MILO, Maine — Karen Meservey is on a hot streak.
Last Thursday night, the 53-year-old Milo woman bagged $2,000 in bingo winnings at the Eagles Club in Brewer.
The next night, she won $500,000 after buying a $20 instant game ticket at LJ’s Express, a gasoline station and convenience store on Elm Street in Milo. She waited until she got home to scratch off the ticket, a Mega Multiplier, which she said is a luxury she usually can’t afford.
“I was sitting there having coffee with my brother and it was just like someone pushed the air right out of me,” Meservey said Tuesday in a telephone interview. “I said his name three times. That’s all I could get out,” she said, joking that her brother Edward, who lives nearby, probably thought she was having a heart attack.
After a sleepless weekend, Meservey said she returned to the store on Monday to confirm that she actually held a winning ticket. Store employees said that she did.
“She brought it in to us because she wasn’t sure,” Tracey Gray, store manager at LJ’s Express, said Tuesday.
“I offered her $20 for [the winning ticket],” Gray quipped, adding that the store does a brisk business in lottery tickets, both scratch tickets and draw tickets for games such as Powerball and Megabucks.
“At first we were going to keep it quiet,” Meservey said of her good fortune. The excitement, however, proved too much to bear alone, so she told a few family members, including her former husband.
“He couldn’t believe it,” she said. “He’s still in shock.”
She also told her grown children, who live in Milo, Dover-Foxcroft and Bangor, she said.
Mike Boardman, marketing manager for the Maine State Lottery, said instant game wins such as Meservey’s are not that unusual.
During the past year, he said, the lottery has seen 55 people win $100,000 or more. He provided the following breakdown: three $1 million instant winners, four $500,000 instant winners, two $300,000 instant winners, 10 $250,000 instant winners and 36 $100,000 instant winners.
That total, however, does not yet reflect Meservey’s win.
Boardman said Tuesday that $500,000 winners receive checks in the amount of $350,000, or what is left after the withholding tax is taken out. LJ’s Express will receive a $5,000 bonus for selling Merservery the winning ticket, he said.
“We have big winners like this on a regular basis but it never gets old seeing the excitement of the winners and presenting them with an oversized check,” he said Tuesday.
In answer to the top question on everyone’s minds — what she plans to do with her winnings — Meservey said simply, “I want to buy a house. That and probably an early Christmas for the grandchildren,” she said.
Meservey said she has never owned a home. She hasn’t been able to afford one, she said, adding that she is disabled and on MaineCare.
Meservey said she has had the same landlord for more than 25 years.
There is another thing she wants to do: “I’ve always wanted to see SeaWorld,” she said. “I know it’s not exotic or anything, but I’d rather see SeaWorld than Disney.”

Congratulations !!!!
Stories like this keep lower income individuals playing the lottery and it does them a huge disservice.
It’s called predatory gambling – and it’s state sponsored…
I applaud the lady for her good fortune BUT ON MAINE CARE, buying lottery tickets, playing bingo????? What is wrong with this picture? Will her State benefits continue? With $5000,000 maybe she can buy a house, go to Sea World & pay for health insurance.
i know you can play bingo for 15 bucks spend 15 bucks an win 2,000 not bad
So were the winnings claimed on the 1040? Just curious.
Yes the money on bingo she would half to claim because she won over 1200 bucks
Not sure where the $1,200 figure comes from other than maybe a parameter for reporting to the state, BUT ALL winnings of such ventures are taxable!!!
If you itemize, you would be able to deduct any losses (with receipts) up to the amount of the winnings.
Yes the bingo game in old town are kept at 1200 so you do not half to pay taxes . Yes you are right there too
wollydevil – The games are kept at $1,200 so that they don’t have to report and withhold taxes :) Any winnings are considered gambling income and taxable under both federal & state tax statutes. The trick is that if they don’t report …. then the chance of you getting caught is even less :)
Conversely, non-winning ticket payments go to the state gov. which pays for these services. So in a way, its paying for her services… kinda…
Bravo! If the state didn’t want people on MainCare and disability to buy lottery tickets, they would have written a law making them ineligible to spend their money as they see fit.
