BANGOR, Maine — Extremely dry conditions across Maine triggered several dozen fires across Maine over the weekend.
Two of the more troublesome blazes were still burning Sunday afternoon on Lasalle Island off Rockport and in the Unorganized Territory near Medway.
Maine Forest Service Ranger Jeffrey Currier said Sunday that fires were reported all over the southern half of the state, including in Manchester, Winslow, Whitefield, Fairfield as well as some in the Penobscot County area.
“Most of these fires are getting knocked down relatively quickly by the Forest Service and local fire crews,” said Currier. “It’s just been a very busy day. We have rangers going from fire to fire.”
On Lasalle Island, the fire was reported Saturday and burned 3 acres of mature softwood and threatened several structures. Ranger Sgt. Matt Gomes said the rough terrain strewn with combustibles was making the fire challenging to extinguish.
“The fire is problematic because of fuel loading,” he said in a press release distributed Sunday afternoon. “There are a large number of blowdowns in the fire area, creating a significant amount of fuel for the fire to consume. Wildfires like this are extremely labor-intensive.”
A Maine Forest Service helicopter was at the scene Sunday taking firefighters and equipment from the mainland and dropping water onto the fire. An inmate fire crew from Maine State Prison in Warren, which is part of a forest service training program, was helping. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Currier said late Sunday afternoon that the island fire was under control, but still not fully extinguished.
Maine Forest Service Rangers were also at the scene of a wildfire near Medway that, as of Sunday, had burned 32 acres of grass, brush and timber. Fanned by gusty winds and uninterrupted by low humidity, the fire spread quickly Saturday in an area near Interstate 95 in Medway and Township 1 Range 6. Rangers have determined that the fire was started by some human element, according to Currier.
“We definitely find it suspicious,” he said. “It might be related to some collateral illegal activity with an individual that might have been involved in the theft of some scrap metal.”
The fire danger in the state was rated at “very high” Sunday with no respite expected Monday with the weather forecast calling for more warmer than normal conditions.
A fire danger rating of “very high” is one step from the worst rating of “extreme,” which Currier said usually doesn’t happen except for in the late summer. He said the early spring is usually a busy time for fighting brush fires because dry timber and dead grass left over from winter.
“Over the last couple of years we’ve had some pretty low numbers as far as fire season goes because we’ve been fairly wet,” he said. “It seems like a lot of fires right now but it’s actually more typical than it has been in the past few years. The fickleness of Mother Nature is something you just can’t predict.”
Currier urged anyone planning to light any kind of fire to consult the local fire department and to follow the instructions on any fire permits as closely as possible.
“Failing to do that can be very costly, it can be embarrassing in and some cases, it can be tragic,” he said. “It’s springtime in Maine and Maine is the most forested state in the nation.”

Just exactly what is ” some sort of human element ” ? Did someone actually set the fire ? Was it a careless smoker ? Did a camp fire get out of cotrol ? Was someone welding in the woods ? We should not accept this from tax funded rangers………….
That’s right they should just let it burn…
“It might have been related to a theft of scrap metal”,according to the article. Your tax funded rangers can’t jeopardize a criminal investigation by giving too much information. It’s how they catch people. When someone talks about information that hasn’t gone public yet, it incriminates them. Give them a little credit. They were working today, a Sunday.
I thought it customary for the Sheriff Department to tell people they are under investigation
Sounds like cutting metal with a torch.
“Some sort of human element” is Ranger/Cop speak for we know what happened but do not want to give it away just yet. The “tax funded rangers” are probably more interested in solving the case than giving you the whole scoop. Can’t say I blame them.
I hope roxans land don’t burn can’t put it out no truck allowed
I’m so tired of the Roxanne bashing. Give it a rest. It’s old; dated; lame. Go on with your life. Find something to do. Read a book. Volunteer. Find a nice trout stream. Take up a hobby that doesn’t involve obsessing over one person.
There is nothing wrong with bashing naked imperialists/totalitarians for what they are. Woods and campgrounds I (and a lot of other people) used to have free access too are no longer accessible to us. Quimby is part of the problem, Kennebecredpine, not part of the answer.
