MORRILL, Maine — Although a Liberty man made every effort to leave the scene of an accident Friday morning and demanded that onlookers not call for help, he did end up getting arrested and was charged with operating under the influence.

Joshua Jewett, 35, apparently rolled his car at about 7:30 a.m. on Higgins Hill in Morrill, according to a preliminary police report from the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office. A woman in the area who saw him clambering out of his crashed car and limping away from the scene did call police, despite Jewett’s best efforts.

“He yelled at bystanders not to call 911,” Chief Deputy Jeff Trafton said Tuesday. “He tried to leave the scene multiple times but no one would pick him up.”

Jewett’s blood alcohol content tested at 0.21 percent, which is more than twice the legal limit to drive of 0.08 percent.

He also was charged with driving to endanger and was taken to Waldo County Jail in Belfast to be booked, according to Trafton.