MainCare and disability isn’t meant for lottery tickets etc, etc.! It’s meant to for their needs.
@@@@@
That ain’t gonna last long she gets $350,000 out of the $500,000 or less if you pay taxes
I say she should have to pay back the state for all the costs incurred for her disability on MaineCare. I pay $2.74/week for these people to get healthcare. all i want is … from December 2011 til present check paid back…and i will go away
How helpful, and compassionate that you have worked out, to the penny, what it costs you to do what society requires of you.
but shou;d it?
damn straight it should.
When you receive Main Care,in the finer print,in the “contract/agreement “you sign with them, you have to pay back any funds received if your financial situation allows .I.E. an inheritance,a lottery winning and usually the sale of a home.
At least she came by all this honestly and don’t steal from other people. Get the drift????
Maybe this can be a wake-up call for Mr. LePage in realizing just how difficult it is to understand and get a handle on poverty, motivation, coping skills, etc. And that taking people off ‘welfare’ isn’t going to make them become resourceful and find work. They’ll still play lottery tickets and spend the way they ‘choose’…and worse, drain the system even more through ill health and other issues.
Can’t buy health insurance in Maine. It’s either an Employer or MaineCare or Medicare. I feel bad for her, I’m glad she won, but she will lose all the little that she has. She has no idea of how much that $500,00 really is…She can either buy a house or invest it or just take a Vacation to Sea World. She won’t be able to do all of it…and in the long run, she will need to think of her future. No 10 million dollars, just $500,000. I wish her well and hope that she makes the decision for her now time, and for her future.
Although I agree with your premise No one forced her to buy it
Congratulations to her. It’s tough for me to see people spending $20 on a single rip off ticket though. I think it’s a bit irresponsible of the State to be selling them, but that’s probably a topic for another forum.
Yep, take that up with the “ATF” Alcohol, tobacco, and firearms. Thats pretty much the whole state of maine. Plus add lottery in there. The state tries to make as much money as they can. Welcome to America. =) . . . .
Would you have felt better if a rich woman plunked down $20 dollars on a lottery ticket instead of paying a good tip to a waitress? And would it have made your really happy if the rich woman won half a million more dollars than she already has? And would you have been happier still if she used a tax loophole to avoid handing over part of her winnings to the IRS?
For 99% of the players, the lottery is a losing proposition because the odds of a favorable return is hugely stacked against the gambler/player. Karen, if you read this comment I suggest you quit buying tickets while you are ahead.
Her “former husband” couldn’t believe it and is still in shock. I’m sure he is…I’m sure he is.
Congrats Karen. You are soon to realize you have about 300 friends you forgot about. Advice #1, get someone to handle your money for you and do not allow yourself access to large sumsof it.
Good win, hold on to it. 350k goes faster than you might think.
If i was her i would put some money into bonds like 100,000
Agreed.
Talk to a decent planner hurry.Without a good education and the know how to handle money just buying bonds can be stupid. You might say like 100k into a lifetime annuity . Buy a house for $80k and invest the rest with the help of a decent planer. She will not be buying new car if she was smart. Enough to just get buy decent.
How can buying bonds be stupid the only way you lose on bonds if they go bankrupt
A decent financial planer could get her about $2,000 a month for the rest of her life. Now that being said I have seen people with that much be broke in a year.
i had a substantial amount of money…its gone now
ex-wife?
greed and a certain casino
no ex-wife for him!!! Most of what money he said he had (which I doubt) went to the Dover Court House….
Awesome glad someone won that can use it! But remember if your on ssi and not social security you will lose that ssi (supplement security income) as well you will lose your maincare until the money is gone and you show what it was spent on. I worked for the system its a win for you but remember ur caseworker reads the paper too ..report to dhhs u won
There are a few stories about people who have won a significant amount of money on gambling, yet kept their food stamps, free health insurance, ssi, etc.
