WATERVILLE, Maine — A woman who allegedly caused a six-car accident in downtown Waterville in March was not drunk at the time of the crash, according to police.
An SUV driven by Nancy Hazard, 42, of Waterville struck four cars waiting at an intersection on College Avenue in March. One of those cars was pushed into a sixth vehicle. In all, six people were hurt in the crash.
Deputy Chief Charles Rumsey, citing a toxicology report, said Wednesday that the woman had no alcohol in her system during the crash.
“The blood work is back, it’s clear for alcohol and illegal drugs,” Rumsey told the Bangor Daily News. “We’re not confirming or denying there were prescription drugs.”
Rumsey said that it’s unclear whether Hazard will face charges in connection with the accident since the results of the accident reconstruction report are still pending.
“I was told they have had to pause that process a number of times to deal with some recent fatal accidents around the state,” he said.
Witnesses stated that Hazard’s vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed at the time of the crash, according to Rumsey.
“It was amazing that nobody was killed,” Rumsey said. “Everybody that’s been involved in this process has said it’s a great possibility that accident could’ve ended up worse than it was.”
Hazard suffered chest trauma and a back injury in the crash and spent 10 days at Eastern Maine Medical Center, according to Rumsey. The driver of one of the other vehicles, Karl Andresen, 69, of Winslow spent two days at EMMC with a cracked cervical vertebra, eight broken ribs and a concussion. Both are expected to recover fully.
