BANGOR, Maine — A heavily traveled portion of Union Street will be closed to traffic most of the day Thursday for sewer repairs.

Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said in a statement that Union Street will be shut down between High and Third streets, in front of the Bangor YMCA, and heavy delays are expected.

Traffic approaching from Main Street or the Joshua Chamberlain Bridge will be diverted to High Street, onto Hammond Street and back to Union Street.

Inbound traffic heading toward downtown will be slowed but will be able to pass through the construction.

Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes if possible, Edwards said. The construction is expected to wrap up Thursday night.