Her money is going to go fast if she doesn’t have a job or a way to continue to supplement her income as she is now going to be paying for her own groceries and health care- or I would assume so anyway.
%%%%%
I wonder if LePage will go after her MaineCare.
Why shouldn’t he? She can afford her own now…
Not if she buys a house and blows it going to SeaWorld.
I understand but that’s not our fault, that’s over 10 years of income for most Mainer’s. She should not get any government assistance for 10 years IMO.
$350k…all you can go to is sea world? hell I’d buy a boat and go to the ocean.
Sounds nice, but why do reporters for these stories never seem to ask the most obvious questions: What were the odds of this person winning, how many losing tickets did the winners buy before winning, and do the winners intend to keep playing?
I figure that she’s now broken even after years of scratch ticket gambling.
She thinks she was having “a lucky streak”. Unfortunately, many lottery ticket buyers can’t understand the very poor odds of their winning anyway. Her odds of having any money in the near future are about as good as her winning again! I hope I’m wrong, but don’t expect to be….
Seriously … disabled and on MaineCare, yet can purchase scratch tickets at $20 a pop.
Right, but now she will lose it
Cary, I’m scratching my head on that one too. I’m in a comparable position, and I can’t possibly justify $20 lottery tickets.
I make a comfortable living and can’t justify $20 lottery tickets … different strokes and all that I guess.
Really? Not even if you had just won 2 grand playing bingo? Oh, my…….tough crowd!
Some people can’t afford to go to Bingo and Bingo can get pretty expensive. Nice if you have the money to do it in the first place though.
She said she can’t usually afford them, and it was a luxury she bought with her bingo winnings. Quit being jealous- were you right behind her in line when you bought your ticket, Sour Grapes?

Disability is not based on income you get, except if you worked for it. I don’t think a winning ticket will disqualify her. But if she somehow managed to earn minimum wage working a few hours a week, they’d deduct that from her disability money.
There is no Elks club in Brewer
It says the Eagles Club.
It did say Elks club last night
It did say Elks club last night
Come on people, can’t u all be happy for her without showing your own jealousy ?
I just read the posts. How mean people can be. Of course she wants a house. Doesn’t everyone deserve a home?? If she buys one in Milo she should be able to find a nice one for well under 100,000. My Mom’s house is up for sale and its well less then that. A trip.. I think that’s a wonderful idea. presents for the kids ..Great. The rest she should talk to someone who can give her good advice on how to make it last. As for her playing bingo.. I have no problem with that.. it’s entertainment. If she hadn’t spent $20 bucks on a ticket.. well guess she never would have won. For all we know . it may be the first time she ever did and maybe she felt lucky and used her bingo winnings to buy it. I’ve never spent more then $5 for a scratch ticket. I’ve also never won $2000 playing bingo.
They are not being mean, they are being realistic. Huge difference between the two.
They are being both mean and petty, as well as envious and jealous. The way life should be, apparently!
I’m sorry Kevin… What they are being is Jealous. Plan and simple. So she plays Bingo. Big deal!!! A friend or family member could of taken her to play bingo. So What! So she spent $20 out of a $2000 she just won! Again.. if she hadn’t just won $2000 then I could see the problem people are having. It was her money to spend as she wished. God forbid someone enjoys their life. If people were being “realistic” then they’d have ALL their facts before Jumping on someone’s good fortune.
mom
Hey Karen remember me we went to different high schools together……..
That was funny!
Congrats to this woman! Treat the grand kids well! I’m SO happy that you got so lucky! God has blessed you, hopefully your luck will rub off all us Mainers! :D

Um, correct me if I’m wrong, buy isn’t Dirigo Health YOUR insurance plan? If it is coming of your check, than that is your insurance.
nope i have a private insurance plan. because i opted to have insurance I have to pay for others…its a state law.
