BANGOR, Maine — A local man was arrested Monday evening after police found him to be in possession of a knife.
Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said Toby Thurston, 52, was found in possession of a black folding knife which authorities deemed to be illegal.
The sergeant said a neighbor had called police when they thought they saw Thurston enter a home on Elm Street, but the suspect never did.
“At no point was he inside the residence,” said Edwards.
When police arrived to investigate, they found Thurston outside and discovered the knife in his possession. He was arrested for trafficking in dangerous knives and carrying a concealed weapon, both Class D charges.
Thurston was booked into the Penobscot County Jail, where he remained Tuesday morning, according to Edwards.

What gave them the right to search? Between the cop yesterday that could smell marijuana in the passengers pocket, and this one with the ability to see through pockets, we have quite an impressive police force.
When you live in a police state on the verge of martial law, questions such as yours will soon be met with indefinite detention without charge or trial.
Obviously there was a reason to search or the case would be thrown out and the Officer would be in danger of a lawsuit. The BDN gets these articles second hand and then selects the facts they post. Unless you have first hand knowledge then you have no ability to judge.
Trafficking in dangerous knives?? Better get rid of my Swiss Army Knife, seeing that I am neither Swiss nor in the Army.
What happens during hunting season, when hunters wear at least a 6″ blade or longer to gut-out deer?
is a pocket knife a concealed weapon ?
According to Maine state law, YES! Get your concealed firearms permit and you’ll be o.k. according to the Maine State Police.
But, a knife is not considered a “firearm”; or is it? In Maine, anything can happen, it does not surprise me.
If a stranger was milling around outside the front of my home and then was found in possession of an illegal knife and was arrested, I say Thanks. Thanks to the caring neighbor who called, Thanks to the police on the scene.