So you’re calling her names because she’s a land owner and is doing what she wants on the property that she owns and pays taxes on? I’m guessing that since you believe you should be able to continue to use the land even though it’s not yours it would be ok for someone to walk into your house because they lived there once upon a time? It’s her land, she can do what she wants. If you don’t like it, buy some property yourself and do what you want with it.
Please spare me your sophistry. If her intentions are so benevolent,WHY IS SHE WALLING OFF HER PROPERTY? Even the EVIL and DESPISED lumber industry(according to you) has never sunk to such a level. Following your line of reasoning, I guess it is OK for a very few people to have absolute say over what happens on vast acreages and if the locals get screwed along the way then oh well, that’s just part of the price to be paid for the pursuit of the chimera known as the Socialist Utopia. An intelligent answer is awaited.
I’m not here to defend Roxanne. I’m just tired of every issue that talks about the North Woods revolving around a pretend bogeyman. It’s getting very old.
But to answer some of your statement. The land isn’t being walled off. There’s no fence or armed security. Her management company blocked some roads. From what I’ve seen on the property over the years, it needed to be done. Most of those roads were in rough shape and were just a cost liability. That would have been true for any new owner. From a pure business standpoint, those roads were only there to access timber. If you been up there you know there’s no timber left; that ship sailed long before Roxanne was in the picture. It’ll be at least 35 years until there’s any commercial forestry potential. So no need to pay for road maintenance. Probably doesn’t help that many of those who want to use the roads went after her in the paper before ever meeting her and never asked politely to keep them open.
The industry does in fact “wall off” most of the North Woods. It’s called the North Maine Woods gates. Pay to access. Those funds are then used to pay for road maintenance and camp ground clean-up. By the way they can deny access to anyone they want as well. I would say that’s “a very few people having absolute say over what happens on vast acreages”. That’s kind of a silly arguement considering that not long ago there were about 6 companies that controlled almost all of the North Woods.
At the end of the day my point is simple; move on. The more folks obsess about Roxanne the more power you give her. If you want to protect your access and the future potential of timber harvesting help buy some easements. Otherwise the next landowner on most of the North Woods may actually decided to “wall off” a property. Go to Montana and try to hunt or fish on private land without being a member of a $10,000 a year private club.
Great post, thanks!
Dont’ have to worry, on her land you can’t hunt no matter what club you belong too. Fishing certain areas, she can not stop. Though I disagree with North Maine Woods gates, you can hunt behind them. If the state stocks any lake or pond with fish, their should be no charge to get to any of those lands. I won’t mention her tree growth tax, becuase extreme eco friendlies think she should get away with it. Don’t worry, she is still there taking her time. If you let the discusssion fade away, she will come back again like she has this time. Only with more support, we never said she was stupid.
I find it interesting in your remarks that you jump to a conclusion about me simply because I support Quimby’s rights as a property owner. No where did I say the lumber industry is evil and despised. In fact, seeing as how I’ve worked in the woods the opposite is quite true. I believe that sustainable harvesting is the way to go over clear-cutting but that’s neither here nor there in this conversation.
In reality, I don’t care what her intentions are regarding usage of her land. If she wants to post the whole things it’s hers, not yours and not mine. This ‘socialist utopia’ that you’re talking about, you’re the one complaining because what she’s doing isn’t for the benefit of everyone. That’s a much more socialist ideal than buying property and using at as you desire. She had the money and if I ever had that kind of money I’d most likely do something similar. Perhaps my reasoning would be different but I hate to tell you, I don’t care if people like what I do all the time either. I’m not living my life to make everyone happy, I’m living life to make myself and my family happy. That’s not socialism, that’s individualism.
Like, you are right, it is her land and she can do with it what she wants (within state and federal rules). I can only assume that you also believe that Plum Creek should be able to do what they want with their land as well.
I don’t think that the forest service would be concerned with any walls or gates. Plus, with their helos, they could just “air assault” in. Could be fun!

Unusually dry for this time of year and any outdoor burning demands the highest consideration before striking the match….
SMIB land is dry too……….We need some rain……