Jon, your check shows $2.74 for Dirigo Health Care, I pay $300.00 bi-weekly for my Dirigo Health plan I want to work where you do, I don’t mind HARD work, and would love to only pay $2.74 weekly for health insurance.
Yes but you have a Dirigo Health Care Plan, doesn’t sound like he does.
There is another thing she wants to do: “I’ve always wanted to see
SeaWorld,” she said. “I know it’s not exotic or anything, but I’d rather
see SeaWorld than Disney.”
time to report to welfare…
One time gambling winning do not constitute income She will continue to receive all of her benefits IF she places the winnings in a trust. With a trust the only income is the interest earned. The best type of trust is called a special needs trust and that trust will have to be administered by someone else for her benefit
Good way to keep sucking the State dry and also have money. I love the way this works.
Wait… She’ll continue to get her benefits even with over $300,000 (after taxes)?
I know truly disabled people who have worked hard all of their lives and really need to retire, yet are denied disability and/or any other state assistance.
How is this fair?
Sea World is much better than Disney!! Go ..have so much fun!!! What a bunch of cold people you all are. She doesnt have to live in a friggin box. I hope she gets a beautiful home and has a blast. All you negatives climb out of your box!!
After she gets this beautiful home I hope she can afford to maintain it & pay the taxes.
#####
Sea World is a lot more fun!!! You buy yourself a beautiful home. I cant believe the coldness of you people. She doesnt have to lie down in a hole just because she is disabled. Im shocked at how you all are. May you all never have to be in her shoes. And by her shoes I mean winning a lot of money. Congratulations Karen.
Sea World is a lot of fun!!! Buy yourself a beautiful home! I cant believe how cold and cynical you all are. She doesnt have to live in a hole just because she has disability. I am shocked at you people. Karen you have a blast! They are all jealous…..
It’s not the disability that the posters are upset about. That’s fine…it’s the MaineCare she’s getting, yet having enough money to spend on the lottery and bingo. Many fine people are using MaineCare….but using the savings it provides to gamble?? That’s the issue.
I agree and that’s the point. And, it’s not just her. If I didn’t see abusers every day I’d feel different about things too.
You don’t know where the money to play Bingo.. which is very costly and is entertainment .. came from. She just won 2000 playing bingo. I think she can buy whatever she wanted to with it.
She may have skipped a meal just to go out for a night of relaxation and fun at bingo for all you people know. Then it just kept rolling……Congratulations!!
AWESOME!!! You know sometimes people that are the less fortunate deserve a break too! I am so tired of reading comments on such great stories. We should be happy for her. We don’t know her or her lifestyle yet you want to complain because she has MaineCare…. I think buying a house that she has never owned, early Christmas for the Grandchildren and Sea World is a GREAT idea. YOu only live once, enjoy it while you can <3
She could use some of the $502k she just got to pay back the “System” for all costs incurred to start.
I agree
amen.
GOOD FOR YOU, KAREN: GOD BLESS YOU! Just be careful of “borrowers” and those who want to scam and promise you paybacks. Be safe. Enjoy SeaWorld and take care. Best of wishes and good luck!
Maybe she will use her winnings to pay back the State?
Why do all of YOU people keep asking if she’ll have to pay back into the system? Do you have family that need assistance and can’t get it because they are able bodied and can work?
Grow up and just be happy that you have your own health and can provide for yourself and your family. You want to be mad at someone, then get mad at the one’s in control of it all, and that includes all of us too!
I have a family member that is disabled and cannot get assistance because he made “too much money” last year. It doesn’t matter what he is making right now- it is what he made before that they are looking at.
$20 for a scratch ticket? And the government says there is no inflation?
