious of a slow driving ice cream truck!? Way to go citizen of Richmond, it’s an ice cream truck for goodness’ sake.
