BANGOR, Maine — A drunken transient who was given multiple chances by police to cooperate was arrested for disorderly conduct after repeatedly yelling and swearing at officers, police say.
Mark Whitmore, 51, reportedly was leaning against a car near a Union Street church Wednesday afternoon when Officer Tim Shaw discovered him to be “extremely intoxicated,” according to Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards.
“The officer tried to check with dispatch and see if one of the shelters would take him,” said Edwards, but he refused to go to a shelter, and after Shaw advised him to “move along” Whitmore walked across the street and drank out of a 40-ounce can of beer.
Shaw advised Whitmore not to drink in public.
“The officer tried to give him a break,” Edwards said. “He was very drunk and disorderly and couldn’t even stand up.”
Whitmore was intoxicated to the point where officers advised him to go to Eastern Maine Medical Center to be checked out. While he was at the hospital he continued to yell and swear at hospital staff and police, Edwards said.
“He was just not going to cooperate with the staff at the hospital,” said Edwards.
After receiving multiple disorderly conduct warnings, Whitmore was arrested and taken to Penobscot County Jail, where he remained Thursday morning, according to a jail official.

Where can I get a 40 oz can?
Almost any place that sells liqour/alcohol.
Although I could be wrong, I have been before. :-) I’m pretty sure they don’t make a 40 oz can, just a 40 oz bottle.
I don’t think you’re wrong Todd, I know my way around a liquor store and I have never seen one…so you know how it goes…”if I ain’t seen it, then it ain’t real”
Actually they do make and sell them. I’ve seen them in Irvings and Maritime stores.
The big cans that they sell individually are 24 oz, not 40 oz.
Give him 2 aspirin and let him out in a couple days.