I am getting so ugly reading these comments because we don’t know this lady and who are we to judge what she does with her money she must pay her bills or she won’t have had the same landlord for 25yrs rite who are we to say what she can and cannot bye with her disability check i bet she didn’t ask to be disabled and she might have just gotten it we don’t know but we shouldn’t jump to conclusions so fast know one is any different than any buddy else
I have to disagree with the disability part, I have enough health problems, legitimate ones to be disabled, but I can’t get it, had an 18 year old tell me I needed the right lawyer!!! I work and actually think that people on disability should be more resourceful with their cash, just as the ones on TANF. Also, disability, I don’t believe counts lottery winnings against their monthly income, not sure but…..what is wrong with THAT picture. And what is her disability, back pain?anxiety?PTSD? depression? I have all of the above, and still can’t get approved, oh and also I have just recently been diagnosed with a heart problem, guess what still don’t qualify, so yea I am a little bitter and disappointed that someone on a fixed income would spend 20 dollars on a crap shoot and still be eligible for benefits, ANY benefits
#####
Good Luck. I hope that you spend the money wisely.
On MaineCare and is wining $2,000!!! then spending $20 dollars on a scratch ticket. WOW I have a job and I can’t do that! Guess she can get off MaineCare now! Isn’t that taxpayers money? She is playing with our money and wining….so it is taxpayer dollars and winning, not hers.
she won 500,000
With a new house, gifts for her grandkids, a trip to Sea World, taxes, and anyone else who will probably have their hands out for a freebie…sounds like she will end up like almost all other lottery winners. Bankrupt and back on Mainecare within a year.
I think it is great that she won.I hope that she never has to rely on the Gov. for the rest of her life.I hope she gets a nice cozy home and lives happily from her on in.I will wager that she is also a caring soul and will help others with her good fortune….

Petty and jealous adults, thy name is…teapartiers.
=====
Leave the” Taxed Enough Already” (TEA) people out of it.
You have no idea what you’re talking about. Sad when you have to say something like this.
Sad is when you can’t see the forest for the trees.
GO BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
my husband keeps at me about buying tickets or the powerball….I have been looking for a job for 3 years and he has been on layoff for 2 months……we do not get aid, heating food stamps, etc…..he received mainecare for his kidney failure and lymphoma….just received a notice from state to drop him…….I can’t afford tickets ….how do these people do it?????I guess I am doing something wrong….
@@@@@
He’s being dropped due to the Governor removing non-cats. Thank LePage for that.
Sigh I never buy scratch tickets either you can buy a lot of beans, rice, veggie seeds and flour with $20 . Get a financial advisor karen and keep a low profile
Just think of all the scratch tickets you can buy with $350,000…
Congratulations Karen! I’m jealous- ( as obviously most of the negative posters here are ) – enjoy your winnings!
I’m disabled and can’t even afford a $1.00 ticket, She just got lucky, State of Maine will want some of that back I’m sure, Federal Government also(Taxes). Hope she has fun with the rest of it. And keep some to live on as they will cut back your benefits, if they don’t cut you off completely for a while. Not trying to be a rain cloud , it’s just the way it is.
So she can cancel Maine care now right?
Congrats, Ms Meservey! Enjoy!
They are the population that want to hit it big. The next question is, can DHHS manage to not scew up taking away her benefits? Or is she still entitled to the benefits. It’s difficult to know these days.
Some posters are ignoring the fact that she bought this $20 ticket after winning $2000 at bingo. I might do the same thing if I had $2000 in bingo winnings. I hope she is getting good financial advice because I’ve seen how the rules for lump sum income can affect people on disability. If she gives too much to her kids and grandkids she could wind up on the street and ineligible for help for several years.
///
Congratulations to her, however, she had better budget some money for health insurance because she is no longer eligible for MaineCare.
Why budget??? Just because you’re ineligible doesn’t mean that the state won’t pay for your healthcare…..
She will lose her mainecare and disability. I know someone that won 500 grand and lost both
Well I know a bunch of people that lost it, and the state still paid out almost 11 million dollars for their medical care….so losing it is a realtive term.

