KITTERY, Maine — Police in Kittery say a young girl has been placed in the care of the state’s child welfare agency after being discovered with a sex offender from Ohio.

Police Chief Paul Callaghan said an officer noticed the man and the girl walking in the woods Thursday night near the Rex Motel and recognized the man from a notification from Ohio authorities. Callaghan said the man, the girl and the girl’s mother all were interviewed by police.

Callaghan told the Portsmouth Herald that authorities will investigate whether the girl’s mother gave permission for the girl to be alone with the man. He said the man, who was not identified, had not registered as a sex offender in Maine but still had time to do so without being penalized.

  1. Callaghan told the Portsmouth Herald that authorities will investigate whether the girl’s mother gave permission for the girl to be alone with the man…. Does it really matter if the mom gave permission?

    1.  I’d say it would matter a great deal if the mother knew he was a sex offender and nevertheless gave permission for him to be alone with her young daughter.

    2. Sure would!  As I said in my original comment, the mother could be aiding and abetting the man, no matter if he was a known sex offender or not at the time, and who knows if “mom” was trying to prostitute the child or have knowledge the guy would fondle her?  Lots we don’t know right now, but I’ll say this; we would never allow one of our daughters to walk alone in the woods or go anyplace with some man we did not know who he was or knew his or his family history, let-alone a mature relative with a girl who is anywhere underage (or as the BDN reported “a young girl”.).

    3. I would hope the mother didn’t know nor gave permission for her young daughter to take a walk in the woods with a guy living at the motel.

  2. Is he 25 and she 17?  Or,  is he 50 and she 6?  Seems age would be an important detail.  Heck,  a 25 year old is a young girl to me.

    1. Age of him shouldnt even be thought of here, convicted sex offender from another state, here, hasn’t registered here yet and walking into the woods with a young girl.If the mom was aware and gave permission for him to be around this kid she should be charged to.His age wouldn’t be a concern because he should have been warned aginst being alone with a minor, glad the officer was paying attention.

    2. As would the reason for him being a convicted sex offender, did he rape and murder a child or was he a 18 yo boyfriend of the 17 yo daughter of a public official?

      1. Your point is well taken.  I recall the case in GA of an 18 year old who was charged and convicted of rape.  The girl was 16 and they were dating.  He was black, she was white.

  3. Apparently, the news reported the kid to be a “young girl”, so if this was the information given to the  Associated Press, this would mean to me the girl is “underage”.  This, coupled with the mother who allegedly was in-company with the man and her daughter (but not with them walking in the woods) could be chargeable as accomplice and whatever else tossed at her legally like promotion of sex.  Whether or not she had knowledge the guy was a registered sex offender in another state, makes no difference here.  The registry is national in nature.  Once again, more and more gutter-scum enters Maine, and for what reasons?

  4. No details of what the mother knew. Most people who molest kids are never caught. A lot of things we do not know about this case. What was he charged with in the first place. Was he an 18 year old high school kid with a 15 year old ? We do not have any details.

      1. He is a registered sex offender.  So he hasn’t registered here yet.  This is a national registry.  Any LEO in the country can question them at any time.  Especially if they are running into the woods with a young girl. In this case,  i’m real glad this officer stepped in. I believe the BDN did a fine job of warning the public of another predator.

      2. The officer is doing his job! The man is a sex offender and was seen with a small child. Most sex offenders are not supposed to be near children under a certain age.

        1.  Thats right, ones on parole or probation. How about this guy, is he on probation or parole?

      3. Umm, there is a violation- a sex offender with a child. Harassement? Maybe in your mind, but not in a normal perspective!! The officer was doing nothing but his job.

    1. In defense of the BDN, there was not much more info in the original reporting.
This article raises more questions than it answers. Were the two adults together in the motel, or were they just both at the motel? The officer must have an amazing memory and fantastic eye sight. the officer should be commended.

  5. No age given on the girl, just says young, guess it does not matter, but the mother has issues I think, the mother should have taken the girl and run as fast and as far from this guy as they could. A very short story here BDN, you could have gave a little more info. But we are getting use to the no fluff paper!
