LEWISTON, Maine — A firefighter with the Lewiston Fire Department was arrested Thursday after Maine Drug Enforcement agents said they observed him buying crack cocaine.

Peter Morrell, 47, of 21 Cleaves St., Auburn, was arrested at 3:27 p.m. in a parking lot at Sabattus Street and East Avenue and charged with possession of crack.

He was taken to the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn where he made bail about 5 p.m.

For several years over the past decade, Morrell was one of the department’s fire inspectors. He was dismissed from that position two years ago but later rehired as a firefighter.

Fire Chief Paul LeClair said Thursday that he was aware that Morrell had been arrested but he had no further comment on the matter.

  1. first perdomo, now this guy? whats up with these  “heros”? my image is tarnished.  for shame.

  2. Every profession, trade, job, society has rotten apples……please do not judge the 99% by the 1% .

  3. Slap him on the wrist, let him say “my bad”…and all will be ok……then he can go back to work…..right, they the courts need to make an exception of this man……probably not his first time buying crack…he just got caught this time…..another loser off the streets, well at least for a bit while in the “system”…..

  4. Another example of “a policeman did this” or “a teacher did that”….BDN, please make sure you include in the headline the occupation of every single person on which you write a story. Otherwise, get over it.

    1. You seem upset about this story, but something tells me you aren’t terribly bothered by the much more widespread BDN’s publication of “transients” misdemeanors, etc.

  5. Good job MDEA. We might not win the war on drugs but you guys sure are winning a lot of battles.

    To the Governor:

Mr. LePage, you have a department with the MDEA that is keeping many of us safe that is heavily underfunded and overworked. They need more resources. Many of us, before the next budget session, will be leaning on our local lawmakers to allocate more funds to this department as the MDEA continues to battle the drug epedemic. It isn’t going to get better all by itself. Please be so courteous to listen carefully to Roy McKinney and Darrel Crandle about their needs and wants. They are the men that have the knoledge and insight to give you what you really need to know. The sign should read “open for non drug related business” when you enter Maine.

      1.  If you do not have personal knowledge then you should not be throwing out false claims. Are you trying to defend firefighters as a group by your accusations?

  6. He should be done with the fire department, that’s all we need is a firefighter who is on drugs helping fight a fire and then someone gets killed of him being high!  he is not setting any example. time for him to stop fighting fires.

  7. We are trusted to come in to homes in an emergency and I believe that it is more relevant for our names and work to be identified than non public senator employees. There seems to be more and more fire personnel involved in shameful behavior and we will soon impact the trust level that the public has in us. This type of behavior is getting out of control from one end of the state to the other with arson and fire chief’s dismissal in Aroostook to drugs in Bangor and Lewiston.

    1. And FF’s are dieing in the Line of Duty because of it too. Three or four years ago two Boston Jakes were killed at a restaurant fire. One tested positive for cocaine and the other was legally drunk. The argument can be made that they were impaired and should never have been allowed inside the building. But, the Boston FF Union has fought and fought to keep mandatory drug and alcohol testing out of the fire house. If this “gentleman” is a crack head, eventually he would have killed himself or someone else on the fire ground.