Its there to help people that NEED help not people that are able to get a job but to lazy to
Congratulations Karen,
A long time scoolmate from my hometown, so glad to hear she hit the jackpot!!! A very deserving win for a wonderful person.
Shame on you judemental people who know nothing of the individual nor the circumstances but cast opinions.
That’s awesome that someone who can really use the money won.
Good for her!! I hope she is wise with her windfall.
Went to school with this lady my whole life. Let me tell you dirt poor is putting it mildly. She came from a big family and was a good person. NO one deserves this more than she does… Congratulations and enjoy your winnings Karen.. So happy for you
&&&&&
The last time I looked, We are still a free country. I spent my income the way I want too. Don’t even think of tell me what to do with it….
I wish I could spend my income the way I want to, but the government takes it away from me before I get the chance.

OMG all u negative people out there everybody deserves a break.Life is too short and this Lady certainly can use a break .Enjoy Karen have fun but use your winnings wisely so happy for you.this is your money to do whatever your heart desires and at least U won’t be going to the the slammer for embezzling any of it.
+++++

Wow, so much resentment targeting Ms. Meservey! How about toward a state-run program that:
a) Encourages irresponsible spending
b) Targets the poor
c) Runs on irrational hope
d) Is designed to be addicting
e) Returns a negative percentage on investment
f) Taxes winnings, while restricting tax deductions on losses
Amazing that the people of Maine are so hostile toward the evils of *shudder* CASINOS when the state government has had a comfy monopoly on one of the worst forms of gambling for over 35 years. Don’t cry foul about poor people “evading” taxes on a bingo game. The lottery IS a tax on poor people!
Every one of us is or will be the recipient of some kind of government help. Heaven help all of us if we cant go spend a measly 15 dollars on a night of bingo then maybe get lucky enough to win more like she did. Shame on all of you. Its a sad day in this world when we cant just be happy for someone like her. This world is so cynical and heartless right now it makes me sad. I pray all you cynics do not ever end up on disability or Maine Care and if you do make sure you spend what little you have wisely lest you be judged as harshly as this fortunate woman.
Good for her!
Only the rich should play BINGO!!!!
So many jelous people! GOOD FOR YOU!!!! Congratulations!!! :O)
Just scanning the posts I see terms like “meanspirited” and “jealous” and “hateful” directed at those who might challenge the idea of a lottery. You are all missing the point. The point is that there are better ways to see to the needs of the underclass than silly games and cards. State lotteries and coercive state run redistributionist schemes are not part of them. People should be able to criticize the entitlement system without others a priori assuming the moral high ground. All of you who are screaming “mean” and “jealous” – how many of you have ever opted to pay the higher rate on your federal income tax return to show you are not “meanspirited”? I am sure the silence will be deafening! Don’t forget that there is a nice little box you can check on your 1090 form. Feel free. No doubt Maine has a similar little box on the state form. Go for it. Otherwise, please do not guilt trip the rest of us into feeling it is our duty to be coerced at gunpoint to fund these silly lotteries and EBT cards. That is quite mean. Private charity does a far better job with less waste at taking care of the underclass. And you won’t see effective charities promoting these stupid scratch tickets!
You told us all about yourself when you said “the needs of the underclass”. I’m glad most people don’t perceive themselves better that others as you obviously do. I hope you never have a time in your life when you need to askfor help.
I’m sure as a member of the “upperclass” you’ll tell them you don’t want “your” entitlement program, Social Security or Medicare, when the time comes. PLEASE this was not an advertisement for the lottery, purly a kuddos to the very deserving person that won.
#####
Well good for her.. but buying a house on 500K? hmm and then affording the taxes? Especially on her income.. well I hope she spends it wisely with wise decisions and all.. but good for her..
she lied when she said she never plays the lottery> I have known her for many years and she has spend a lot of money gambling in anyway she can. and it is also funny how she says she has never owned a home. she should pay back all the money she has taken for her so called illness…all she suffers from is being lazy. most likey she will blow the money at Hollywood casino and the corner drug dealer
